It is with much enthusiasm that I call upon your participation and support
to successfully bring to fruition certain RTO/ERO projects in which I strongly
and dearly believe. RTO/ERO’s mandate is to promote the activities and

At our December meeting, we will welcome any suggestions to enable us to

The inflation increase on our pension in 2008 will be 1.8%. If you retired in
June of 2007, your increase will be 0.09%.

C’est avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme que je viens solliciter votre participation
afin de mener à bonne fin certains projets qui me tiennent à cœur au niveau
de RTO/ERO. Le mandat de RTO/ERO est de promouvoir les activités et les
accomplissements de notre organisme. Il est important de faire connaître
à la communauté de Sudbury que les enseignantes et les enseignants à la
retraite sont bel et bien des citoyens concernés voulant contribuer au plus
grand bien de tous. C’est en utilisant une variété de ressources médiatiques et
en développant des liens étroits avec la communauté que nous parviendrons
à faire connaître les intérêts de nos membres et les succès du groupe. À
notre rencontre de décembre nous vous demanderons de partager avec nous
des façons de développer des liens avec la communauté. Notre évènement
principal demeure toujours celui de “Relais pour la vie,” activité organisée par la
Société canadienne du cancer. L’an dernier cinquante et un membres de notre
regroupement étaient de la partie et cette année nous espérons augmenter
le nombre de participants et nous comptons sur chacune et chacun de vous.
Soyez de la partie et inscrivez-vous lors du prochain déjeuner en décembre.
En janvier, nous bénéficierons d’une hausse. L’augmentation du taux d’inflation
est de 1,8%. Si tu as pris ta retraite en juin 2007, ton augmentation sera de
0,09%.
Étant donné que c’est notre dernière publication avant les fêtes, je désire au
nom de l’exécutif vous offrir nos meilleurs vœux de bonheur à l’occasion de
cette saison des fêtes qui approche. Que 2008 soit pour vous et les vôtres une

“Even a little gift may be vast with loving kindness.”
The Christmas season brings countless occasions to share joyful moments with friends and family.
Members of our committee will visit our colleagues residing in Long Term Care, Retirement Homes and
shut-ins. We will bring small gifts and RTO/ERO best wishes.
During our visits, we have been impressed by the care our aging colleagues receive in buildings which
are not only well maintained, but many of which have become elegant, tastefully decorated homes.
We know that many of you regularly visit family and friends; we encourage others to drop in and
become familiar with the caring environment available for the frail elderly. I would suggest you visit
Pioneer Manor with its extensive and impressive changes; Alzheimer Day Center which offers respite
for caregivers and activities for clients; beautifully situated St Joseph Villa and luxurious Red Oak
Retirement Home situated in downtown Sudbury.
Two RTO/ERO members mourn the death of loved ones. We offer our condolences; we know they find
comfort in the stories told and retold at family gatherings.

Congratulations have been sent to RTO/ERO member Rick Bartolucci for his re-election as MPP for the
Sudbury riding and his many years of service to the people of Sudbury.

Birthday cards to 175 colleagues enjoying 80+ years of living.
We look forward to hearing from you about members who need a show of support and others who
deserve our congratulations.

NORTH SHORE/MANITOULIN NEWSBEAT
More than 45 members enjoyed the scenic drive to Elliot Lake’s Laurentian Lodge on October 2nd
2007. Guest speakers, Don and Ria Brickett, gave an overview of the proposed electoral system and
answered the many questions. As usual updates were provided.
Four new members attended and received goodie bags. Sister Gaye White won the RTO/ERO
sweatshirt while Catharine McQuarrie won the glass RTO/ERO mug.

The monthly newsletter, Updater, is also available on the provincial website. It provides up-to-date

RETIRED WOMEN TEACHERS OF ONTARIO (RWTO)
Our September meeting was a celebration of the 35th
anniversary of the Sudbury branch of RWTO. Provincial
President Jean Axcell, a talented singer and musician
was present at this festivity. A quartet of our members,
Lorraine Blais, Louise Sutcliffe, Laurianne Valiquette, and
Lorraine Chartrand had created an amazing “cake” of cans
to mark this anniversary. We also had a real cake to enjoy.
We presented a cheque in the amount of $350 to the
Executive Director of the Inner City Home, Mary Ali, who
was our guest at the luncheon. Our members generously
donated $10 to commemorate each year of our existence
and to symbolize the community aspect of our meetings.
A lively discussion followed about programming for the
coming year. Many excellent and exciting ideas were
brought forward for consideration.
At this meeting four new members joined RWTO. We
welcome Dolores Doucet, Arlene Paganucci, Gloria
Packard and Mariette Poitras.
We are recruiting new members at this time and any
female teacher who has taught for any length of time
whether you retired officially or not is eligible to become
a member of RWTO. Please call any members of the
Executive for further information.
Our Christmas meeting will be held on Thursday
November 29 at the Howard Johnson Plaza on Brady St.
Besides entertainment, we will have a 50/50 draw, a sale
of baked goods and other activities. DO COME!

C’est ainsi que les enseignantes
et les enseignants à la retraite
de l’Unité 4 ont accueilli une des
leurs au dîner rencontre du
4 octobre 2007.
Quelle bénédiction en cette veille
de l’Action de grâces que de
compter parmi nous une grande
dame, membre de RTO/ERO
depuis 1973, qui célébrera
ses 100 ans le 19 mai 2008. Une bienvenue toute
spéciale à Fleurette Dault!
Chic, agile, fière, éloquente, et surtout pimpante, ne
sont que quelques caractéristiques qui la décrivaient
en ce grand jour. À la grande surprise de ses
collègues, c’est avec enthousiasme et humour qu’elle
s’est empressée de nous énoncer quelques mots.
«Enseigner, c’est agréable» résume bien son
témoignage et est sûrement l’expression sincère de
ses sentiments les plus profonds.
Bravo Fleurette pour avoir gardé allumée ta passion
pour la carrière d’enseignante. Tu es une source
d’inspiration!
Entourée de sa famille pour le repas, la présence de
Fleurette a continué d’émerveiller les gens dans la
salle. Des petites bribes d’information sur sa longue
vie animaient les bonnes jasettes aux différentes
tables :
l Fleurette est née à Massey le 19 mai 1908.
l Elle a complété 35 ans de service en enseignement.
l C’est à l’âge de 65 ans qu’elle a pris sa retraite.
l Elle a beaucoup voyagé : Israël, Australie,
Europe, Haïti…
Elle partage de sages paroles :
«Les plus vieux cèdent aux plus jeunes. Je cède et
cède encore.»
«Mes petits enfants sont ma récompense.»
«À mon âge, on doit vivre dans le passé. Les images
filent devant moi et m’impressionnent encore.»

Il va sans dire que Fleurette a trouvé le secret tant
recherché… elle sait ajouter des années à la vie et de
la vie aux années!
Comme il fait bon célébrer ta 100e année sur Terre!

To these lyrics, the retired teachers of
district 4 welcomed a very special lady
at the fall luncheon, held on October 4th
2007.
Feelings of gratitude for life’s blessings
were felt as the oldest member, Fleurette
Dault, entered the room with all the pride
of her 99 years of age.
Fleurette will be celebrating her 100th
birthday on May 19th, 2008.
Elegant, alert, eloquent and witty are but a
few adjectives used to describe her on that
special day. To everyone’s surprise, Fleurette
demonstrated enthusiasm and eagerness in
wanting to address the crowd. While conveying
her message, she was smart, humorous and
entertaining. Yet, her obvious passion for her
teaching career came across very clearly. She’s an
inspiration to us all!
Surrounded by her family, Fleurette was most
definitely enjoying her lunch, while bits and
pieces of her life continued to be an interesting
topic of conversation at various tables:
l Fleurette was born on May 19th, 1908.
l She taught for 35 years and retired at the age of 65.
l She traveled to Europe, Israel, Australia, Haiti…
She shares some of her words of wisdom:
“My grandchildren are my reward.”
“At my age, we often live in the past. The
images which flow across my mind impress me
still.”
Fleurette has obviously found the recipe to the
well hidden secret… she knows how to add years
to her life, but more importantly, life to her years!
How delightful to celebrate her 100th year on
Earth!

She’s a happy, happy camper
When she’s paddling her canoe
September reminds us that retirement gives
us endless opportunities to follow any path
which calls.
For nine years, RTO/ERO colleagues Kay
Gilchrist, Anne Parmelee, Kari Hodge, and
I have joined friends Nancy Rogers, Sue
Zorbas, Debbi Sutton and Pat Switzer to
spend 10 days canoeing and portaging
through scenic waterway parks.
Each September, we enjoy the colourful
foliage, as we each lug well fitted 50 lb
packs filled with clothing, tent, sleeping
bag, stove, water purifier, first aid kit,
rain gear, toiletries, and dried and fresh
food. Happily, after each 4 to 6 hr day of
paddling, portaging and tenting packs are
lightened. As a well earned treat, we have
a two night stopover at a scenic site where
we enjoy a gourmet meal, quiet days of
exploring, and still evenings sitting around
the campfire singing refrains which hold
such memories of friendship. So many
forests hold the echo of our voices in
Killarney, Algonquin, Quetico, Temagami, La
Verendrye (Que).
Each park offers a unique experience. Kilarney, our local gem, guides us with well marked portage
trails, clean campsites with the comfort of the ‘forest box’. Nellie Lake is renowned worldwide to
canoeists as the clearest lake in North America.
Algonquin boasts an old, unused railway line; we meander, paddling under the many curved trestles.
To reach Quetico, west of Thunder Bay, requires a 12 hr drive. We do not regret the long hours in a car,
as we paddle and portage through the rugged country. Here, we are surrounded by huge evergreens,
large black rocks with their surprising timeless pictographs. Our evening songs fill the night and soon
the howls of wolves add to the melody.
We do encounter other canoeists on our treks; one young Quebecois gave us a map and encouraged
us to tour his favorite provincial park, La Verendrye. A spectacular autumn drive through the lush farm
country brought us to picturesque, rugged landscapes and demanding portages which lead us to more
awesome pictographs.
This September, we ventured to Temagami to paddle the largest water, buffeted by strong winds. A
topographical map was essential to stay on course in this heavily populated area.
We are planning our September 2008 venture; two of our adventurers celebrated their 70th birthdays
and are raring to paddle and portage many more kilometers.

Compte-rendu du voyage aux Maritimes et aux Îles de la
Madeleine (été 2007)
Quels beaux coins de notre pays que sont les Maritimes et les Îles de la Madeleine.
Aux Maritimes, le groupe accompagné de Jean-Yves, guide du Groupe Voyages Québec visite plusieurs
sites nommés «Patrimoine historique national» tels le Village historique Acadien, le Parlement et la
Salle des Fondateurs de Charlottetown, lieux de rencontre des Pères de la Confédération, Louisbourg
et Port Royal. Les chicaneuses d’Antoine Maillet, au pays de la Sagouine, démontrent au groupe
l’authentique joie de vivre acadienne. La visite de la «maison aux pignons verts» ajoute une touche
légère au voyage. Le musée Alexander Graham Bell fut éducatif et très intéressant. Les voyageurs sont
émerveillés par le panorama grandiose de la célèbre «Cabot Trail». Comment oublier les paysages de
Peggy’s Cove et de Lunenburg ainsi que le Pont de la Confédération, une merveille du génie moderne.
Aux Îles de la Madeleine, le groupe est ensuite plongé dans un monde où les habitants vivent à un
rythme ralenti. Les Madelinots, gens chaleureux, accueillants et solidaires divertissent les voyageurs par
leur sens d’humour unique. Les églises St. Pierre de la Vernière et Notre Dame du Rosaire de Fatima, le
Fumoir d’Antan et le Centre d’interprétation s’avèrent des monuments historiques à ne pas oublier. Ces
visites ont permis aux voyageurs de jeter un coup d’œil sur la vie incomparable de ces insulaires.
Tout au long du voyage, le groupe a pu à volonté déguster des délices de poisson et de fruits de mer.
Ce voyage inoubliable fut nul doute un coup d’œil sur un coin du Paradis terrestre.
