GLIESSE 581 C Photographie noir et blanc sur fine art baryta 2014 17’’ x 22’’ Prix de départ : 620$ Black and white photograph on fine art baryta 2014 17’’ x 22’’ Starting price: 620$ The circle in the centre is composed of leeches and a single glass. These black invertebrates take on the circular form of the container. The sphere may suggest an organic mandala, an oriental gesture or a surrealist star. I’ve chosen to to see it as an exo-planet, hence the title Gliesse 581 C. But it seems reasonable to me to approach it with a simple aesthetic reading. TROPIQUES Collage sur papier 2013 13’’ x 15’’ Prix de départ : 700$ Collage on paper 2013 13’’ x 15’’ Starting price: 700$ I put my compositions together using cut-out pieces of coloured cardboard in a way that echoes the solid colours of painting. An artificial world crops up that allows me to question the one I live in. The nature that we domesticate, the food that we prepare, and the objects that we make – I’ve always felt that these things point to rather strange customs, which serve as a starting-point for these scenarios of stylized contours. SOLARIZATION Plâtre, solutions pour cyanotype (ferricyanure de potassium et ammoniacal vert) 2014 17’’ x 13‘’ x 1,25‘’ VENDU Plaster, cyanotype solution (potassium ferricyanide and green ammoniacal) 2014 17’’ x 13‘’ x 1,25‘’ Starting price: 400$ Solarization is part of a series of plasterboard worked through the intervention of different photographic chemistries and bleach, one of the main elements of my experimental work. The use of physical and chemical processes allows the material to almost make a "selftransformation" to become artwork by itself. Here the dry plasterboard is soaked in a mixture of potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate (green) - chemicals used to make cyanotypes - to become photographic, questioning the duality of a process of unveiling by light, as erosion movement, and wear. ON MARCHE EN CRIANT (1) Peinture et médium acrylique, polyuréthane, bois 2013 12,25’’ x 9,12’’ x 6’’ Prix de départ : 300$ Paint and acrylic medium, polyurethane, wood 2013 12.25’’ x 9.12’’ x 6’’ Starting price: 300$ I work with a visual vocabulary that is organic and embodied, often drawing its energy from techniques learned and materials handled during construction and renovation projects. My approach to painting and to the object is definitely exploratory: the immediate aim is not to achieve a precise aesthetic effect; the approach is honed as the project develops, but it is never the result of a pre-established vision. At the start, I simply try to create a situation where different mediums and materials can come together in the hope of producing an unexpected whole that reworks conventional uses of those materials. NEW SPILL No.4 (Con razon ó sin ella) Pétrole de l'Exxon Valdez en 1989, déversement sur toile, huile absorbante, poche imperméable, bouteille de pétrole partiellement utilisée (souvenir) 2014 24’’ x 36’’ Prix de départ : 550$ Petroleum from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill on canvas, absorbent oil, waterproof pocket, partly used bottle with petroleum (souvenir) 2014 24’’ x 36’’ Starting price: 550$ New Spill No.4 (Con razon ó sin ella) is part of the series New Spills, a group of works that use petroleum from the Exxon Valdez and BP oil spills as art material. The works aim to question the nature of the oil spill as an event, as well as its representation and potential banalization by social, economic and communication systems at work. The pieces are presented as material actors that spread the original spill, this time through the context of art. PRINCE OF BABEL Huile sur toile 2011-2012 14,5’’ x 17’’ Prix de départ : 999$ Oil on canvas 2011-2012 14.5’’ x 17’’ Starting price: 999$ The Prince of Babel is an interpretation of the noted “Tower of Babel,” a building rescued by the Judeo-Christian imaginary and built by men in times immemorial. This tower has beeen associated with the origin of the Zigurat. It is significant also to the origin of languages. In the mystic tradition of the West, an analogy was made between the temples of antiquity - such as the Egyptian pyramids, the temple of Jerusalem or the tower of Babel - and worship of the cosmos and the universe. In Tarot, the secret of the tower represents chaos and instability. Counter to divine depictions of the sky representing the mystery of the star, the image of the tower symbolizes the instability of life and the transience of the human condition. The Tower of Babel in ruins is an image of man fallen from grace. Snowbirds is a social documentary study of Breezy Hill RV trailer park, a tightly knit community of French Québécois retirees living in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Those who flock to Breezy Hill have succeeded in their life plan - retiring in their own version of paradise. The residents are likely the last of their kind to migrate to Florida during the winter months, living out their version of the ‘American Dream’ within its white picket fences. Snowbirds is a memorialization of a distinct chapter of Quebec identity and history, aiming to foster an insight into a culture that remains uniquely foreign to me. After Reflecting Thoughts About You is a performance presented at Galerie Espace Projet in Montreal on June 15 and 29, 2014, in the context of the exhibition De la performativité à la théâtralité curated by Pascale Tremblay. After Reflecting Thoughts About You attempts to frame, in a single image, the evolving and contemplative nature of the performative action. Without treating it as a documentary trace, the image’s flattening of space and the original time of the work does, nonetheless, try to open up a narrative, by the simple desire to associate the composition, or the abundance of textures, colours, and motifs, to an imagined past happening. Simon Grenier-Poirier first became interested in questions of Space and Matter while continuing his research into the phenomenon of Erosion. The works resemble images of the sky at night. However, this is far from being the case. These images were created in the studio by using small plastic pellets and a system custom-built by the artist.
