I encourage each and everyone to participate actively starting with our Carousel Workshop and Luncheon scheduled for Thursday, October 7, 2010. At the provincial level, our District, Sudbury-Manitoulin, placed 4th in the recruitment contest (per cent standings) for the first quarter results of 2010. Let us keep up the good work! Congratulations and thank you to all our members for their support. The Provincial Executive is seeking nominations for RTO/ERO’s Representative on the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Benefits Adjudication Committee. At a special meeting last June, your local executive committee passed a motion to submit Ron Robert’s name as a nominee. We at the executive are convinced that Ron would be an asset to the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Committee. Good luck Ron! We eagerly await the Provincial Executive’s decision on this matter. See you all on Thursday, the 7th of October. Ann Dube Goodwill/Bienfaisance “When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced; live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.” Cherokee saying “Le sourire est la voix universelle de la bonté.” W.A. Ward The Goodwill/Bienfaisance committee has received the revised lists; RTO/ERO District 4 is 1550 members strong with 212 members enjoying 80+ birthdays. We appreciate each call that we receive with information which permits us to respond to our colleagues with words of support or to offer our congratulations. The 12 members of the committee will meet this fall to make plans which ensure contact with senior colleagues is maintained with cards expressing good wishes and yearly visits. Our call for help to organize Honour Guards in all the areas of our vast district was generously answered. We are planning a meeting of these 20 volunteers to distribute tags and present information to show how simple it is to honour our deceased members and bring comfort to their grieving families. “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times with the same person.” M. McLaughlin Many of our members celebrate significant wedding anniversaries, but our committee rarely receives specific information. RTO/ERO sends our congratulations to all the happy couples and their proud families. So many songs have been written about the yearning for love, the hope that true love has been found, the sorrow for love lost. A marriage which endures five, six or more decades filled with a lifetime of love might be captured in a symphony of joy, sorrow, laughter, forgiveness and endless moments of caring for each other. Bereaved colleagues have received our condolences and donations have been made to honour their loved ones. The Fall Luncheon will be held at the beautiful Laurentian Lodge, 29 km north of Elliot Lake on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Guest speaker, Ken Bondy, will address us about Elder abuse and Consumer Protection. Why not plan to take the scenic drive and join the camaraderie of our group. Jenny Ross, 705-869-2055 [email protected] Retired Women Teachers of Ontario/Organisation des enseignantes retraitées de l’Ontario (RWTO/OERO) I hope that you had a wonderful summer and didn’t get burned in the hot sun. We send our deepest sympathy to our president, Ann Dube, who lost her husband Ray on August 9, 2010. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary that month. September is the month of crisp air, gorgeous leaves and new beginnings. The children and their teachers are returning to school – but hey – we’re retired and we’re not! After a long hot summer we are hopefully rejuvenated and are ready to resume our activities. The first meeting of this Fall is on Tuesday, September 28 at 10:30 am at the Howard Johnson Hotel on Brady St. At this meeting, the Guest Speaker will be Provincial Insurance Convenor, Judy Anderson. This is your opportunity to have all of your questions answered about RWTO/OERO insurance plans. You will find Judy to be very knowledgeable! New members and guests are always welcome. Any woman who has taught at any level is eligible to join RWTO/OERO. Contact any member of the executive or any member. Come as a guest to our September meeting to see what we do and if you like it there will be registration forms available at the meeting. The dues are $40 per year. RWTO/OERO existed before RTO/ERO, in fact 10 years before! In the early days our group was called OASWT which stood for Ontario Association of Superannuated Women Teachers. The reasons these female teachers felt the need to organize themselves was to fight for increased pension benefits. The second reason, also essential, was to connect socially. Most of these teachers had never married and longed for companionship. Some Sudbury History: In 1884, the first teacher arrived in Sudbury from Ottawa. Miss Maggie Smith taught in a log cabin which was also used as the CPR office, a church, a custom’s office and an insurance agency. That multi-purpose building was located on Cedar St. Money for operating expenses, including Miss Smith’s salary, was raised at the school variety night and by Father Nolin who collected from door to door. OASWT in Sudbury was established in 1972 (charter year). The first president was Edith Jordan and there were 21 members. The provincial convention (AGM) will be held in Niagara Falls at the Hilton Hotel June 7, 8, 9, 2011. Erna Fex – Past President – 671-2711 Valma Mongeon – Area Director – 675 - 8994 Ann Dube – President – 524-3146 2010 VOLUNTEER AWARDS This year Certificates of Recognition were presented to Angela Ciccone and Mary Faris for their volunteer work within the community and abroad. The Guill Archambault Community Volunteer Award was presented to Ann Dube who has volunteered for many years and continues to do so for a variety of organizations within our community. Congratulations to all District 4 RTO/ERO members who volunteer. Carol Haneberry Attention! Les folles années de Jean-Pierre Charland Beyond the Bell... During the week of May 15 to 23, 2010, I attended the Canada Wide Science Fair in Peterborough, Ontario. I had the pleasure of ‘parenting’ 500 teens for 9 days... enough said! A very young teacher from the Rainbow board and I had 7 students from our area schools to ‘control’...But they were super kids and the fair was as exciting as any other year I have attended. We were crazy busy from 6:00 am to 12:00 midnight every day...Whew! I certainly found out that I’m not as young as I used to be. You may be wondering why an old retired bird like me went...well no one else was able to attend from our Regional Committee. I hope to change that in the coming years...Young science teachers would LOVE to attend this VERY worthwhile event! Know anyone? Thank you for promoting this special event in the teaching community. Scientifically yours Pauline Therrien Thank you! Merci! On June 9, 2010, many of my fellow retirees and I had the great pleasure of being honoured and entertained by RTO/ERO District 4. What a super job! It is seldom that volunteers are individually thanked for what we ALL do...it was very humbling! As you ALL know we do NOT volunteer for the glory but for the pleasure of knowing we are making a difference in people’s lives and in our community. Thank you so much for making us feel appreciated! Pauline Therrien Did you know that… Since 1980, the project Help Stamp out Poverty has been successful in raising more than $200,000 by processing postage stamps and envelopes recovered from incoming mail. All money raised by the stamp program is passed to Oxfam’s self-help projects around the world. If you are interested in participating in this project, you must leave a small margin when you cut around the used stamps and I also recommend that you keep them in an envelope. I will collect all your used stamps at every RTO/ERO General Meetings and send them to Oxfam afterwards. It is a very small gesture which can bring so much hope. Pauline Therrien 10 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon/Déjeuner de reconnaissance des bénévoles “A VOLUNTEER is a person who remembers to do the things that make other people happy, who takes loneliness out of the alone by talking to them, who is concerned when others are unconcerned, who has the courage to be a prophet and to say the things that have to be said for the good of all.” On Thursday, June 9, the RTO/ERO District 4 Executive Board recognized its volunteers at an appreciation luncheon at the Howard Johnson Plaza. First Vice-president, Carmaine Hall welcomed the distinguished group. President, Jacques Hallé praised the volunteers’ contributions and applauded their commitment to serve the interests of all colleagues belonging to RTO/ERO District 4. Jacques noted that the strength of our District lies in the vibrancy of its members. He emphasized how their willingness to help others impacted on the survival of the organization. Jacques thanked each and everyone for their devotion and the time they spend volunteering on behalf of RTO/ERO. » Monique Taylor AKA Judge Monique and Carmaine Hall AKA the bailiff entertained the volunteers. They jokingly accused them of being dangerously helpful, misusing their retirement to perform countless incidences of acts of caring, and inciting acts of kindness within the communities of Sudbury and Manitoulin North Shore. The volunteers were thanked for their generous spirit, their caring hearts and their unfailing support of RTO/ERO District 4. Evelyn Baxter was remembered for her work and dedication to the Newsletter Committee. Her presence will be missed. 11 VOLUNTEERS ARE SELDOM PAID, NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE WORTHLESS, BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE PRICELESS! Team RTO/ERO has again left an everlasting imprint on the hearts and minds of our community. Our participation in the RELAY FOR LIFE held on Friday, June 4, 2010 has not gone unnoticed. Other teams have commented on our generous contribution to this fundraiser. This year our team was able to collect $10,506.00. Generous with our contributions but also with our involvement in this activity: this is our way of participating in the research, in the medical advances and in the financial help. From the get-go, which is the first lap by the survivors, you can feel the energy that gets us through our many difficult moments. 18 IMPORTANT DATE! Keep Friday, June 3, 2011 in mind. Come and spend a few hours with Team RTO/ERO. Why? That’s the date of the next RELAY FOR LIFE. Too far away? Don’t forget that we only see each other a few times a year. And that’s also why at every general meeting and luncheon you will be able to join the team ($10.00 registration fee) or make a donation if you are inclined to do so or buy luminaries ($5.00 each). All the information about the night of the RELAY is included in the fundraiser envelope that you will receive upon registration. MANY THANKS! Cécile Archambault Behind the Scene... the Mailing Committee The Newsletter’s aim is to keep you, members, informed and connected. Committee Chairs write pertinent articles about the work of their committees and numerous members write about the activities and events they participate in our community. However, there is a small group of dedicated volunteers who work behind the scene. Their work is very necessary. Three times a year, under the guidance of Denise Massimiliano and Annette Blais-Laforge, they meet at the Marguerite Lougheed Community Centre to prepare the mailing. They sort the seventeen hundred labels which are then affixed to every newsletter. Once this task is done, all the newsletters are put in bins and brought to the post office. There, Denise Massimiliano and Diane Bradley fill out the necessary paperwork and within a day or two, the newsletter is delivered to your mailbox. Evelyn Baxter and her husband Morley have been doing this work for many, many years. Sadly, Evelyn passed away since the spring send-off. The group will miss her dearly at their future meetings. These photos are in recognition of the mailing committee’s valuable work.
