A Festival? What’s the point?
To put things into perspective at a time when culture appears depending on the day and speeches – either as a life-saving element (cf. Matteo Renzi, president of the Italian Council of Ministers’
speech last November), or as less than a priority, even for some,
as a very secondary issue.
A festival, is first and foremost a place to meet others.
To speak, listen and share, with people of all social backgrounds,
nationalities, between citizens of the world, men and women, children and their parents, between friends, between creators,
between journalists and readers, listeners, viewers, Internet users...
In short, to "live together" (for those whom this quote irritates, listening to the song “Les loups sont entrés dans Paris” - The wolves
have entered Paris, sung and popularized by Serge Reggiani,
can be helpful).
A festival serves to promote the freedom of artists.
Those who are at the origin of all creation and without whom there
would be no themes, stories, lighting or events. Artists. Ok, but which
ones? All those who have talent? That would be ideal. But talent is
not attained, by definition, and many are those who have it.
Therefore, during the past four decades, the Angoulême Festival
has offered its own selective subjectivity. There are easy choices
to make such as being interested in geniuses - those who are often
founders of their art. There are other more obvious ones, but
already more difficult to implement, such as finding new talents
to help and provide assistance to (for instance, in offering them
to compete in the festival).
Finally, there are choices that are impossible to make, such as presenting all the creative profusion represented by comics throughout
the world. So, current affairs, universality, our feelings, sensibilities
and enthusiasm prevails. And finally, a sort of logic appears, inherent to the still very personal perception of one’s confrontation to
all forms of artistic creation.
Courteous, lively, passionate and even violent debates ensue. History
teaches us that they are inherent to such events and help move the
cause forward. Comics, in this case. And only time can finally allow
us to assess the scope of an event such as the International Comics
Festival, in order to tell when it made the right or wrong choices and
ultimately, what its contribution to the world of comics is.
A festival helps out a profession
Bringing together all (or most) actors of an economic sphere and
involving the public and media, generates a dynamic that opens
up new possibilities. The events’ convivial atmosphere allows for
meetings and exchanges to take place within a more informal
framework, suitable to strengthen links and to generate ideas and
possibilities. It also increases the interest of journalists for information on the relevant field – in this case, comics. It also measures
the enthusiasm of consumers (since cultural products do exist!) and
helps to learn how to listen to them. It generates the involvement
of public authorities and companies from other fields of activity
that, as partners, in turn, contribute to the promotion of the concerned sector.
So it is actually the whole ecosystem of comics that gathers in
Angoulême each year, in order to interact. Leaders and outsiders,
major publishing groups and handmade fanzines, known and
unknown authors, digital and media companies, French and foreign cultural actors, autograph hunters and young readers, general
and specialized journalists... Each one of these participants interacts with the other, depending on his or her own interests which
eventually end up joining those of the world of comics.
A festival helps a territory
A national territory: France. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and
International Development was perfectly aware when it awarded
the Angouleme Festival with the “Grand Tour” label, a label specifically created in order to highlight French cultural events for foreign
tourists. Many authors from different continents have honoured the
Festival by coming to receive awards from its prize list and in such,
affirming their recognition to our country for its openness to world
cultures and in this case, to all forms of comics. In having agreed
to be present at the Festival this January, Katsuhiro Otomo has also
expressed his recognition.
A regional territory: Aquitaine, soon to be France’s largest region,
where Angoulême will be equally rewarded thanks to the adjoining creative economy of, following the Festival’s international reputation. Its Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image
(International Center for comics and image), its well reputed animation schools, its specialized companies… all will constitute as
many assets in order to successfully help anchor and contribute to
the shaping of its future.
For all of us, and especially for youth, festivals are major attractions. The fact that they are so numerous in our country is a sign
that should be interpreted as extremely positive, and a conveyor
of hope and desires. Beyond all their imperfections and weaknesses, their amplitude has a meaning.
In creating the Angoulême Festival forty-three years ago, it is not
clear whether or not its founders and the FIBD Association had
thought of all this. But one thing is certain: they had a desire, that
of sharing their passion for comics, and this desire furiously resembled a need to live together.

Laurent Fabius, The French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, has entrusted
Mr Olivier Poivre d'Arvor with a mission to enhance France’s cultural attractiveness. The latter has
chosen to do so by organizing the GRAND TOUR, an ambitious cultural agenda of about thirty
events taking place in France between January and July of 2016. France remains the most visited
country in the world thanks to the amazing touristic wealth of its territories, the incomparable wealth
of its cultural offerings - over 1200 museums, 1500 festivals, 14100 monuments, 41 UNESCO
world heritage sites… - and also thanks to its ability to welcome foreign cultures. France is thus the
largest library in the world because it translates all foreign literature and opinions, the largest movie
theater, the largest art gallery, the largest performance hall and the largest land of festivals, not to
mention the 300 000 foreign students who make France the third biggest international university
destination. To reveal and illustrate France’s cultural attractiveness, to value and energize it, that is
the purpose of the GRAND TOUR. The Ministry’s network of operators are taking ownership of this
label as an element of appreciation of their activities in France and abroad. France’s most important
festivals have also agreed to become its partners and register as one of the many stops on the
Grand Tour agenda that will boost the attractiveness of their territories. A “France, made in Culture”
forum is scheduled in Paris on March 9th, with all the concerned cultural, political and economic
players, in order to deliver a first set of recommendations towards the implementation of structural
elements for cultural attractiveness at the service of the economic, territorial and touristic development
of France.

The international comics festival, in partnership with the Cité internationale de la
bande dessinée et de l’image and Lucky Comics, will be dedicating an exceptional
exhibition to Lucky Luke, who will be celebrating his 70th birthday in 2016.
One of Hergé’s greatest admirers, trained in the mid1940s by Jijé alongside Franquin, Morris quickly
emerged as one of his generation’s most talented illustrators. Constantly seeking to represent the right movement, to purify his stroke in order to gain in clarity and
dynamism, he turned Lucky Luke into the famous phlegmatic, flawless and fearless hero that several generations of readers got to know so well. Living in the US
for several years, Morris spent time with the authors of
Mad, inspiring him to give his stories a more overtly
parodic dimension. Parody which was reinforced in
the mid-1950s by René Goscinny’s collaboration, who
signed the series’ scenarios for over twenty years – that
is to say 35 albums written by the French author.
Together, Morris and Goscinny intertwined historical
events with sinister villains and created unforgettable
characters: Jolly Jumper, the hero’s faithful horse,
Rantanplan the dumbest police dog west of the Pecos,
plus four brothers as cruel as they are stupid - Joe, Jack,
William and Averell Dalton - which remain, to the
reader’s delight, Lucky Luke’s eternal enemies.
This exhibition is a rare opportunity for comic book
enthusiasts as well as the general public to discover
more than 150 original plates and drawings by Morris. Never before exposed for the most part, these rare
documents highlight the author’s extraordinary talent
and reveal his very special aesthetic. The exhibition’s
curators have selected these original documents from
thousands of plates drawn by Morris and preserved
in Brussels by the author's family in order to highlight
both the stylistic evolution and virtuosity of Lucky Luke’s
creator. It is an exceptional collection, a treasure of
comics which visitors are invited to discover. The exhibition is accompanied by a critical commentary of
Morris’ work and aesthetic, revealing the many facets
of his art through the presentation of rare journals,
sketches and manuscripts from either The Museum of
Comics’ collection or from private loans. Posters, pictures and figurines will also be presented, as well as
interviews of Morris from the Institut national de l’audiovisuel’s collection (National audiovisual institute).
The exhibition is designed to address as many people
as possible, adult visitors as well as younger ones and
schools. Educational materials as well as tailor-made
recreational and educational activities will be offered
on site. One way to remember that, nearly seventy
years after his birth, Lucky Luke remains a trans-generational hero - one of the most famous in the history of
comics. A monograph entitled L’Art de Morris (The Art
of Morris), one of the first ever devoted to the author,
will be published by Lucky Comics in December 2015
on the occasion of this exhibition.

The Art of Morris exhibition offers to look back on the
creator of one of francophone comics’ most famous
heroes, the Belgian Maurice De Bevere (1923-2001).
Choosing the pen name “Morris” at the start of his
career, he created on his own, at the age of 22, the
singing cowboy on a white horse largely inspired by
westerns, American cartoons and Hergé’s Tintin. Lucky
Luke, “the man who shoots faster than his shadow,”
appeared in the Spirou newspaper’s annual almanac
at the end of 1946, a hero that Morris never ceased
drawing until his death. He was therefore a man of a
single work, but a creation as rich as it was popular:
Morris drew no less than seventy albums of the adventures of Lucky Luke, 300 million books have been sold
and the stories of the lone cowboy have been translated into 29 languages.
LASTMAN: UNIVERSE Exhibition

The Lastman series which was awarded the Best Series Prize during last year’s
Festival, will be honoured in this year’s Young Readers’ Zone. Let’s take a look back
at this cross-media project of a new kind, which opened the borders of comics.
series’ different formats – indeed this series was originally created as a cross-media project combining
comics, animation and video games.
The Lastman: Universe exhibition is therefore intended
to be fun and innovative whilst addressing a large
audience. Upon entry into the Young Readers’ Zone,
visitors will fully submerse themselves, going from surprise to surprise, starting with the discovery of the characters to a total immersion into Iguana Bay, plus two
exclusive features that will delight fans of the series as
much as uninitiated visitors: the Lastfight video game
which is still under development and that will be previewed on the occasion of the exhibition with two
playable arcade machines, as well as the screening
of the unreleased pilot for the Lastman TV series – an
animated adaptation of the manga, also still under
development and which will be broadcast on the
France 4 channel in 2016. Many surprises and unreleased content are therefore scheduled during this
exhibition unlike any other, which will display all of
Lastman’s facets to visitors, a dense, lively and hybrid
series that has found a loyal audience and is sure to
seduce those which have not yet discovered it.

Launched in the spring of 2013, the Lastman series
quickly established itself in bookstores thanks to its
instantly recognizable graphic design and the originality of its approach. This dynamic shônen of many
influences was created by three young French authors,
Bastien Vives (Revelation Award in 2009 with Le Goût
du chlore), Balak and Mickaël Sanlaville. Together,
they tell the story of a young boy in combat training,
Adrian Velba, who is following in the footsteps of a
mentor with a troubled past, the fighter, Richard
Aldana. Inspired both by the codes and production
methods of manga (long spoken fighting scenes, studio work, division of labour, regular publication of
200 page volumes) and the television series principle
(the first six volumes of Lastman make up the first season of the TV series), this ambitious global manga will
have an exhibition devoted to itself for the first time.
However, we are not talking about a classic comics
exhibition since the authors work exclusively with
graphic tablets and no originals of the published
pages exist. Instead, Lastman: Universe will invite the
public to immerse itself into the different places and
worlds visited by the characters (the Valley of the
Kings, Paxton, Iguana Bay...) and to discover the
Lastman, Delitoon and the webtoon
Lastman was born on Delitoon and the adventure continues with the exclusive distribution of the 8th season
(book 8) in full color. Delitoon, which offers the reading of the series as a webtoon, has already collected over
500,000 readings for Lastman! The webtoon, a new format that comes from Asia (South Korea) is a new and
different genre, built for the Internet, which enables a smooth reading experience of comics on all types of
connected screens. The Lastman exhibition, gives visitors the opportunity to (re)discover the series, aired in its

HUGO PRATT Exhibition

Twenty years have passed since the author who is
most known for introducing literature into a work of
comics, left us. This influence backed by a plentiful
appetite for reading and books (did he not have
30000 books of all kinds at home?) was often noticeable in his work through the identity of his characters
and, even sometimes by very direct referrals: how
often does Corto not have a book in his hands or
state a literary quote that illuminates his life choices?
At a time when the Maltese sailor is being resurrected
in order to take on new adventures, it seems, more
than ever, interesting to look back at the origins of this
unforgettable creator who knew how to speak so
clearly about his influences: “In literature (...), what
touches me most is poetry, because it is synthetic and
conveys itself through images. And like poetry, comics
is a world of images in which you are constantly
obliged to combine two codes and therefore these
two worlds. An immediate universe through the image
and a world transmitted through speech.”
The exhibition presented by the 43rd International
Comics Festival and created by the Hergé Museum
(currently being shown in Louvain la-Neuve), in
alliance with Patrizia Zanotti, specifically emphasizes
this important theme from the Venetian genius’ work.
Festivalgoers are invited to an overview of Hugo Pratt’s
universe where they can discover how the Italian
author shaped his work through a constant contact
with numerous forms of literature. Pratt’s influences, his

aesthetic concerns, but also the decisive encounters
he made during a career that spans over almost 50
years, are presented in relation to the original works:
Research sketches, black and white and color plates,
watercolors, magazine covers... Exceptional creations, among which can be found Hugo Pratt’s most
famous plates and drawings. This unprecedented literary approach also brings forth the fact that Pratt’s
personal life and work were intimately linked, continually interacting with each other in order to produce
his ultimate masterpiece, Corto Maltese. A character
who is both solitary and connected to the world and
notably so by the interest he feels for universal works
of literature that perfectly reflect his cosmopolitan personality, creative curiosity and the constant temptation
he feels for travel. Like Corto, Pratt ignored borders
and obscurantism. He was passionate about different
cultures without distinction or hierarchy, mixing the
imaginary world of his drawings and texts to terrestrial
adventures, reveries escaping any topography or
Cartesian logic to become... fables.
Pratt’s words, taken from books and interviews published at various times, form the texts of the exhibitions,
reflecting all of this. When the author summons all of
his influences in a jumble: Kipling, Stevenson, Yeats,
London, Rimbaud, Borges or even Shakespeare, these
are the sources that are found in this work inundated
by culture and light.

JEAN-CHRISTOPHE MENU Exhibition

In 2016, the Angouleme Festival will be paying tribute to one of France’s major
alternative comic book authors. For over 30 years, Jean-Christophe Menu has been
working in the margins of the world of comics by simultaneously leading the life of
an author, editor and critic, and by digging paths that meet and come together.
For JC Menu, the work of a publisher goes hand in
hand with the theoretical reflection on both the genre
and editorial landscape of comics: founder in 1992
of the OuBaPo (The workroom for potential comics)
in the continuity of Oulipo, his literary alter ego, he
published a short critical book in 2005 entitled Platesbandes, followed by three issues of L’Éprouvette a journal which included studies and interviews, from 2006
to 2007. In 2011, he presented and published his
doctoral thesis, entitled La bande dessinée et son dou-
ble (Comics and its double). In 1995, Menu joined
the emerging graphic trend of autobiographies by
publishing Livret de phamille followed by works of
fiction, dreams or experimental comics (Le Livre du
Mont-Vérité, Gnognottes, La Topographie interne du
M, etc). In 2001, he journeyed into the mainstream
by drawing one of the albums from the Donjon series
for Trondheim & Sfar. In 2011, he left L’Association,
founding a new publishing house the following year,
L’Apocalypse, where he continues to publish books
that are singular both in form and content, including
his own Métamune Comix, where he attempts to synthesize all of his past themes. In 2014 he joined Fluide
Glacial, where he will be publishing Chroquettes in
early 2016 in parallel to Krollebitches, a new essay
published by Impressions Nouvelles.
The exhibition at Angouleme’s Hôtel Saint-Simon is
designed as both a tribute and a carte blanche for
JC Menu, who will be curating this presentation of
his many works as author, editor and privileged
observer of comics. Menu has always been attentive
to signs and symbols, and his creations, which cleverly mix illustration and handwritten texts, restore the
vibrations of a fully accepted autobiographical reflection. In this exhibition, visitors will discover the multiple
symbols which populate the author’s graphic universe:
the enigmatic and caring moon and stars, emanata
and krollebitches (signs for emotions in comics), but
also the catchy loops of a locked groove, the musical
motif engraved at the end of some vinyl records, a
reminder of the repetitions and obsessions found in
Jean-Christophe Menu’s work.

Born in 1964, Menu made his debut publishing the
Le Lynx (à tifs) and Le Journal de Lapot fanzines from
1982 to 1986. He went on collaborating with various publications such as Psikopat, the satirical newspaper where he developed the Meder character (a
book was published by Futuropolis in 1988). In
1990, with six other cartoonists (Lewis Trondheim,
Killoffer, Stanislas, Mattt Konture, David B. and
Mokeït) he created an innovative publishing house:
L’Association. A future symbol of independent publishing during the 1990s and 2000s; “L'Asso”
appeared both as an editorial and artistic movement
and as a tangible response to the difficulty for young
writers (who were eager to put into question the traditions of comics) to find a publishing house. Throughout the years, in addition to the work of its founders,
L’Association published many important authors, such
as Dupuy & Berberian, Julie Doucet, Emmanuel Guibert, Marjane Satrapi, Tardi, Riad Sattouf, Goossens,
Edmond Baudoin, as well as Gébé, Jean-Claude Forest, Charlie Schlingo, several former contributors of
Bazooka, Chris Ware, Jim Woodring or the South
Africans of Bitterkomix.

INTERDUCK – DUCKOMENTA® Exhibition

Their names are Eckhart Bauer, Anke Doepner, Rüdiger Stanko, Volker Schönwart… Since the mid-eighties, this German collective named interDuck has been
revisiting
International art masterpieces by staging ducks in the
place of their original characters. A project initiated
by Eckhart Bauer, professor at the Brunswick Graduate
School of Fine Arts, as well as some students who also
wished to mix comics and classical art, or in other
words, to mix the “legitimate” culture with popular culture. A compulsive collector of Disney merchandise,
Bauer gave a decisive impetus to this spontaneous creative movement that revisits hundreds of works of art
and images through painting, drawing, sculpture and
photography. Nothing stops interDuck, which take on
treasures of Egyptian art, Romulus and Remus, Bosch,
the Mona Lisa, Vermeer, Pop Art, the American
“I Want You” propaganda posters or the picture of
Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the lunar surface with
equal jubilation. Close to 100 works from the collective will be displayed in the museum’s temporary exhibition room as well as fifteen works that will be
scattered throughout the permanent exhibition rooms which the visitors shall enjoy finding. This exhibition,
will be extended by the publication of the catalog of
the collective’s full works in early 2016, intelligently
mixing humor and art history, allowing visitors of all
ages to discover major works of art.

Rare are the authors who have left their mark and
influenced their peers of all ages, countries and cultures as much as Katsuhiro Otomo. And it’s to say the
least, that the prospect of paying homage to the
Japanese master generated the collective enthusiasm
of authors contacted by the Glénat gallery a few
months ago in order to participate in the show.

How do Japanese publishers and authors produce their manga, a form of comics
that has conquered the world? This exhibition produced in collaboration with the
Shogakukan publishing house, strives to reveal a piece of the puzzle with the
example of one of its monthly magazines, HiBaNa.
It is a magazine published by Shogakukan (one of

agreed to collaborate with the Festival on this unique
experience: HiBaNa (literally “The Spark”), a
monthly magazine, launched in the spring of 2015
for young Japanese adults, mostly students. Positioned on a rather “artistic” approach of manga,
primarily intended for a female audience - two thirds
of the readership - HiBaNa (heir to the recently disappeared Ikki magazine which was long considered
to be one of the jewels of “art” comics in Japan) welcomes about twenty stories per issue, making up the
five hundred to six hundred pages of the monthly
comics magazine. The characters and the emotional
intensity of their adventures, all universes combined,
are at the heart of this periodical publishing project.
The positioning of the stories, support of the authors
and their creations, cover design, promotional campaigns, distribution, reader interaction... all the
aspects of the Japanese publisher’s organization of
one of its comics magazines will be addressed in
this exhibition. In a simple manner, both clear and
invigorating, the exhibition will strive to make these
specific Japanese working methods tangible and
therefore better highlight the particularities of manga.
In echo to this interdisciplinary presentation, Ayako
Noda, one of HiBaNa’s authors will make the trip
to Angouleme for the occasion, offering festivalgoers
a talk centered on the relationship between authors
and magazines.

For the first time ever, the annual spotlight offered by
the Angoulême Festival on Japanese comics and on
those who make it exist, is not focused on a particular artist, but on one of its numerous periodicals,
which each week or month, offers its readers over
hundreds of never-before published pages of
manga. The expression of a publishing phenomenon
that is probably unique in the world and which
deserves the attention of an educational and enlightening exhibition open to all.

A happy coincidence, it is precisely the year when
the Japanese mangaka Otomo Katsuhiro (recently
crowned by the Festival’s Grand Prix) is honoring the
Festival with his presence, that Li Chi Tak is also coming to Angouleme in order to witness the first ever
monographic exhibition to be devoted to an artist
from Hong Kong. For if we may credit a single artist
for having a decisive influence on the tastes and
choices of Li, it is precisely Akira’s author who did.
But at the end of the day, do coincidences, especially happy ones, really exist in the world of
comics?

show-making was never absent. Also inspired by the
genre and action movies that made the heyday of
Hong Kong’s film and television industry in the 70s,
Li Chi Tak, whose local publishers quickly detected
his graphic virtuosity, multiplied his publications over
the years, either in albums or in periodic comics
magazines - including in Japan where he collaborated with the Young and Ikki manga magazines.
He also never disdained to indulge in illustration, as
evidenced by his numerous publications in Hong
Kong newspapers and magazines.
In any case, when the young Chinese illustrator

The Festival will strive to make a fitting tribute to this
prolific career, through a monographic retrospective
of about 80 works from the 80s to this day. In parallel to the exhibition, Li will also participate in the
Festival’s International Conferences.

Born from author and director Marietta Ren’s interest
for neurobiology, Phallaina is a comics project without panels, developed for a digital reading experience, based on a “hybrid narrative”. The reader
follows the story of Audrey, a young epileptic
woman with a physeter in her brain, a rare disorder
that causes her to have hallucinatory outbreaks during which she sees whales. The story also portrays
the character of Chloe, a young researcher dedicated to the study of the physeter.
Phallaina notably aims to explain to the reader how
neurobiological research works: how researchers
study and think about their discipline and how they
interact with their patients - this notion of interaction
is capital and greatly depends on the trust that exists
between patients and neurobiologists, as highlighted
by the author. In Angoulême, the exhibition will
unfold itself on a 115 meter long outdoor fresco,
stretched out with ropes between the trees of the
Desaix rampart. Overlooking a panoramic view of
the Charente, the exhibition will be enriched by a
sound environment that will foster the viewer’s total
immersion into the work throughout his or her experience. Developed in 2015 and presented for the
first time at the Festival, Phallaina is a fascinating and
innovative project that allows the reader and visitor
to participate in a new reading experience.

Because Katsuhiro Otomo’s presence will be the main
event of this year’s Festival, it makes sense that his work
be central to this year’s edition of the famous Comics
Concerts®. And to celebrate the 11th anniversary of
the creation of this concept by the Festival, what better
way to do it than to pay homage to one of comics’
greatest living masters? Like every year, the various
international authors who have agreed to draw on
stage will do so based on an original story. The performances will take place on Thursday, Friday and
Sunday. This year’s story was written by Bastien Vives,
winner of the 2015 Fauve Award for the best series
with Lastman, which is precisely inspired by the world
of manga and Alfred, winner of the 2014 Gold Fauve
Award for best album with Come Prima. As for the
inevitable Areski, long-time accomplice of the Comics
Concerts®, he will be faithful to his post again, composing and interpreting original music on stage with
his musicians, inspired by the Akira soundtrack, a
movie adaptated from Otomo’s cult series.

L’ALPHA a new space
for meetings and exhibitions
L'Alpha – Médiathèque de GrandAngoulême, 1 rue Coulomb.
A new major site for festivalgoers, l’Alpha,
created in partnership with the GrandAngoulême, testifies of the Festival’s
dynamism that keeps developing throughout the years.
Named l’Alpha, the new media center created thanks
to The GrandAngoulême region, will have just been
freshly inaugurated when it will host a part of the International Comics Festival for the very first time. Dedicated
to the pleasures of reading, especially comics (it is
Angoulême after all!), it will be offering a series of events
related to the program of the Festival’s 43rd edition.
Logically, the Alpha has become the perfect place to
accommodate the Festival’s “ideal library”. Patiently
developed by the Fauve, in collaboration with the Alpha
and Festival teams, this selection of major works will
give readers a chance to delve into the past and present of comics. Far from being complete, it bases itself
on the Festival’s award-winning titles, as well as a more
global vision based on the constantly changing relationship, between comics and our surrounding world.
The presentation of these “ideal libraries” (different
themes will be on offer) will be accompanied by a
series of talks on literature & comics. A statement of the
ever growing respect of comics in today’s cultural
domain, as well as among parents and teachers who
increasingly recognize its pedagogical virtues for new
readers in training.
Starting with this year’s Festival, l’Alpha is already asserting itself as a must for festivalgoers. And beyond this is
the foreshadow of future developments on the Festival’s
perimeter (that will accompany the changes of the city
of Angoulême's territory). Transformations linked to other
major changes as well, such as the advent of the
greater region, or the construction of the high-speed
train link for a delivery in 2017, in which the city of
Angoulême will play its part.

In addition to this “ideal library”, festivalgoers will get
to discover an exhibition entitled #je dessine, created
in partnership with Charlie Hebdo, SOS Racisme and
the FIDL. Thousands of drawings were received after
the tragic events of January 2015. A selection of these
drawings will echo the recent tragic events, and serve
as a support in order to educate visitors, particularly the
younger ones, to a series of key themes such as racism,
tolerance and freedom of expression. Lectures, debates
and workshops will also be organised in order to go
deeper into these topics and generate exchanges.

Undoubtedly one of the Asia Zone’s major events
this year: the legendary motorcycle ridden by
Kaneda through the neon streets of Tokyo in Akira is
coming alive, to every festivalgoers’ delight; Iconic
thanks to Akira, the masterpiece of Katsuhiro Otomo,
Grand Prix winner and guest of honor at this year’s
Festival.
A unique model, made in Japan by admirers of
Otomo and his universe, this authentic motorcycle
has made a very special trip from Fukuoka on the
Japanese island of Kyushu. Presented at the heart of
the Asia Zone, it will be accessible for “Photo Calls”
with festivalgoers who wish to capture themselves
and the motorcycle, wearing Kaneda’s legendary
jacket which Katsuhiro Otomo will personally be
lending the festival. The pictures will be available on
site and on the Fauve’s social networks. The Festival
team will choose the best pictures that will be
rewarded with the full set of Akira books, generously
offered by Glénat. Deeply moved by the tragic
events that hit France last November 13th, Katsuhiro
Otomo has also wished that this festive meeting point
around Akira’s motorcycle also be an opportunity to
be solidary with victims of the Paris bombings and
their families. All the profits made from this “Akira
Photo Call”, will therefore be donated to charity.

Each occupying one of Asia Zone’s wings, two new
exhibitions are offered to festivalgoers curious of new
Asian creations. One is of Japanese inspiration and
is dedicated to the discovery of a monthly manga
magazine from Tokyo called: HiBaNa (“The Spark”in
English). Organised in collaboration with its publisher,
Shogakukan, the exhibition aims to explain how
Japanese authors and publishing professionals go
about publishing comics with the presentation of about
sixty documents, pages, posters, covers and explanatory panels, highlighting the particularities and the
advantages of this form of creation so popular with
Western readers.
The other unprecedented exhibition proposed by the
Festival within the Asia Zone is a monographic work
devoted to one of Hong Kong’s most respected
authors, independent cartoonist Li Chi Tak, on the
occasion of the publication of his new work The Beast
by Kana, fruit of his first collaboration with a Western
writer, the Belgian Jean Dufaux. Designed as a
chronological journey of a career spanning over three
decades, the exhibition is also an opportunity of discovering, through 80 documents, a virtuoso of the art
of drawing who never stopped creating new fantasy
universes.

than six authors are making the special trip to the festival, all first-time participants. Two of them are
already residents at the Maison des Auteurs, where
they have settled down in recent weeks: Ao Yu-xiang
considered to be Taiwan’s undisputed comics master,
started keeping an illustrated diary for the occasion
and Mickeyman, who is more focused on digital
media, is working on a piece that is halfway
between cartoons and auto fiction.
The four others, two men and two women will be
presenting their work: Yeh Ming-hsiung, winner of a
Gold Comic Award in Taiwan this year, who has
devoted his most recent work to Grand Master Li Bai
a poet from the Tang Dynasty; Hambuck, who has
recently been translated into Russian and who is
notably known for revisiting Lewis Carroll’s Alice character; Yi Huan who has been Taiwan’s main girlcomics author for the past twenty years; and finally,
Crystal Kung, a 20 year old university student who
divides her time between illustration, comics and animation work.

As the 2015-2016 France-Korea year celebrates
130 years of relations between the two countries,
Korean comics professionals are once again honoring the Angoulême Festival with their presence
through a series of talks and events in which
webtoons will have a predominant role. The Asia
Zone welcomes them, with a dedicated stand and
a rich program of events.
A LIBRARY DEDICATED TO ASIA, WITH CULTURA
Finally, in order to extend the festivalgoers’ discovery of works by Asian authors, Cultura,
in partnership with the Festival, will offer a reading space exclusively dedicated to
Japanese mangas, Chinese manhuas and Korean manhwas in the Asia Zone.

ENTERTAINMENT
In counterpoint to the stands and exhibitions, The Asia Zone will also host a nonstop entertainment forum during the entire
Festival, in partnership with the J-One
and Game-One channels.
It will house a rich agenda, alternating

It has been a good ten years now, that the world of
Korean comics, its authors and editors opened up
the path to webtoons, these illustrated stories,
designed to be read and followed directly on the
Internet without ever passing through a printed version. Today, this efficient, popular and unusual format
that is still poorly known in Europe has become a reference in Asia. The webtoon serves as a template
and test bed for the entire Korean and Chinese creative industries. Indeed, webtoons are then often

WORKSHOPS WITH LUCKY LUKE AND OTHER
COMIC BOOK HEROES
In parallel to the "The Art of Morris" exhibition, this year’s
Youth Workshops have chosen Lucky Luke as one of their
thematic heroes. All workshop sessions will be held
within the Comics Museum mediation rooms and will
each host 15 children for a period of 45 minutes. The
lucky participants will be able to learn how to design
and create a comic book with the help of professionals.
Careful, these events are very popular among children,
it is therefore necessary to book online on the
www.bdangouleme.com site, starting from the beginning of Christmas vacation.
AN EXHIBITION ON LASTMAN
Worshipped by teenagers, Lastman who won the
Series Award at last year’s Festival, will be back under
the spotlight for this year’s edition. The work of Balak,
Michael Sanlaville and Bastien Vives will be the subject of an exhibition that will showcase the very
graphic dimension of its Japanese manga-inspired universe. The ten books that appear in this year’s Youth
Selection will also be honoured in the Young Reader’s
Zone. They will be freely accessible to young festivalgoers in front of the Young Reader’s Zone reception
area. In order to allow everyone to discover the best
of 2015’s young reader comics, and indulge, for
those who wish, in the small game of predicting the
future winners!

MEETING THE AUTHORS:
A PRIVILEGED MOMENT
Speaking with the authors who made them laugh or
dream is always an exhilarating experience for young
readers. An essential part of the Festival, the roundtable discussions will be offered throughout the festival within the Comics Museum auditorium. The
program will include one-hour sessions with authors
who published books within the last year, including
those presented in the competition’s Youth Selection.
Considering the popularity of these events, it is always

THREE YOUNG READER PRIZES
AWARDED BY SCHOOLS
Supported and accompanied by the Poitiers Educational Authority and the Charente Board of Education,
three prizes give young readers the chance of becoming Festival judges. Starting at the end of October,
classes through elementary to middle and high school
will debate in order to choose the three winners of the
Angoulême School Prize, the Poitou-Charentes Middle
School Comic Prize and the Poitou-Charentes High
School Prize. Awarded on the Thursday at the start of
the festival, the three winners will then be showcased
in the Young Reader’s Zone until the end of the Festival.

it will settle in the Nil, a building steeped in history and technology that is located in front of the Moebius
ship, in the new National School for Gaming and Interactive Digital Media (ENJMIN). As usual, young artists
and technicians who are attracted to a career in comics or animation alike will find a wide range of answers
to their questions as well as material that should further stimulate their vocation.
A NEW SCHOOL TO DISCOVER
Which school to attend? To help these future professionals make the right decision, the Pavillon Jeunes Talents® is bringing together representatives from the best
specialized institutions: l’Ecole européenne supérieure
de l’image (EESI), l’Ecole des métiers du cinéma d’animation (EMCA), l’Ecole nationale du jeu et des
médias interactifs numériques (ENJMIN) and the school
that trains professionals for film animation. As well as
three schools which are mainly dedicated to comics:
L’Iconograf and Jean Trubert, already present during
FIBD’s previous editions and the Human Academy,
a newcomer specialized in manga which just opened
its doors last September.

MEETING WITH PROFESSIONALS
In order to consolidate a career choice, there is no
better way to do so, than in confronting oneself with
professionals. Young talents will be able to interact
with representatives from major publishing houses such
as Dargaud, Le Lombard, Casterman or Delcourt and
even present them their personal work in order to gain
feedback. Thanks to a permanency organized in the
Pavilion during business hours, students will always be
sure to find a professional to whom to present their
portfolio.

EXCITING EXHIBITIONS
Barely older than the visitors, the 20 winners of the
Young Talent Competition will already become a
source of inspiration for their young audience thanks
to the exhibition of pages from their works, suck as the
work of Camille Debray from Nantes, who was one
of the competition’s big winners and who has also
been entrusted with the design of the entire Pavillon
Jeunes Talents®. The 20 winners will also attend a
book-signing aperitif where they will interact with visitors in a friendly atmosphere. Another young artist who
will be under the spotlight is Pauline Aubry, whose “Les
Mutants” project won the KissKissBankBank jackpot,
one of the main European crowd-funding websites for
the arts. Her work will be presented in the temporary
exhibition space of the Paper Museum, right next to
the ENJMIN. Finally, the public will also be able to
admire works from the winners of the digital challenge.
TWO COMPETITIONS FOR DIGITAL CREATION
Make way for the pixels! The Digital Challenge competition offers young authors the chance to create an
original comic, specially adapted to digital screens. In
addition to the comics’ adequacy for new media, the
jury of professionals will also evaluate their graphic
and narrative qualities and will chose ten winners
whose works will be presented during the Festival in
the Young Talent Pavilion® and during six months on
the Festival’s website and online BDJeuneCréation platform. As for the famous Revelation Blog competition
dedicated to the Web, its name has been changed to
RévélatiOnline. This year’s game rules: to revisit a page
that has marked the history of comics offering alternative texts and image distribution without changing the
story’s initial meaning.

WORKSHOPS, LECTURES, SCREENINGS...
As every year, a plethora of workshops will be on
offer to visitors in dedicated rooms to enable them to
artistically and technically enrich themselves. They will
be led by students from different schools present in the
Pavillon Jeunes Talents®, as well as representatives
from the Toto Moko association which brings together
former students from the Parisian Jean Trubert school.
Furthermore, contributors with diverse skills will offer
lectures on various topics related to careers in comics
and animation. Finally, the public will also have the
chance to attend screenings of animated films made
by students, including those from the EMCA, a prestigious school based in Angouleme.

Selected in the 2014 Young Talent Awards, Pauline Aubry is being honoured during this year’s Festival, with her Les Mutants project, a documentary-comic book
about adolescent behaviours. In partnership with KissKissBankBank.

Comics/Illustration. This report later became Les
Mutants, to be published by Arena in January 2016.
Both an illustrative piece of journalism and a sensitive
and humorous chronicle of adolescence, Les Mutants
and their world will be presented in Angouleme in different forms: original pencilled-in plates, merchandise,
but also various elements chosen by Pauline Aubry herself (a sofa, a painting, objects from the author’s own
adolescence...).

“Adolescence is like a painting, we know how to look
at it but we don’t know how to understand it.” This
quote could not be more clear: Les Mutants are adolescents, that strange population with whom it is sometimes very hard to communicate and which is located
in a rather uncomfortable zone, stuck between carefree
childhood and the future responsibilities of adulthood.
In 2015, Pauline Aubry published an illustrative report
entitled “The Teenage Hospital” in the XXI magazine.
This was the first version of her end-of-the-year project

In recent years, the risograph has become increasingly
present in the field of alternative publishing for printing
magazines, books and posters.
This technique, adapted to all kinds of prints, combines both the advantages of screen-printing and photocopying. Developed in the 1980s by the Japanese
Riso firm, it prints out color by color which gives a
rather warm and slightly inaccurate finish, due to the
offset of the colors. The entrance hall of the Moebius
Ship, that is usually a passageway allowing visitors
to access various Festival exhibitions, will become a
workshop open to all and especially dedicated to creations with the risograph during four days.
The British publishers of Breakdown Press and the
French Lagon magazine team (their last 200-page
issue, published in 2015 and fully printed by a risograph, was very popular) will collaborate in order to
design, edit and produce, during the time of the Festival, a unique and unprecedented publication that
will bring together 15 comic book authors. This collaborative and interactive workshop that is oriented
both towards technology and crafts, will show festivalgoers that there are many ways to create books,
and will remind us that the fanzine and DIY cultures
are an integral part of comics, but also of the Festival’s
culture.

amongst today’s creators.

“Art has always essentially been a visual experiment.
Touch, which was long time considered as the “maternal sense”, has long been cut off from the artistic experience. Rediscovering the access to our personal touch
has become necessary in a world that is so centred on
the visual. Everyone, and not just people with vision
problems, seems to enjoy the experience of textures,
weight and sensations provided by a piece of art or
archaeology. For some committed artists, touching has
even become a political issue. Indeed, by arousing the
sense of touch in their work through the use of textured
materials, Braille alphabet or specifically designed
installations for the visually impaired, these artists are
dealing directly with the issue of access to art.”
Hence, the Shapereader project, which offers all festivalgoers a touch-based reading experience. Several
carved wooden panels are arranged in a circular
room, each of which is divided into a plurality of
square zones whose laser engraved forms have a
well-defined meaning: places, characters, items,
actions and emotions are thus symbolized by different
forms designed to be easily assimilated. The reader
places his hands on these different patterns and gradually the “book of forms” will deliver its meaning,
allowing readers to piece together the narration in
their minds, to understand the actions and feelings
and finally to read a story in a completely different
way.

The exhibition presents the work of the 2014/2015 edition of the “A l’Ecole de la
BD” School Comics Award winners.
On Thursday January 28th the Discovery Awards Ceremony will be held at the Angoulême Theatre - Scene
National where the winners of the four following prizes will be announced: Prix d’Angoulême de la BD
Scolaire, Prix du Scénario, Prix du Graphisme and Prix Coup de coeur. An opportunity not only to celebrate
the winners, but also to celebrate the success of this initiative that continues to demonstrate its virtues as a
learning tool and vector of creativity throughout the years.

40 works divided into 75 original plates will allow visitors to discover and appreciate the exceptional
quality of the work of these young artists aged 5-18 years. Last year, Arthur de Pins had concocted the
scenography of the Espace Caisse d’Eparnge around the kitchen theme. For this 43rd Festival edition, the
“western” theme will take over with Clement Oubrerie’s world, sponsor of the 2016 School Comics Award.

Readers Zone. Their authors will be invited to the Festival on Thursday January 28th for their very first exhibition.

”boost” for the start of their careers.

year by awarding a prize to one of the 40 officially selected works. The objective: to offer the

15th and January 30th and during the Festival in
the Official Selection area sponsored by Cultura,
until noon on January 30th.
The presentation of the ”People’s Choice Award”
will take place on Saturday, January 30th on the

over the years, a landmark in the comics
business.
The Angouleme international rights and licences market
is the place to be for comics professionals! A part of
the Festival for twenty-five years, it has grown to
become a meeting place for professionals from all
over the world. Europeans, Asians, North Americans,
South Americans and Africans meet up every year in
order to network and negotiate the rights of comics.
Apart from the traditional publishing industry, these
rights are increasingly sold to the cinema, television
and video game industries.
All in order to encourage, from Thursday morning to
Saturday evening, countless transactions that will either
conclude during the Festival or that will begin on this
occasion and finalize themselves at a later time. Which

2016 OFFICIAL COMPETITION
All you need to know about the organisation of the official festival awards,
which will be awarded to the best comics published in 2015.
Comprising 9 prizes known as the Fauves d’Angoulême, the Official Awards of the International
Comics Festival reward comic books published in
French irrespective of their country of origin, and sold
in libraries of Francophone countries between the
beginning of December and the end of November of
the following year. These Fauves d’Angoulême are
awarded during the Festival by several distinct juries.
The juries choose the winning books from five shortlisted selections drawn up throughout the year by a

There are around thirty non-professionnal publications on the shortlist, with no
distinction of geographic origin or periodicity. A specialized jury will award one
of the shortlisted books with the Fauve d’Angoulême – Alternative Comics Award,
which rewards the best non-professional publication.

OFFICIAL SELECTION AND AWARDS CEREMONY
The names of the winners of the Fauves d’Angoulême, i.e. the
Official Festival Awards, will be revealed onstage at the
Théâtre d’Angoulême during the awards ceremony to be held
at 7pm on Saturday January 30th 2016 (except for the Fauve
d’Angoulême – Young Readers’ Award, rewarded at 6pm on
Thursday January 28th during the Discovery Awards Ceremony
– see below for details).
The Fauve d’Angoulême – Alternative Comics Award will also
be awarded on the occasion of the Fauves Ceremony.

LE PALMARÈS JEUNESSE (THE YOUTH SELECTION)
There are 4 prizes in the Youth Selection, rewarding comic books published in
French irrespective of their country of origin, and sold in libraries of Francophone countries between the month of August and the same month in the following year. The 4 Youth Selection Prizes are attributed, most often in a school
environment, by different children and teenage jurys, who make note of their
favourite books that have been pre-selected by the Festival (represented by its
Youth Section representative) in collaboration with the Poitou-Charentes Region
Educational Authority.
Fauve d’Angoulême – Prix jeunesse (Young Readers’ Award). Cf. “2015
Official Competition”
• Prix des Écoles d’Angoulême (Angoulême Schools Award), sponsored by
the City of Angoulême. Children aged 7 to 9 from four elementary Angoulême
schools each rank a shortlist of five comic books, which have been specially
selected for their educational value and content. The books are ranked in
accordance with the obtained notes, an average of the four rankings is then
•
calculated. The book having obtained the highest average is declared winner
of the prize.
• Prix BD des Collégiens de Poitou- Charentes (Poitou-Charentes Middle School
Award), awarded in partnership with the Poitiers education authority. As part
of an educational project based around comic books, students from 8 middle
school classes in the Poitou-Charentes region each rank a shortlist of 5 selected
comic books. The books are ranked in accordance with the obtained notes,
an average of the eight rankings is then calculated. The book having obtained
the highest average is declared winner of the prize.
• Prix BD des Lycéens de Poitou-Charentes, (Poitou-Charentes High School
Award), awarded in partnership with the Poitiers education authority. As part
of an educational project based around comic books, students from 10 high
school classes in the Poitou-Charentes region each rank a shortlist of 5 selected
comic books. The books are ranked in accordance with the obtained notes,
an average of the five rankings is then calculated. The book having obtained
the highest average is declared winner of the prize.
LES PRIX DÉCOUVERTES (DISCOVERY AWARDS)

This prize awards non-professional works by young creators destined to young readers
There are 7 Prix Découvertes, awarded by different juries of comic book professionals, destined to reward young promising artists whose works have not yet been
professionally published.
“À l’école de la BD” School Comics Awards, sponsored by the National Education Ministry and the Caisse d’Epargne. Attributed by a jury of comic book
professionals and open to children and teenagers schooled in France with no
age distinction, the “À l’école de la BD” School Comics Awards include four
distinct prizes: Best Graphic Style, Best Script, “Coup de Coeur” and the Prix
d’Angoulême for the Best School Comic Book. The prize laureates are chosen
by the jury amid forty “national laureates”, the “éceuils d’or”, of whom the works
are exposed during the Festival.
• Prix Jeunes Talents (Young Talent Award) sponsored by the Caisse d’Epargne.
The Prix Jeunes Talents rewards a young unpublished author from among the 20
authors whose work is on display at the Young Talent Exhibition following the
Young Talent Competition the Festival organizes each year. The Poitou-Charentes
Region also gives one of the 20 Young Talent nominees the Prix Jeunes Talents
Poitou-Charentes under the reserve that he or she must live in Poitou-Charentes

and be at least 17 years of age. These two prizes are attributed following the
decision of a jury of comic book professionals.
• Prix RévélatiONline (Online Revelation Award)
For its 9th edition, the Blog Revelation Award is becoming RevelatiONline. The
aim is to reinterpret a page from an award-winning book at Angoulême from
a predetermined list. Thirty projects from unpublished authors will be shortlisted.
Following a public vote, a jury of professionals will select the winner - who
will be offered the opportunity to create the poster for contest’s next edition –
and the two runners-up.

Digital Challenge
For its second edition, the Digital Challenge invites authors to propose their
digital creations. From September 28th to December 31st 2015 at midnight,
the participants are invited to upload their works that will be selected by a
jury of professionals rewarding their innovation and appropriate use of the
digital tool as well as their narrative and graphic qualities.

A VERY WELL CONNECTED FAUVE!
A dynamic website, Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pearltrees Instagram and Tumblr
accounts, a YouTube channel and a special website for professionals: a plethora of
online tools in order to live the Festival with intensity, before, during and after the event.
Exhibitions, meetings, shows, conferences ... How to
make sense of the great quantity of events on offer during the four days of the Festival? For any connected
festivalgoer, it’s as easy as 1,2,3, thanks to a wide
range of informational tools that allow you to consult
the program of events at any time and even be alerted
about forthcoming events. Not to mention the different
options that allow you to watch videos and pictures of
events which have already taken place.
New this year: in order to provide visitors with an even
clearer vision of Festival news, the bdangouleme.com
website has been completely revised.
As comprehensive as it is user-friendly, not only does
it offer practical information on all activities, but also
cultural content related to these activities: Articles, interviews, videos, photos and even live broadcasts. In
addition to this is the bdangoulemepro.com website,
which offers more business-oriented content and provides information on events reserved for professionals.
It also allows them to make their accreditation requests
and to obtain specific information and details on all
the dedicated areas: Le Monde des Bulles, le Nouveau Monde, L’Espace Para-BD, l’Espace BD alternative and The International Rights & Licensing Market.
Thanks to social networks, visitors can also become
actors of the Festival. With Facebook and Google+,
they can engage in instantaneous exchanges, comment on events or share information. And if they use
Twitter, all they need to do is follow @actudufauve in
order to ask questions or follow all the Festival highlights such as talks, conferences, the opening ceremony and above all the closing one, to follow the
awards ceremony in real time. Another useful online
tool, created especially for professionals is Pearltrees
which offers storage space for web content as well as
an interface for sharing resources. As for Instagram, it
offers a snapshot of what’s going on in the Festival’s
backstage, with a stream of pictures taken on the spot,
whilst Tumblr offers more graphic and fun oriented content throughout the event. Not to forget the WebTV
and its live videos during the entire event, accessible
