CHRIS MAENE German harpsichord “JohannMayer” (Stuttgart, 1619) Maene-Doutreligne s.p.r.l. Industriestraat 42 - B8755 Ruiselede - Belgium All rights reserved German Harpsichord “Johann Mayer” (Stuttgart, 1619) by CHRIS MAENE Version Française : During the 17th century, there were only a few harpsichord makers in Germany. Most of the harpsichords were imported from the Low Countries, Italy and England. The German keyboard makers were primary organ builders who made in addition harpsichords and clavichords. Only a few early German harpsichords survived. Some of them are extraordinary, just like the Johann Mayer harpsichord. The original is in the Carolino-Augusteum Museum in Salzburg. With the disposition 2 x 8’ but with three rows of jacks who are placed in three different positions, this instrument is a typical example of the early German harpsichords. The front, nasal row is close to the nut. The middle row is placed as usually found in normal harpsichords, and the back row plucks deep into the strings. This Johann Mayer’s harpsichord with its keyboard in mother-of-pearl, the refined ornated case in natural woods and the beautiful soundboard paintings with an elaborate rose makes a statement of luxury and elegance. This replica shows all skills and possibilities of the Chris Maene workshop.
