Trois semaines de rencontres, d’échanges et d’activités, partout à Montréal.
De la conférence à la visite guidée interactive, de la rencontre d’un survivant à
l’atelier de recherches en archives et de la discussion au documentaire : c’est
l’occasion de lier passé et présent et de rencontrer l’autre dans sa différence.
En s’appuyant sur l’histoire de l’Holocauste, cet événement citoyen sensibilise
au vivre-ensemble.
Une initiative du Centre commémoratif de l’Holocauste à Montréal.
Le Centre commémoratif de l’Holocauste à Montréal fait la promotion de
notre responsabilité collective face au respect de la diversité. Ses programmes
éducatifs transmettent la mémoire de l’Holocauste tout en sensibilisant à la
lutte contre les discriminations.

Holocaust Education Series
October 29-November 16, 2008
The Holocaust Education Series: Three weeks of meetings, exchanges and
activities throughout Montreal.
From lectures to guided tours, from a survivor testimony to a research
workshop on archives, the Holocaust Education Series links the past and our
present and is designed to raise the awareness of all Montrealers to the issues
of discrimination.
Important lessons are learned through the history of the Holocaust on how
citizens can better live together.
The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre is committed to promoting respect
for diversity and the sanctity of all human life. Its educational programs aim to
assure the transmission of the memory of the Holocaust and to sensitize the
public to the importance of combating discrimination.

The 3 panelists will discuss how literature helped them to gain a deeper
understanding of what their parents experienced during the Holocaust.
Through the artistic process, they further their understanding about
their parents’ losses.

Every Day Lasts A Year: A Jewish Family’s Correspondence from Poland,
Simon Schneiderman, author of Preoccupied with my Father. The
panel will be moderated by Greta Hofmann Nemiroff, writer, author of

The Search, an educational illustrated novel, gives the main facts about
the Holocaust through fictional Jewish families. Participants will share
their ideas about new ways to use art and oral history in an educational
setting in Canada.

Monika Hertwig, daughter of the Nazi commander Amon Goeth, who
was portrayed in «Schindler’s List», reaches out to a woman who had
been enslaved by her father during the war. More than sixty years after
the Holocaust, these two women meet.

Department of Religion, and member of the Board of Directors of The

A Yaron Zilberman Documentary, 80 min., Israël, 2004
In 1938, the Nazis shut down the legendary Jewish sports club, Hakoah
Vienna. The swimmers managed to flee the country before the war
broke out. Sixty five years later, Zilberman arranges a reunion in their
old swimming pool in Vienna.

Swimming in Auschwitz
A Jon Kean Documentary, 63 min., USA, 2007
Six Jewish women, from different countries and backgrounds, found
themselves deported to the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau
during WWII. Through their eyes, the film allows to learn about the
female experience of the Holocaust.

Batia Bettman lived in Ivye, a small Polish village where Jews had lived
for 400 years. When the Nazis invaded, approximately half of the town’s
Jews were shot. The people were transported to a concentration camp
or forced into the ghetto as were Batia and her family. At the end of
the war, Batia and her mother were among the 40 sole survivors of the
population of 5,000 Jews.

Mr. Porepa was born in Krakow, Poland in 1924 and is the only survivor
of his entire family. As a teenager, he endured forced labour, internment
in three concentration camps and a death march.

Born in 1925 in Hungary, Hermann Gruenwald’s idyllic childhood was
shattered when he and his family were deported to Auschwitz in the
summer of 1944. He had to witness the horrors of three camps and a

En mai 1940, lorsque les Allemands occupèrent la Belgique, Marcel
Tenenbaum n’avait que 5 ans. Avec sa famille, il trouva refuge en 1942
dans la maison d’une famille catholique belge. En 1944, après avoir
été découvert par la Gestapo et envoyé au camp de transit de Malines,
Marcel évita de justesse la déportation à Auschwitz.

The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre
Paul Herczeg was a teenager when the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944.
He and his family were forced onto sealed freight cars destined for the
Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Paul’s mother and father were killed
in the gas chambers. Paul and his sister Irma are the only survivors of
the Holocaust in their family.

Concentration camps were part of targeted Nazi urban renewal. Dr.
van Pelt will discuss the nature of the relationship between architecture
that embodied Nazi aspirations and the sites that fell under its dark
shadow.

massivement en Europe de l’Est. Le père Patrick Desbois
témoigne de son engagement et de ses recherches pour
l’identification et l’expertise des sites en Ukraine.

research on the execution of 1.5 million Ukrainian Jews during
the Holocaust and the mass grave sites currently being identified
in the Ukraine.
A French Catholic priest, Father Desbois is head of the
Commission for Relations with Judaism of the French Bishops’
Conference, Consultant to the Vatican for the Jewish Religion
and Director of the Yahad-in Unum Association.
Event organized in partnership with Yahad-In Unum and the
Canadian War Museum.
