NÉGATIF 17 Aquarelle, collage et peinture aérosol sur papier Somerset 2011 11’’ x 15’’ VENDU Watercolour, collage and aerosol paint on Somerset paper 2011 11’’ x 15’’ Starting price: 800$ Jean-François Lauda's practice grapples with the exploration and disintegration of painting. Embracing the unexpected and seeking to understand the residual traces of the image, the artist's research is characterized by gradual formal transformations as well as the raw application of colour. Lauda's compositions reveal a constant desire to shift the susceptible elements of chance into a kind of aesthetics of finesse. Lauda was part of the Painting Project at Galerie UQÀM in 2013. More recently, his work was shown at Erin Stump Projects in Toronto in 2014. His works are part of private collections such as Hydro-Québec and Heenan Blaikie. Inspired by mental images and fictional psychoanalytic sessions, these images – mostly of ephemeral installations – explore the link between everyday objects and their symbolic power. Shot in daylight, these fragile assemblages produced a certain tension in the process of their creation. The precarious constructions are composed exclusively of objects found in the studio. Like in a laboratory, each image can be understood as a sample, an attempt to give form to various expressions of the unconscious. Régicide (6) questions the legacy of the busts that remain from ancient empires. Rather than imitating their completeness, I take them as a source of inspiration, exposing them to contaminations and subversions of their original motives. Regicide means the assassination of a king or the death sentence handed down to him by decree of a legislative assembly. Composed of tensions and ruptures, this work is a balancing game where the status of the painted object is placed under duress. Popular belief has it that the flight of birds is an augur of good or bad tidings. The birds of a photograph are linked with the aid of a pencil, creating an aleatory motif as part of an imagined attempt to decipher the message. UNTITLED Aquarelle, encre et pastel sur papier 2011 25,6’’ x 30,32’’ VENDU Watercolour, ink and pastel on paper 2011 25,6’’ x 30,32’’ Starting price: 600$ My approach to making things prioritizes intuition, playing with chance and control and emphasizing a loose process that is sensitive to the flow of the materials being used. Made with watercolour and ink, this drawing is an imagined dreamscape that is psychically and emotionally charged, blurring the boundary between the internal body and an external natural landscape. L’ÉTÉ QUI NOUS SUIT Impression chromogénique sur aluminium 2011-2014 17’’ x 17,5’’ VENDU C-print on aluminium 2011-2014 17’’ x 17.5’’ Starting price: 330$ In L’Été qui nous suit, the concept of paper as performer is explored, with paper appearing as both a material presence and a device for creating sensitive images through the lens of the camera. Touching on the notions of psychogeography, the resulting digital work registers as a calculated mirage, with paper as a vehicle for shedding light on the intricacies, the enigmatic complicity, and limits between modes of thought and poetry. L’Été qui nous suit, a moving mirage, points to both the image within and the realm outside the frame. Carolyne Scenna is an artist who explores the spaces – as much physical as dreamlike – of the photographic image. Cutting across her works are questions of death and metamorphosis, scenes of slight mockery that suggest a new sacralization of the work of the artist. Employing found images and images collected from friends and relatives, as well as from her own photo albums, she builds relationships between numerous collections or slideshows, where the memories of others are arranged in a constant modelling and a perpetual exploding of subjectivity. Black Matter is a series of photogravure prints representing a void appearing on forest landscapes. This void appears in turns as a door, an opening to another dimension or a black hole that might end up swallowing the whole scene. This series turns its back on reality and resorts to a whole range of photographic techniques – traditionally devoted to reproducing reality – to produce a new one. » (Edouard Pailleron) DÉSILLUSION VISUELLE (1) Huile et acrylique sur bois 2014 23’’ x 23’’ Prix de départ : 450$ Oil and acrylic on wood 2014 23’’ x 23’’ Starting price: 450$ The series Désillusion visuelle is made up of paintings whose interiors are layered with different repetitive, hard-to-grasp, imperfectly geometric forms. Standing in front of such images, the viewer may feel a lack of understanding not unlike those who find themselves in a state of disillusionment. Some of the motifs in this series are traced nervously in keeping with the rhythm of the domestic activities that they imitate. These motifs highlight a possible link between art and the everyday, in the to-and-fro between exactitude and the loss of control. « Every reality is a disillusion. SHROUD#3 Huile sur impression numérique sur panneau 2014 22,75’’ x 18,75’’ x 2,5’’ Prix de départ : 399$ Oil on digital print on panel 2014 22.75’’ x 18.75’’ x 2.5’’ Starting price: 399$ My work in general involves a technique of combining photographic prints with oil glazes with the intention to distort the identity of the work as object and image. Shroud 3 belongs to a small series of works featuring images of the same plastic-wrapped object photographed from different angles and in different light, then treated with variations of blue-tinted glazes. - Max Wright
