Awards SBM WINS BEST PRIVATE BANK AWARD SBM rates among the best according to emeafinance! Indeed SBM was designated as the continent’s Best Private Bank by the African Banking Awards 2010, in recognition of the success of its private banking team, which offers unique services and tailors its services to clients’ needs and aspirations. The Award organisers also underlined SBM’s innovative investment funds as well as products such as mortgages. On a lighter note, SBM was also praised for giving free access to customers and their families to SBM Park, its own leisure and sports club. This third edition of African Banking Awards, organised by emeafinance, gave recognition to retail and investment banks across a greater number of countries on the African continent. Emeafinance said : “ these institutions have shown that despite the challenges of the downturn, they have strong leadership, financial standing and risk management practices to succeed where many have stalled”. BEST ONLINE REPORTING FOR SBM SBM’s policy of quality and clear financial repor ting as well as the recent website revamping have paid off. The Bank won the Online Repor ting category for the PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) Corporate Repor ting Awards held on Monday 28 February 2011. The main objective of this event is to promote excellence in corporate repor ting in Mauritius and to improve the quality of annual repor ts and financial repor ting. The jury worked on three main assessment criteria: content, clarity and correlation, applied through the seven categories including Online Repor ting. This category was introduced in 2009 to encourage companies to make a better use of their websites to communicate with their most impor tant target group: shareholders and investors. The SBM team is proud of this achievement which results directly from the dedication of all the staff who have worked on the Bank’s financial repor ts and the maintenance of its website. SBM AWARDED “BEST LOCAL BANK” IN PRIVATE BANKING BY EUROMONEY SBM has recently been designated “Best Local Bank” by the annual Euromoney Private Banking Survey. This distinction is an important recognition for SBM as the Private Banking Awards are among the most prestigious honours in the growing area of Wealth Management. Voted by private bankers themselves, the awards are attributed following a survey carried out in 65 countries, in both global and regional categories. This survey provides a qualitative and quantitative review of the best services in private banking, by region and by areas of service. This recognition by Euromoney once again confirms the good standing of our private banking services. e STAT US • ISSUE 0 8 • MAY 2011 02 SBM talk Textile industry facing challenges Clothing industry remains highly competitive at international level and challenges ahead are numerous and tough for the Mauritian industry. This opinion was expressed during the 22nd SBM Talk held on 18 March 2011 by Mr. Maurice Vigier de Latour – Director of MVL Marketing Ltd. Recalling the vital role played by the Expor t Processing Zone (EPZ) as from 1970 in the “Mauritian Miracle”, our guest speaker stated that the textile industry still employs 8% of the country’s work force and is the biggest foreign exchange earner with increased concentration in Textile and Apparel. Since 2006, EPZ has been reclassified as the Expor t Oriented Enterprises (EOE) and the “Made in Mauritius” label has gained recognition in prestigious textile brands of Europe and US. But, according to Mr. Vigier de Latour, about 20% of the Mauritian operators in textile were unprofitable in the last financial year due to high international competition, a situation worsened with the general appreciation of the rupee against the expor t currencies. Challenges for our textile industry: becoming a fast fashion producer, extensive use of airfreight, ver tical integration into capital intensive operations and regional integration to increase critical mass. For Mr. Viger de Latour, 70% of the solutions are in the hands of the operators while the other 30% depend upon the Government and the banks so as to keep a high level of dynamism among all stakeholders. Mr. Maurice Vigier de Latour holds 30 years of experience in the textile sector. He is Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key (GOSK) for major contribution to the Mauritius Expor t Industry. He is a Board Member of the Mauritius Expor t Processing Zone Association and has been President of American Chamber of Commerce in Mauritius, President of Mauritius - US Business Association and Board Member of African Coalition for Trade. Leaders of today The 23rd SBM Talk, held on 7 April 2011, focused on “Leadership Skills” with a presentation by Mrs. Vimi Anuradha Appadoo, Managing Director of The Competency Co Ltd. “Leaders see oppor tunities everywhere... leadership is a spor ts for everyone today”, stated our speaker, explaining that people do not need a title to lead. She thus quoted President Barack Obama: “The best leaders really are people… who make it possible, when the time is right… It is impor tant to remember that taking the lead doesn’t always have to happen from the front.” Mrs. Appadoo elaborated on management by authority or power, pointing out that authority is about getting people to do things through our personal influence while power is forcing someone to do things because of our position or strength. Successful people lead with authority while power erodes relationships. Leaders pay a lot of attention to their look and to what they say and do, to maximise on the first impression. Four drivers for effective leadership are: self-direction, people skills, sense of communication and accountability. A good leader must also lead people by example. It was observed that nowadays people need to do more, better, faster… with less time! The solution is to work smar ter. Mrs. Appadoo has more than 15 years of experience at Management Level in the UK and Mauritius. An MQA Qualified Trainer in Communication and Management, she currently ranks among the top 10 Dale Carnegie Trainers and is also trainer for the World Bank Office in Senegal and for Women Entrepreneur in the Indian Ocean Region. She is Vice President of Association Mauricienne Femmes Chefs D’Entreprise (AMFCE). e STAT US • ISSUE 0 8 • MAY 2011 03 CSR Responsabilité Sociale Des car tes pour Oasis de Paix Un chèque d’un montant total de Rs 150,094.09 a été remis récemment par la SBM à l’organisation Oasis de Paix.
