The Siminovitch Prize shines a spotlight on excellence and innovation in Canadian theatre
with an annual prize worth $100,000.
Over a three-year cycle, the prize honours a professional director, playwright or designer who
is an acknowledged leader in the theatre and whose work is transformative and influential.
The prize also recognizes the importance of mentorship to support emerging talent. The
recipient is awarded $75,000 and, in turn, chooses a protégé to receive $25,000. This year’s
Protégé Prize is generously supported by the RBC Foundation Emerging Artists Project.
The Siminovitch Prize was launched in 2001 to honour the values and achievements of the
distinguished scientist Lou Siminovitch and his late wife Elinore Siminovitch, who was a
pioneering playwright. The Siminovitch Prize is the largest prize in Canadian theatre.

Sur un cycle de trois ans, le Prix honore un metteur en scène, un dramaturge ou un designer
professionnel qui fait figure de proue dans le domaine du théâtre et dont le travail est
reconnu pour sa portée et son influence. Le Prix reconnaît aussi l’importance du mentorat
pour soutenir les talents émergents. Le lauréat reçoit 75,000$ et choisit à son tour un
protégé qui reçoit 25,000$. Cette année, le Prix du Protégé est généreusement parrainé par
le Projet Artistes Émergents de RBC.
Le Prix Siminovitch a été créé en 2001 pour célébrer les valeurs et les accomplissements
de l’éminent scientifique Lou Siminovitch et sa regrettée épouse Elinore Siminovitch qui fut
une pionnière en dramaturgie. Le Prix Siminovitch est la plus importante récompense en
théâtre au Canada.

Dr. Lou Siminovitch has played an instrumental
role in some of the past century’s most important
medical discoveries. He is a pioneer in the research
for the genetic causes of muscular dystrophy and
cystic fibrosis and has made critical contributions
across the spectrum of human genetics and cancer
research. Among Dr. Siminovitch’s many national
and international honours, he is a Companion
of the Order of Canada and was awarded the
Gairdner Foundation Wightman Award.
Elinore Siminovitch began her writing career composing short stories. She took up the craft of
playwriting in the late 1960s and authored over 30 plays, nearly all reflecting on socio-political
issues and her interests in feminism and political change. Elinore won awards for her plays
including Theatre Ontario’s inaugural Playwrights Showcase Prize for A Man in the House and
the Canadian Jewish Playwriting contest for Hannah. Her prize-winning play Big X Little Y,
which explores gender stereotyping, has had a number of productions and has been particularly
of interest to colleges and high schools across Canada. Elinore passed away in 1995.
Le Docteur Lou Siminovitch a joué un rôle de premier plan dans les grandes découvertes
du monde médical du siècle dernier. Il a été un pionnier de la recherche sur les causes
génétiques de la dystrophie musculaire et de la fibrose cystique et il a contribué de façon
très significative aux progrès de la recherche dans les domaines de la génétique et du cancer.
Parmi ses nombreuses distinctions au niveau national et international, le Docteur Siminovitch
est Compagnon de l’Ordre du Canada et il a reçu le Gairdner Foundation Wightman Award.
Elinore Siminovitch a commencé sa carrière d’écrivain en composant des nouvelles. Elle s’est
mise à écrire des pièces de théâtre vers la fin des années 60 et elle a écrit plus de 30 pièces,
qui se penchent presque toutes sur des questions d’ordre sociopolitique et reflètent son intérêt
pour le féminisme et les changements politiques. Elinore a remporté des prix pour ses pièces
y compris le premier prix Playwrights Showcase de Theatre Ontario pour A Man in the House

BRETTA GERECKE “Nothing quite compares to the feeling of being shortlisted for the
Siminovitch prize; it makes me light-headed, giggly, incredulous and
joyful. This prize is very humbling and a true roller-coaster ride; I feel
so lucky to be in such company and in a career I absolutely adore.”
Gerecke’s work is seen in Canadian theatres as diverse as the Cirque
du Soleil, the Stratford Festival and Edmonton’s Catalyst Theatre. Equally accomplished as
a set, costume and lighting designer, her signature style is bold and playful and her imagery
ranges from a sensuous beauty to the beautifully grotesque.
« Rien ne peut se comparer à ce qu’on ressent quand on est finaliste pour le Prix
Siminovitch; ça me monte à la tête, ça me fait glousser de rire, je suis à la fois incrédule et
joyeuse. Ce prix est très intimidant, comme des montagnes russes; je me sens tellement
chanceuse d’être en si bonne compagnie et dans une carrière que j’adore. »
On a pu voir le travail de Bretta Gerecke dans des théâtres canadiens aussi divers que le
Cirque du Soleil, le Festival de Stratford et le Catalyst Theatre d’Edmonton. Également
accomplie comme conceptrice de décors, de costumes et d’éclairage, son style distinctif est
hardi et ludique et ses images vont d’une beauté sensuelle à une esthétique grotesque.
ANICK LA BISSONNIÈRE “Of course, it is an honour to be shortlisted for the Siminovitch Prize,
but being nominated for the fourth time recognizes the fact that my
work has remained among the very best over the last twelve years. For
me, this is already a prize!”
La Bissonnière’s early training as an architect brings a sophisticated
sculptural beauty to her set designs. Often epic in scope, her work is both eye-popping and
emotionally powerful. She has worked with dozens of influential Canadian directors including
André Brassard, Gilles Maheu, Matthew Jocelyn and her ongoing collaborator, Siminovitch
Prize laureate Brigitte Haentjens.
« C’est bien sûr un honneur d’être finaliste du Prix Siminovitch mais l’être pour la
quatrième fois est une forme de reconnaissance que mon travail s’est maintenu parmi
l’élite durant les douze dernières années. Pour moi c’est déjà un prix ! »
La formation d’Anick La Bissonnière comme architecte confère une beauté sculpturale à ses
décors. De proportions souvent épiques, ses créations sont à la fois visuellement frappantes
et chargées d’émotion. Elle a collaboré avec des douzaines de metteurs en scène canadiens
de prestige parmi lesquels André Brassard, Gilles Maheu, Matthew Jocelyn et sa fréquente
collaboratrice, la lauréate du Prix Siminovitch Brigitte Haentjens.

TREVOR SCHWELLNUS “This event is a landmark in my life: like my first design, when I
discovered that I could create worthwhile scenography and love the
process of making it – or the first project I conceived and nurtured to
production, when I took true ownership of my vocation as an artist – I
feel now a renewed sense of my place in a culture that is asking me to
consider what it is that I contribute.”
Schwellnus is a master of invention who creates outstanding visual effects with minimal
resources. An artist who thinks outside the box, he is celebrated for his evocative set and
lighting designs and has raised the visual bar for Toronto independent theatre. He is also
artistic producer of Aluna Theatre and committed to creating theatre for and about diverse
voices.
« Cet événement est une grand étape dans ma vie: comme mon premier design, quand
j’ai découvert que je pouvais créer une scénographie valable et aimer le processus –
ou le premier projet que j’ai créé et mené jusqu’à la production, quand j’ai assumé ma
vocation d’artiste – je sens maintenant que ma place est confirmée dans une culture qui
me demande de penser à ce que j’y contribue. »
Trevor Schwellnus est un maître de l’invention qui crée des effets visuels époustouflants avec
un minimum de ressources. Artiste à la pensée originale, il est reconnu pour ses concepts
de décor et d’éclairage évocateurs qui ont haussé la barre pour les théâtres indépendants de
Toronto. Il est aussi producteur artistique de Aluna Theatre et se donne comme tâche de créer
du théâtre pour et au sujet des voix diverses.
NANCY TOBIN “My passion to create sound designs that participate as an intrinsic
part in the scenography and dramatic development of a play is
relentless. A great honour it is to see my efforts recognized by a jury
of peers appointed to identify excellent and innovative trajectories in
Canadian theatre.”
Tobin’s innovative and original approach to sound design is unique in Canadian theatre. She
creates new ways of listening to the world that are hypnotic, strange and beautiful. She is
lauded for her artistry by celebrated Quebec directors such as François Girard, Denis Marleau
and Wajdi Mouawad. Her curiosity about technology and her drive to create the perfect
instruments for each project are unparalleled.

Canada. Elle crée de nouvelles façons d’écouter le monde qui sont envoûtantes, étranges et

BOB WHITE, Jury Chair
Bob White has been a dramaturg and director in the Canadian theatre for forty years, with a
strong reputation for developing Canadian plays including the work of Paul Ledoux, George F.
Walker, Brad Fraser, Eugene Stickland and Stephen Massicotte, among many others. In January
of 2012, he was appointed Director of New Plays at the Stratford Festival after four seasons as
a consulting director. At Stratford, he was dramaturg on Kate Hennig’s The Last Wife, Michel
Marc Bouchard’s Christina, The Girl King, John Murrell’s Taking Shakespeare and the Jillian
Keiley productions of The Diary of Anne Frank and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

connu pour avoir contribué au développement de nouveaux textes, notamment de Paul

PHILIP AKIN
Philip Akin is the Artistic Director of Obsidian Theatre Company in Toronto. As a director, actor
and producer, he has been involved in the arts for over 40 years. His numerous awards and
nominations include the William Melbourne Award for the Celebration of Toronto’s Cultural
Life (2014), Life Membership Award from Canadian Actors Equity Association for outstanding
contributions to the performing arts within our jurisdiction (2014) and Dora Nominations for
Best Director in the General Theatre Division 2008, 2011 and 2012 (winning in 2012). He is
also proud to be the Chair of the Humber Theatre program’s Advisory Committee and the Vice
Chair of the Board for the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre.
Philip Akin est directeur artistique de la compagnie Obsidian Theatre à Toronto. Il œuvre
dans le domaine des arts depuis plus de 40 ans en tant que metteur en scène, acteur et

GIDEON ARTHURS
Gideon Arthurs is the CEO of the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS), the only institution in
the country entirely devoted to providing professional training in all of the theatre crafts, in both
official languages. Before joining NTS, he served as General Manager of Tarragon Theatre in
Toronto for close to three years, where he led several important projects including improvements
of the theatre’s equipment and facilities, as well as a major audience engagement program.
Before that, he was the Executive Director of the Toronto Fringe Festival.
Gideon Arthurs est le directeur général de l’École nationale de théâtre du Canada (ÉNT), la seule
institution au pays entièrement dédiée à l’enseignement de tous les métiers du théâtre, en anglais
et en français. Il a occupé le poste de directeur général du Tarragon Theatre, à Toronto, pendant
près de trois ans. Il y a porté plusieurs projets d’envergure, dont l’amélioration des installations
et des équipements du théâtre ainsi que l’élaboration d’une vaste stratégie de participation des
publics. Il a auparavant été directeur administratif du Toronto Fringe Festival.
GENEVIÈVE BLAIS
Inspired by the wish to create impressionistic theatrical experiences, Geneviève Blais founded the
Théâtre à corps perdus in 2003, with a group of like-minded artists whom she met while at the
National Theatre School of Canada. Through this company, she explores contemporary writing that
evokes things for which we cannot find the words, things for which we have no words. Her approach
leaves a central place for the writing of the body, in dialogue with the architecture of the space.
Animée du désir d’orchestrer des expériences théâtrales impressionnistes, Geneviève Blais
fonde en 2003 le Théâtre à corps perdus, avec des complices rencontrés dans le cadre de
sa formation en mise en scène à l’École nationale de théâtre du Canada. Au sein de cette
compagnie, elle fouille les écritures contemporaines qui évoquent ce pour quoi les mots
nous manquent, ce qui nous laisse sans mots. Sa démarche accorde une place centrale à la
dramaturgie du corps, en dialogue avec l’architecture de l’espace.
KIM COLLIER
Kim Collier is a director and the co-founder and co-director of the Electric Company Theatre in
Vancouver. The company is recognized nationally as a driving force behind the resurgence of
activity in Vancouver’s independent theatre scene. Under her direction, the company created
a dozen original works through an intensive collaborative process including three landmark
site-specific productions. She also has strong presence on major stages and festivals across
Canada with productions at Theatre Calgary, Festival TransAmerique, the National Arts
Centre, the Citadel Theatre and Canadian Stage. In 2011 her live-cinematic interpretation of
No Exit was presented by the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.
Kim Collier est metteure en scène, co-fondatrice et co-directrice de la compagnie Electric Company
Theatre à Vancouver. Cette compagnie est reconnue à l’échelle du pays comme ayant été le principal
moteur du renouveau sur la scène du théâtre indépendant à Vancouver. Sous la direction de Kim, la
compagnie a créé une douzaine d’œuvres originales par un processus de collaboration intense, y
