Existe-t-il une conception spécifiquement
britannique de la citoyenneté ? Si, en
France, ce concept a suscité d’incessantes
analyses, il a longtemps été plus problématique
au Royaume-Uni, où on a pu lui préférer la notion de
« sujet ». Il s’agit d’analyser les notions de « citoyen » et
de « citoyenneté » dans leurs dimensions théorique et
historique, et de déterminer selon quelles modalités la
conception britannique de la citoyenneté s’est nourrie des
échanges et transferts philosophiques et politiques de part et
d’autre de la Manche. L’idée de citoyenneté sera aussi confrontée à
d’autres notions fondamentales, telles que celles de nationalité, de
multiculturalisme, ou de droits sociaux. Ce colloque mettra enfin en lumière
l’influence exercée sur la notion de citoyenneté par le contexte politique dans
lequel elle s’inscrit.
Is there such a thing as a British conception of citizenship? While the concept has caused
endless analyses and debates in France, it long proved much more problematic in the UK, where
the term ‘subject’ arguably took precedence. This conference will aim at analysing the ‘citizen’
and ‘citizenship’ concepts in their theoretical and historical dimensions and at gauging the
extent to which the British conception of citizenship has been influenced by crossChannel philosophical and political transfers. ‘Citizenship’ shall also be contrasted
with other fundamental notions, such as nationality, multiculturalism or social
rights.This conference will shed light on the way citizenship may be influenced
by the political context that surrounds it.
