Welcome to the second edition
of our „drive“ magazine. We have
tried to put together another varied bunch of interesting topics
for you. At the same time, we will
show you what you can expect
from the CDA, now and in the future.
The Far East is an issue for all of
us, and for the CDA too, and we
are pleased to be able to share
our experiences from this year,
but there is much more which
makes the bold image of the CDA
so striking.

Normalerweise sind Scheiben sehr kratzempfindlich. Aber nicht, wenn Sie von
uns kommen. Denn Scheiben aus dem Hause CDA besitzen eine Antikratz-Beschichtung. Dadurch werden Gebrauchsspuren deutlich vermindert, Fingerabdrücke können gefahrlos abgewischt werden und die Datensicherheit wird
entschieden erhöht. Ob Sie eine Scheibe von uns auch als Scheibenkratzer
verwenden können, müssten Sie einfach mal ausprobieren.

Die Eighties erleben ihre Renaissance,
und damit auch die CD. Unsere „Pop
Discs“ bestechen durch ihre intensiven
Farben, die als Gestaltungsmerkmal
viel Aufmerksamkeit erregen. In Verbindung mit einer ebenso leuchtenden
Verpackungslösung lassen sich mit der
„POP Disc“ Spiele, Musik und Filme am
POS ins rechte Licht rücken. Die POP
Disc besteht aus speziell eingefärbtem
Polycarbonat, welches über eine intensive Leuchtkraft verfügt, die durch das

Umgebungslicht hervorgerufen wird.
Diese Eigenschaft kann mit dem Labelaufdruck verblüffende Ergebnisse zeigen und sogar mit anderen innovativen
Labeldruckverfahren der CDA, wie z. B.
dem Relief-Druck, verbunden werden.
Neben der Aufmerksamkeit steigernden Wirkung dient die Farbe auch als
Authentifizierungsmerkmal. Die POP
Disc ist als CD und als DVD verfügbar
und kann im Bereich von 17 bis 118
mm bedruckt werden, so dass das
Label optimal gestaltet werden kann.
Als Druckverfahren steht neben dem
Sieb- und Offsetdruck auch der HD-
Print, mit dem die Label in fotoähnlicher Qualität gedruckt werden können,
zur Verfügung. Besondere Effekte lassen sich zudem durch eine Teilbesputterung des Datenträgers erzielen. Die
POP Disc kann in allen herkömmlichen
CD- und DVD-Verpackungen geliefert
werden. Die CDA bietet aber wie gewohnt weitere vielfältige individuelle
Verpackungslösungen an, die den
Kundenanforderungen nach dem „Besonderen“ Rechnung tragen. Die POP
Disc ist in den Farben Gelb, Grün, Rot
und Orange verfügbar.

of specially coloured polycarbonate
with intense luminosity generated by
the ambient light. This characteristic
can be combined with printed labels
to create amazing effects and even
combined with other innovative CDA
label printing processes such as relief
printing. As well as the attention-grabbing effect, the colour also acts as an
authentication feature. The POPdisc is
available in CD and DVD format and
can be printed in the range from 17 to
118 mm to allow optimum label design.
Printing processes available include

photo quality. Special effects can also
be achieved by means of partial sputtering of the data carrier. The POPdisc

Wenn eine Motte in der Nacht unterwegs ist, lebt sie gefährlich. Weil es
zahlreiche Fressfeinde auf den Nachtfalter abgesehen haben, hat dieser
eine erstaunliche Fähigkeit entwickelt:
Mit ihren Facettenaugen können die
Insekten im Dunkeln sehen, ohne sich
dabei selbst durch Lichtreflexe zu verraten.
Was in der Tierwelt beeindruckt, ist
auch für die Wissenschaft von großer
Bedeutung. Besonders im Bereich von
Oberflächen optischer Materialien wie
z.B. Screens, Brillengläser, Solarzellen
oder Kameraobjektive sind Lichtreflexe lästig. Das Problem gilt bislang als
unvermeidbar und wird oftmals durch
Antireflexbeschichtungen gelöst. Das
reflektierte Licht wird dabei trotzdem
„verschluckt“ und mindert die Leistung
von Mikroskopen oder Objektiven.
Was macht das Mottenauge so besonders?
Der Grund für die reduzierte Lichtspiegelung in den Facettenaugen ist
eine ausgeklügelte Entwicklung der
Evolution: Auf den Augen der Insekten
befinden sich zahlreiche „Noppen“,
nur knapp 100 Nanometer klein. Das
Muster der Noppen ist kleiner als die
Wellenlänge des Lichts und sorgt so
für einen fließenden Übergang der Brechung von Luft und Licht. Das Ergebnis
ist eine nahezu perfekte Entspiegelung.

„format war“, the Blu-ray Disc prevailed against the HD DVD, as it offers an
even better film and sound quality.
Who believes, though, that Blu-ray
is the maximum of resolution and vividness we can ever reach is wrong.
For many years, there has been a lot
of speculation around in confidence
about a possible successor: the Purpl-Ray Disc. It is supposed to offer a
gigantic memory space of 8 Terrabytes
with 250 Gigabytes per layer. It makes
it possible to scan up to 32 layers. It
supports the 11.2 sound. And it is said
to bring the native motion picture resolution into our home entertainment
systems. Moreover, it is supposed to
have a rewritable partition, so that films
downloaded from the Internet can be
stored directly onto it.
The CD‘s and DVD‘s function will therefore remain indispensable also in
the next decades to come – despite all
the handy streaming around. Beside a
largely enhanced quality, they make for
a haptic experience which, lastly, not
only collectors love.

Japan gilt als eines der bedeutendsten

Kein Wunder also, dass dort auch die
führende Messe für Nanotechnologie
stattfindet. Und wenn an einem Ort so
viele Innovationen gezeigt werden, ist
CDA natürlich mit dabei.
Was sind die Trends der Zukunft? Wohin geht die Reise der Nanotechnologie? Um zu erfahren, wie sich die neuen Technologien mit den Technologien
der CDA kombinieren lassen, reiste
die CDA-Delegation mit Frau Pia Harju
(Business Development) und Dr. Nicolaus Hettler (Managing Director) aus
dem thüringischen Suhl nach Tokio.

nanotechnology exhibition and conference is held there. And CDA, of course, cannot miss a hot spot of so much

does the journey go in nanotechnology? In order to know how the latest
technologies blend with CDA‘s own
developments, a delegation of the
company, consisting of Ms. Pia Harju
(Business Development) and Dr. Nicolaus Hettler (Managing Director) went
from Suhl in Thuringia to Tokyo.
Numerous universities, institutes and
companies from all over the world
presented the latest trends in nano-,
micro- and ministructuring there. The
trade event also focused on environmental protection as well as on the research in new energy sources through
nanotechnology.
After its journey to „The Land of the
Rising Sun“, CDA‘s delegation unanimously agreed on the conclusion that
our company is already very well positioned in the field of polymer solutions.
But however, we need to pay attention
to trends and developments, as the
world does not stop turning.
After all, the mother country of miniaturization does not have its reputation
for nothing.

LAND OF THE DRAGON.
For years, China has already been
deemed to be one of the big markets
for medium-sized enterprises in Thuringia, including CDA. For this reason,
Frank Hartwig went to see the Land of
the Dragon this year at the end of May
as part of a delegation.
Apart from business negotiations, the
journey also offered a number of further
advantages to CDA‘s Chief Executive
Officer: „We were able to have many
conversations with Chinese politicians
and entrepreneurs and could exchange valuable insights. I get back to Suhl
with a lot of positive impressions.“

The German group included more
than 80 representatives from politics,
economy, science and culture which
had to go through a large, but varying
programme with more than 60 appointments. The 7,000 km journey was
headed by the Prime Minister of the
German Federal State of Thuringia, Ms
Christine Lieberknecht, the Thuringian
Minister of Education and the Arts, Mr
Christoph Matschie, and the Minister
for Economic Affairs of Thuringia, Mr
Matthias Machnig.

China gilt seit vielen Jahren als einer
der größten Märkte für mittelständische Unternehmen in Thüringen – darunter auch die CDA. Aus diesem Grund
besuchte Frank Hartwig das Land der
aufgehenden Sonne im Rahmen einer
Delegationsreise Ende Mai dieses Jahres.
Zu der deutschen Gruppe aus Politik,
Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Kultur
zählten mehr als 80 Teilnehmer, die mit
über 60 Terminen ein umfangreiches
aber abwechslungsreiches Programm
zu absolvieren hatten. Mit an Bord
der über 7.000 km weiten Reise waren unter anderem Thüringens Ministerpräsidentin Christine Lieberknecht,
Kultusminister Christoph Matschie und

Wirtschaftsminister Matthias Machnig.
Das Fazit der Reise fällt sehr positiv
aus. Die chinesiche Strategie, zukünftig verstärkt in hoch innovative, technologieintensive Vorhaben zu investieren, passt ideal zum breitgefächerten
Angebot der CDA. Bereits im letzten
Jahr betrugen die Exporte Thüringens
in das Reich der Mitte knapp 600 Millionen Euro. Diese Marke soll in den
kommenden Jahren nun sukzessive
ausgebaut werden.

The Medium-Sized Business Initiative
of Huber Publishing House for New
Media annually awards a prize to the
best industrial solutions. In 2013, the
Diagnosis Disc – a joint project with
some of CDA‘s partners – has made
it onto the much coveted list of top
industries.
The importance of lab-on-a-chip and intelligent embedded diagnostic systems
for applications in medicine, eco technologies and life science is growing steadily. CDA is one of the manufacturers
of these complex systems. A Diagnosis
Disc made of polycarbonate, which was
developed in a joint project with a Finnish
partner, has now entered the Medium-Sized Business Initiative‘s Top Industry List
2013 in the category of biotechnologies.
The polycarbonate Diagnosis Disc contains 60 individual chips as well as a
number of printed conductive tracks.
Its integrated microstructural components do not only guarantee a cost-efficient production process, but they also
offer a number of additional functionalities. By intelligently combining different
technologies, the disc is highly suitable
for mass application, e.g. in medicine or
eco technologies.
What the Finnish Think Tank had already
invented has been complemented and
driven to marketability with some new
ideas of CDA as part of the project. The
company from Suhl has thus proven
once again to be a progressive company whose manufacturing capabilities are
sought after all over the world.
The Huber Publishing House for New Media‘s initiative does not only award the Top
Industry Prize every year. Its Top Industry
List actually shows the most innovative

Als Chairman der MEDIA-TECH Association setzt sich Frank Hartwig – Geschäftsführer und Sprecher der CDA

in Hamburg nun für weitere drei Jahre
zum obersten Organ der Organisation
gewählt. Während er um die Welt reist,
um Kollegen aus Europa, Asien und
Amerika zu treffen, geht es ihm aber
vor allem um den Austausch neuer
Trends sowie das Knüpfen fester Partnerschaften, von denen die CDA seit
vielen Jahren profitiert.

Um das Netzwerk weiter auszubauen
und bessere Einkaufsbedingungen zu
schaffen, gründeten 13 Compact DiscHersteller bereits im Jahr 2004 in Philadelphia die Einkaufsgemeinschaft
„Colonial Purchasing“. Das kooperative Unternehmen versteht sich als eine
Art „Genossenschaft“, die Rohstoffe
zur Herstellung von Speichermedien in
großen Mengen bestellt und dadurch
enorme Kostenvorteile erzielt.
Auch Frank Hartwig selbst freut sich
auf die kommenden Aufgaben: „Ehrlich gesagt musste ich keine Sekunde
überlegen. Es ist eine Ehre für mich,
zusammen mit namhaften Unternehmen die Projekte und Innovationen der
Colonial Purchasing voranzutreiben“.

As the Chairman of the MEDIA-TECH
Association, Frank Hartwig – Managing
Director and CEO of CDA – has been
promoting the interests of the storage
media industry for many years already.
In June, he was elected a member of
the highest body of the organisation
for three more years in Hamburg. While
he travels around the globe in order to
meet up with colleagues from Europe,
Asia and America, he is primarily interested in exchanging new trends and in
fostering stable partnerships, to CDA‘s
benefit for many years already.
In order to expand their network and to
create better purchase conditions, 13
Compact Disc manufacturers founded
the Colonial Purchasing buying cooperative in Philadelphia in 2004. The
cooperative places volume orders for
materials needed in the production of
storage media, thus gaining enormous
cost advantages.

Im Jahr 2004, zu einer Zeit, als die
Materialkosten für die Herstellung von
Compact Discs dramatisch gestiegen
waren, wurde ein kooperatives Gemeinschaftsunternehmen gegründet. Dreizehn Compact-Disc-Hersteller aus den
USA kamen in Philadelphia zusammen,
um eine neue Allianz mit dem Namen
Colonial Purchasing zu schmieden.
Durch Beitritt zu dieser Einkaufskooperation gewannen die einzelnen Unternehmen mehr Macht beim Einkauf von
Rohstoffen, die für die Herstellung von
Compact Discs benötigt werden. Im
Rahmen der von der Kooperation geschlossenen Verträge werden Kunststoffgranulat und eine Vielzahl anderer
Volumengüter zum Replizieren, Bedrucken und Verpacken in größeren Mengen eingekauft, wodurch niedrigere
Preispunkte erzielt werden.

In 2004 a time where the cost of materials necessary to make compact discs
had risen dramatically, a co-operative
venture was formed. Thirteen compact
disc manufacturers in the United States
met in Philadelphia to form a new alliance called Colonial Purchasing.
Purchasing beruht ganz einfach darauf, dass es für ein Unternehmen sehr
viel schwieriger ist, Gewinn zu erzielen,
ohne die Preise anzuheben, wenn die
Rohstoffe nur in den für das jeweilige Unternehmen benötigten Mengen
eingekauft werden. Die Mitglieder
der Einkaufskooperation von Colonial
Purchasing hingegen sind in der Lage,
ihren Kunden hochwertige Produkte
zu einem konkurrenzfähigen Preis zu

MEMORY SUMMIT IN KALIFORNIEN
Im August diesen Jahres fand in Santa Clara Kalifornien der Flash Memory
Summit 2013 statt. Zu diesem Kongress finden sich Jahr für Jahr Spezialisten zusammen, um ihre Neuheiten
und Zukunftstechnologien auf dem
Gebiet der Flash-Speicher zu präsentieren und zu diskutieren. Auch unser
Mitarbeiter Hagen Schmidt, Manager
Flash Media Automotive war in diesem
Jahr vor Ort.
Rund um den Veranstaltungsort, im
sogenannten Silicon Valley sind die
Top Unternehmen aus der IT Branche
wie Apple, Google, Facebook und Intel
angesiedelt. Auf dem Programm des
Kongresses standen ganztägige Tutorials, Vorträge, Workshops und fachspezifische Sitzungen. Begleitet wurde der
Kongress von einer zweitägigen Messe
auf der neue Produkte, Test - und Duplikationssysteme sowie Dienstleistungen rund um den Bereich Flashspeichermedien präsentiert wurden.
Das Kerngeschäft der CDA im Geschäftsbereich Flash Media Solutions
liegt in der Duplikation von Daten auf
SD Karten für die Automobil Industrie.
In diesen sind neben einem Kontroller

NAND Flashspeicherzellen verbaut.
Da das Medium NAND Flash einem
enormen Preisdruck unterliegt, müssen die Strukturbreiten in mittlerweile
immer kürzeren Zeitabständen verkleinert werden, um die Kosten zu senken.
Man spricht hier vom sogenannten
Shrinken. Dabei wird die Strukturbreite einer NAND Flash Speicherzelle
verkleinert. Aktuell werden in unseren
Produkten NAND Flashspeicherzellen mit Strukturbreiten von 24nm bis
19nm eingesetzt. Die Flashspeicher
Hersteller stoßen mit den aktuellen
Herstellungsverfahren langsam an ihre
Grenzen. Zum einen verschlingen die
Entwicklungskosten Unsummen und
zum anderen können die geforderten
Endurance und Performance Werte
mit kleineren Strukturen nicht mehr
erreicht werden. Aktuell werden die
Flashspeicherzellen planar angeordnet. Die führenden Flashspeicherhersteller sind dabei ein neues Konzept
bei der Anordnung der Flashspeicherzellen umzusetzen. Führend ist hier aktuell Samsung.
Eines der Highlights in diesem Jahr
war die Vorstellung von Samsung, des
ersten 3D vertikal NAND Flashspeichers. Samsung Electronics präsentierte hierzu in einem Vortrag eine SSD
Festplatte, in der ein 3D NAND Flashspeicher vertikal angeordnet ist. Dieses
Herstellungsverfahren verspricht Preisvorteile und eine Verbesserung der Endurance und Performance Werte. HAGEN SCHMIDT AT

Clara, California. At this congress, specialists come together year after year
to showcase and discuss their innovations and future technologies in the
field of flash memory. Our colleague

The top companies of the IT industry
such as Apple, Google, Facebook and
Intel are all located around the venue;

Flash memory producers are slowly
reaching their limits with the current
manufacturing processes because on
the one hand, development costs are
running to unimaginable amounts, and
on the other hand, the endurance and
performance values required can no
longer be achieved with smaller structures. Currently, flash memory cells are
laid out in a planar arrangement and
leading flash memory manufacturers
are working on the implementation of
a new concept in the arrangement of
flash memory cells. Samsung is currently the leader here and one of the
highlights this year was the introduction by Samsung of the first 3D vertical
NAND flash memory. In the course of a
lecture, Samsung Electronics presented an SSD hard drive which was fitted
with a 3D NAND flash memory. With
this new technology, the arrangement
is vertical rather than planar as previously. This manufacturing process promises a price benefits and an improvement in endurance and performance
values.
If the promises are true, this technology will open up many new areas
of application and existing problems
caused by the shrinkage of flash
memory cells will be again be a
thing of the past.
