Douar Abiad: in the heart of the palm tree region with the Atlas range in the background, the small dirt road raises a lot of dust under the baleful eye of some camels. Behind the high anonymous walls, the entry into Dar Sabra already makes for a cultural exception. A vegetal bull by Richard Di Rosa, sculptures by A Sun Wu, Guy de Rougemont, an installation of concrete parallelepipeds by Michael Warren, a facetious monkey by Mark Brusse all welcome the traveller between a well manicured lawn and the agave garden. Multicolored letters by the Argentine Leopoldo Maler bump together in a sign: Dar Sabra, the home of the agave in O.L. So many monumental works setting the tone for one of the most beautiful hotels in the world. 132 artravel A great traveller, modern art lover and collector and perfect host, he instilled the unique charm of the rare mansions where one feels at home, here, into this mineral, vegetal and aquatic world peopled with artwork, which is never ostentatious but always expresses sincere refined conviviality. Francois Chapoutot the esthete decided to abandon the stressful Parisian world to live in an ideal environment linking Zen and comfort surrounded by his African treasures, coins, swords, shields, furniture, antiques, vintage or design, and to share them with his visitors, these museum installations under the open sky, supported by the art critic Gerard Xurigera. In the beginning he had a first villa built by the Mexican architect and decided to open it to others. The hotel was born, a solitary retreat of seven suites of different identities, (Indian, Moroccan, Afghan, Asian, Art deco), around pools, gardens, a patio with seven steles by Satoru Sato. 134 artravel This second opus was by the architectural firm AW² with Reda Amalou and Stephanie Ledoux who harmoniously integrated their design with the existing graphic lines so that the guests become more than spectators, but actors and participants, especially in constant contact witht the exterior, in a modern approach that also refers to the past, traditional Moroccan heritage. So the outside walls are made of colored concrete, Marrakech pink, the inside walls covered in ivory tadelak, with huge green steel lamps reinterpreting ancient calligraphy, and with the intentionally narrow staircases keeping shade and cool air. AW² was able to capture the very pure Moroccan light and wind and remain in direct contact with nature. And the artwork is omnipresent. The XXL ceramics by Erro are displayed all over, from the restaurant to the patios. Rooted forever in the gardens, a gorilla by Rodrigo Solorzano sits next to a pyramid by Mark Brusse, a Cyclops by Di Rosa, a polychromatic stele by Carlos Cruz Diez, a totem by Peter Stampfli. From the terrace to the lounge the view on the large pool, the pure arch by Mauro Staccioli and in the back the 30 m wide graphic by Seen represents an eternal and visionary artistic challenge. artravel 135
