THE SIMINOVITCH PRIZE
LE PRIX SIMINOVITCH
The Siminovitch Prize shines a spotlight on excellence and innovation in Canadian Theatre
with an annual prize worth $100,000.
Over a three-year cycle, the prize honours a professional director, playwright or designer who
is an acknowledged leader in the theatre and whose work is transformative and influential.
The prize also recognizes the importance of mentorship to support emerging talent. The
recipient receives $75,000 and in turn, chooses a protégé to receive $25,000. This year’s
Protégé Prize is generously supported by the RBC Emerging Artists Project.
The prize was launched in 2001 to honour the values and achievements of the distinguished
scientist Lou Siminovitch and his late wife Elinore Siminovitch who was a pioneering
playwright. The Siminovitch Prize is the largest prize in Canadian theatre.
Le Prix Siminovitch met pleins feux sur l’excellence et l’innovation en théâtre canadien avec
un prix annuel de 100,000$.
Sur un cycle de trois ans, le Prix honore un metteur en scène, un dramaturge ou un
scénographe professionnel qui fait figure de proue dans le domaine du théâtre et dont le
travail est reconnu pour sa portée et son influence. Le Prix reconnaît aussi l’importance du
mentorat pour soutenir les talents émergents. Le lauréat reçoit 75,000$ et choisit à son tour
un protégé qui reçoit 25,000$. Cette année, le Prix du Protégé est généreusement parrainé
par le Projet Artistes Émergents de RBC.
Le Prix a été créé en 2001 pour célébrer les valeurs et les accomplissements de l’éminent
scientifique Lou Siminovitch et sa regrettée épouse Elinore Siminovitch qui fut une
pionnière en dramaturgie. Le Prix Siminovitch est la plus importante récompense en théâtre
au Canada.

ELINORE & LOU SIMINOVITCH
Dr. Lou Siminovitch has played an instrumental
role in some of the past century’s most important
medical discoveries. He is a pioneer in the research
for the genetic causes of muscular dystrophy and
cystic fibrosis and has made critical contributions
across the spectrum of human genetics and cancer
research. Among Dr. Siminovitch’s many national
and international honours, he is a Companion
of the Order of Canada and was awarded the
Gairdner Foundation Wightman Award.
Elinore Siminovitch began her writing career composing short stories. She took up the craft of
playwriting in the late 1960s and authored over 30 plays, nearly all reflecting on socio-political
issues and her interests in feminism and political change. Elinore won awards for her plays
including Theatre Ontario’s inaugural Playwrights Showcase Prize for A Man in the House, and
the Canadian Jewish Playwriting contest for Hannah. Her prize-winning play, Big X Little Y,
which explores gender stereotyping, has had a number of productions and has been particularly
of interest to colleges and high schools across Canada. Elinore passed away in 1995.
Le Docteur Lou Siminovitch a joué un rôle de premier plan dans les grandes découvertes
du monde médical du siècle dernier. Il a été un pionnier de la recherche sur les causes
génétiques de la dystrophie musculaire et de la fibrose cystique et il a contribué de façon
très significative aux progrès de la recherche dans les domaines de la génétique et du cancer.
Parmi ses nombreuses distinctions au niveau national et international, le Docteur Siminovitch
est Compagnon de l’Ordre du Canada et il a reçu le Gairdner Foundation Wightman Award.
Elinore Siminovitch a commencé sa carrière d’écrivain en composant des nouvelles. Elle s’est
mise à écrire des pièces de théâtre vers la fin des années 60 et elle a écrit plus de 30 pièces,
qui se penchent presque toutes sur des questions d’ordre sociopolitique et reflètent son intérêt
pour le féminisme et les changements politiques. Elinore a remporté des prix pour ses pièces
y compris le premier prix Playwrights Showcase de Theatre Ontario pour A Man in the House
et le Canadian Jewish playwrighting contest pour Hannah. Sa pièce primée, Big X Little Y
qui explore les stéréotypes relatifs au genre a connu de nombreuses productions, notamment

MICHEL MARC BOUCHARD “The prestige of the Siminovitch Prize reminds us all of the importance
of theatre and its creative artists in our society. The generosity of the
reward is an emphatic recognition of the impact of the artistic process
on our theatrical and civil communities. It is with the greatest of pride
that I find myself among the finalists for the Siminovitch Prize, these
extraordinary writers who are living proof of the great vitality and astounding diversity
of our theatre.”
Bouchard’s writing marries a mature and poetic voice with an adventurous theatricality. He
creates compelling and irreverent characters; often outsiders trying to negotiate their way
through a difficult world in plays such as Lilies and Christina,The Girl King. His work has been
widely seen across Canada in both French and English, including productions at the Stratford
and Shaw Festivals.

L’écriture de Michel Marc Bouchard marie une voix poétique accomplie à une théâtralité
aventureuse. Il crée des personnages engageants et irrévérencieux; souvent des marginaux
qui essaient de se négocier un passage dans un monde difficile dans des pièces comme Les
feluettes et Christine, la reine-garçon. Ses pièces ont été jouées maintes fois au Canada, en
français et en anglais, y compris des productions aux festivals de Stratford et Shaw.
OLIVIER CHOINIÈRE “I am extremely proud and touched to be among the four finalists for
the Siminovitch Prize. Regardless of the outcome, I am encouraged to
take more risks, to be a bit crazier and freer.”
Choinière is known as a provocative risk-taker, and as someone who is
always questioning and reinventing his theatre. He is well known for
his early play Autodafé, and more recently for Félicité. This play was subsequently produced
as Bliss at London’s Royal Court, and Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times in a translation by Caryl
Churchill.

Olivier Choinière est connu comme un auteur qui prend des risques et comme quelqu’un qui
questionne et réinvente sans cesse le théâtre. Il s’est rendu célèbre avec Autodafé, puis
Félicité. Cette dernière a été produite sous le titre de Bliss au Royal Court de Londres et au
Buddies in Bad Times à Toronto, dans une traduction de Caryl Churchill.
HANNAH MOSCOVITCH “The Siminovitch Prize has honoured the Canadian writers and theatre
professionals I most admire. It’s huge to find out you belong with them,
that your work is in their tradition, deserving of being grouped with
theirs.”
Moscovitch’s plays take on big issues as seen through the emotional
and moral struggles of her complex characters. Coming out of indie theatre, she brings
sensitivity and wisdom to plays such as East of Berlin, which explores the lingering effects
of the Holocaust many years later, and This Is War, where a group of Canadian soldiers are
forced to confront a disturbing incident in Afghanistan.

Les pièces de Hannah Moscovitch s’attaquent à de grandes questions vues à travers les
difficultés émotives et morales de personnages complexes. Issue du théâtre indépendant,
elle insuffle sensibilité et sagesse dans des pièces comme East of Berlin, qui explore les
effets à long terme de l’Holocauste bien des années plus tard, et This Is War, où un groupe
de soldats canadiens doit faire face à un incident gênant en Afghanistan.
COLLEEN MURPHY “To be chosen as a finalist for the Siminovitch Prize is to feel that
one’s work is held in high regard by excellent artists who live their
whole lives in the theatre and who know how exacting and timeconsuming, how challenging and exhilarating it is to write for the
stage. To be chosen to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the
finest playwrights in this country is indeed an honour.”
Murphy’s tough, hard-hitting plays pull back the curtain on disturbing subjects that we often
don’t want to look at. But her stories are told in an intimate setting through deeply human
characters. The December Man (L’homme de décembre) is driven by the Montreal Massacre,
and her recent play Pig Girl was inspired by the murders of the missing women in Vancouver.

Les pièces de Colleen Murphy ne font pas de cadeau: elles lèvent le voile sur des sujets
difficiles que, souvent, nous ne voulons pas regarder. Mais ses histoires sont contées dans
un cadre intime à travers des personnages profondément humains. The December Man
(L’homme de décembre) tourne autour du Massacre de Montréal, et sa toute récente Pig Girl
s’inspire des meurtres des femmes disparues à Vancouver.

JOHN VAN BUREK, Jury Chair
John Van Burek has worked as a director, teacher and translator in both English and French
for over forty years. He is the founder and Artistic Director of Toronto’s Pleiades Theatre,
a company which produces plays from languages and cultures other than English, and he
was founding Artistic Director of Théâtre français de Toronto. He has translated over 60
plays, including major works by Michel Tremblay, Marivaux and Goldoni. He has taught at the
National Theatre School, Ryerson and York University.
John Van Burek, metteur en scène, professeur et traducteur, travaille en anglais et en français
depuis plus de quarante ans. Il est Directeur artistique fondateur de Pleiades Theatre,
compagnie qui monte des pièces de langues et de cultures autres que l’anglais; John a aussi
été fondateur du Théâtre français de Toronto. Il a traduit plus de 60 pièces, y compris des
œuvres de Michel Tremblay, Marivaux et Goldoni. Il a enseigné à l’École nationale de théâtre,

RACHEL DITOR
Rachel Ditor is a dramaturg, director, and the literary manager of the Arts Club Theatre
in Vancouver. Rachel manages the commissioning and development of new plays for the
company, the LEAP program for teen playwrights, a dramaturgy internship program with the
University of British Columbia, production dramaturgy, and the ReACT public play reading
series. She has worked as a dramaturg on new plays with companies across Canada including
the National Arts Centre and the Banff Playwrights Colony. She teaches dramaturgy at UBC.
Rachel Ditor est conseillère dramaturgique, metteure en scène et directrice littéraire du Arts
Club Theatre à Vancouver. Rachel gère les commandes et le développement de nouvelles
pièces pour la compagnie, le programme LEAP pour dramaturges adolescents à l’université de
Colombie-Britannique, elle conseille en dramaturgie de production, et elle dirige le programme
ReACT de mise en lecture publique de nouveaux textes. Rachel travaille comme conseillère
dramaturgique sur de nouvelles pièces avec des compagnies à l’échelle du pays. Elle enseigne
la dramaturgie à UBC.
BRIAN DOOLEY
Brian Dooley is the Director of Play Development at The Citadel Theatre (Edmonton), and
is also Directeur artistique et général of L’UniThéâtre, Alberta’s only professional French
language theatre. He’s been an actor, writer, director, producer and teacher for over thirty
years and has been involved in the development of new plays for a variety of companies
across the country, including Playwrights Workshop (Montréal), Factory Theatre (Toronto),
The Banff Playwrights Colony, The National Film Board of Canada and Montréal’s Le Centre
des Auteurs Dramatiques (CEAD).
Brian Dooley est responsable du développement de nouveaux textes au Citadel Theatre
d’Edmonton. Il est aussi Directeur artistique et général de L’UniThéâtre, seul théâtre
professionnel de langue française de l’Alberta. Il est acteur, auteur, metteur en scène,
producteur et professeur depuis plus de trente ans et il a participé au développement de
nouvelles pièces pour un grand nombre de compagnies parmi lesquelles Playwrights Workshop

BRENDAN HEALY
Brendan Healy is the Artistic Director of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto. Notable
Buddies productions that Brendan has directed include: Tim Luscombe’s PIG, Daniel MacIvor’s
Arigato, Tokyo, Jean Genet’s The Maids, Nina Arsenault’s The Silicone Diaries, Sarah Kane’s
Blasted, and Independent Auntie Theatre’s Breakfast. Brendan is a graduate of the National
Theatre School’s Directing Program and he has trained extensively with one of the pioneers of
the American avant-garde, Anne Bogart and the SITI Company. Brendan is a regular instructor
at the National Theatre School of Canada.

JEAN-DENIS LEDUC
Jean-Denis Leduc is the Founding Director of Théâtre de La Manufacture, created in 1975,
as well as that of its performance space, La Licorne. At the helm of La Manufacture, JeanDenis Leduc has showcased powerful work by contemporary playwrights, from Canada and
elsewhere, whose plays question the world in which we live. Today, as part-time founding
director, he develops new projects while acting as Artistic Director on some productions. He
also works as dramaturg for playwrights in residence, while overseeing the international
development of the company.
Jean-Denis Leduc a fondé le Théâtre de La Manufacture en 1975 et il en assure la direction
artistique de même que sa salle de spectacle, La Licorne. À la barre de cette compagnie,
Jean-Denis Leduc a produit des œuvres puissantes d’auteurs contemporains du Canada et
d’ailleurs dont les textes interrogent le monde dans lequel nous vivons. Aujourd’hui, en tant que
Directeur artistique à temps partiel, il développe de nouveaux projets et assume la direction de
certaines productions. Il travaille également comme dramaturge auprès d’auteurs en résidence

These Gemini Award-winning performers and writing partners (Slings and Arrows) are
collaborating on three new projects.
SUSAN COYNE
Susan Coyne has played leading roles in theatre across Canada and is
a Founding Member of Soulpepper Theatre. Her writing for the theatre
includes two original plays and adaptations of plays by Chekhov and
Turgenev. She’s the author of the best-selling memoir, Kingfisher Days,
and co-writer of CBC’s The Best Laid Plans.
MARK McKINNEY
Mark McKinney was co-creator, writer and ensemble member of the
award-winning series, The Kids in the Hall. He’s written and produced
with Lorne Michaels on Saturday Night Live, and with Aaron Sorkin
on both Sportsnight and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He’s was a
producer and the showrunner on the satirical series Less Than Kind, an
Executive Producer on Picnicface, and a writer and actor on Michael:Tuesdays and Thursdays.
