Ils devraient s’affronter. Mais l’être humain trouve parfois d’étonnantes ressources pour braver la logique d’entreprise en se réinventant un destin. et Les Inséparables. z Screenwriter and playwright, Corinne Atlas has also written many films, including Une Famille Formidable, Le Triporteur de Belleville, and Les Inséparables. 6 The exhilarating 1970’s. The three Ribelli sisters are between the ages of 15 and 21. Jeanne, the oldest, is swept up in the women’s liberation movement. She is convinced her future lies in Paris, far from the small town near Aix-en-Provence where she was born. Brigitte, the middle sister, refuses to conform to the emerging feminist ideology. She is determined to marry a man who will make her a happy housewife. Elsa, the youngest sister, is sure she’ll become a famous writer some day… But the Ribelli sister’s lives don’t match up to their youthful dreams. Jeanne becomes a midwife and falls into the arms of a young Italian revolutionary. She finds herself an unmarried mother. Brigitte sees her dream of conjugal bliss dashed by the repeated infidelities of her philandering husband. Elsa’s literary aspirations are sacrificed to an adulterous passion, followed by a devastating depression. Through the eyes of the three sisters, this novel recounts the last years of the 20th century, highlighting in particular the feminist movements since the 1970’s that have transformed morals and family life in Western societies. • Librairie Arthème Fayard Littérature Fiction Corinne Atlas Les Sœurs Ribelli The RIbeLLI SISterS August 2012 Fayard 256 pages World Rights Film & TV Rights Thierry Beinstingel z Thierry Beinstingel est l’auteur de plusieurs romans dont Retour aux mots sauvages (Fayard, 2010), salué par la presse et par l’Académie Goncourt qui l’inclut dans sa sélection. z Thierry Beinstingel is the author of several novels, including the critically-acclaimed Retour aux mots sauvages (Fayard, 2010), nominated by the Académie Goncourt. His colleagues call him “the ancestor” or the “bear”. But he doesn’t care. As long as they let him go his own solitary way–on the road. He’s been a wallpaper sales rep for forty years now. But all of a sudden, his superiors want him to sell couches, too. Well, it’s already taken man millions of years to learn to stand on his own two legs; there’s no way our veteran wallpaper man is going to stoop to selling couches. The fact is, he has a very particular take on things, most likely shaped by Rimbaud’s correspondence. The dog-eared volume is with him wherever he goes… She’s young, but she knows how to fend for herself; her business degree was earned on merit alone. And she’s just been appointed head of sales! The completely unexpected salary hike has enabled her to finance a much too big apartment, one room of which remains stubbornly empty. Her very first mission is perfectly clear: to lay off the ancestor. A confrontation is inevitable. But faced with the implacable logic of corporate strategy, human beings are able to find surprising inner resources at times–and even alter fate. Thirty-two-year old Mathilde can fend for herself. She always has a ready reply, to the point of insolence. She lives in Paris and works for a company that organizes business seminars. Emotionally, she doesn’t like to tie herself down. Motherhood is not her thing; she likes going out and sleeping late. Then she meets Eugène. He’s forty-five, divorced and lives in the suburbs with his two teenage kids, Vincent, sixteen, and Chloe, almost twelve. When the two adolescents enter the picture, the previously smooth-sailing romance hits choppy waters: weekends, last minute changes of schedule, vacations together… Vincent and Chloe are tough; they’ve made mincemeat of their father’s previous girlfriends, but Mathilde is a fighter. She is determined not to give in but all her efforts ever get her are slammed doors, mixed feelings, jealousy and rivalry. Every so often a small victory is won, in extremis. Milan, 1508. 57-year-old provost, Vittore, has finally decided to look around for someone able to put up with the finicky habits of a confirmed bachelor. Then one of his beadles discovers a human head in the baptistery of Saint Ambroise! The cleanly-severed head had been placed on a silver platter engraved with the words VENIT IUSTITIAE SOL–“The Sun of Righteousness Has Shone”. Vittore puts off his hypothetical wedding plans to investigate. The head in question had belonged to architect Liviano Maggiore. And as fate would have it, his widow, Fosca Maggiore, happens to be an attractive woman of about forty. Vittore finds himself captivated by the charming widow. But Fosca isn't telling him the whole truth; clearly she is hiding a terrible secret. Before he knows it, Vittore finds himself caught up in an age-old battle opposing the Church and a secret sect. Could it be that the prophet's head is still worshiped, even today? Jean Grégor L’Ombre en soi The ShadowS WIthIn Automne 1980, Jérôme Demortelle débarque à la capitale. Autumn, 1980. Twenty-year-old Jerome Demortelle has just arrived in the French capital. New to the music business and passionate about new wave, his ideas and his attire are befittingly attuned to those of his contemporaries. Indeed, theirs is a generation bent on doing away with the overshadowing presence of their elders, and the hippie movement of the sixties. But the young man is also influenced by an old-fashioned dream: “conquering Paris” and earning the artistic renown of his illustrious predecessors. Things in the capital are not quite what he expected, however. The myth doesn’t somehow add up to reality, and Jerome, in a big hurry as always, isn’t able to avoid the pitfalls: getting in to trendy clubs–or being turned away, humiliated–takes on existential proportions for him; his penchant for cocaine, what is more, has him convinced he’s a big deal in the club scene when, in reality, he is merely a bystander. The author recounts both a game of pretenses and the making of the world that has become our own. With The Shadows Within, Jean Grégor gives himself a momentous literary task: to understand the killer who had aborted the plan to assassinate his father. Grégor remembers his teenage years, spent with his family in a house near Paris. But there were also the anonymous phone calls and the unannounced visitors from either Africa or the French police intelligence service. His father, Pierre Péan, was an independent reporter whose investigations were starting to stir up trouble. A certain Jean-Michel was hired to create a convenient “accident”. But the contract didn't go through, and Péan's life was spared. Apparently these things happen, are occupational hazards, so to speak. The fact that Péan managed to get in touch with his would-have-been hit man, Jean-Michel, and that the two of them became friends at a later date was much more unusual, however! The writer in Jean Grégor couldn't let such an unconventional friendship pass him by. z Novelist Benoît Duteurtre is a music critic for the magazine Marianne. While getting his estate in order, David Blair, the last scion of a long line of Scottish publishers, discovers a treasure that just may enable him to save his family home: a map, circa 1881, allegedly drawn by Robert Louis Stevenson while working on his famous Treasure Island. There is more to the enigmatic document than meets the eye, however. David hands it over to the experts and sets sail for the Hebrides to get some air. He docks at the tiny island of Fara, home to a scattering of locals he immediately takes a shine to: an innkeeper “of insidious charms”, a French aviator who had landed on the island for emergency repairs–and had never left–and a fly-fishing vicar, to name a few. Each is a more gifted story-teller than the last. Much to his surprise, the news of his discovery touches a particular chord with the islanders, fed on stories of shipwreck and revenge, raising, namely, the specter of the fabulous wealth of the Spanish Armada. Almost unwittingly, David finds himself caught up in an unlikely adventure, and this in spite of the satellites, the economic restrictions and the safety norms of the world today! At the age of fifteen, Raymond decides to become the next Hemingway, come what may. And to make the short story his genre of predilection. He has big plans for himself and his whole life ahead of him. His hometown? Yakima, a corner of the American Northwest. Nowheresville, that is to say. Marianne, a waitress at a doughnut shop, is in awe of Ray’s enormous ambitions. “It was the most thrilling thing I’d ever heard. ’You can count on me, Ray,’ I informed him with unblinking confidence.” A few months later, the teenagers are married. Marianne is pregnant and Raymond has yet to start drinking. In the meantime Douglas has been given the job of his dreams: he is an editor at a prestigious literary magazine. The short stories sent to the review irritate him no end, however, like a nasty skin rash. So he gets out his editorial scissors and begins cutting, rewriting and shaping to soothe his itch. “It’s the author’s voice, I say, the author’s voice. But it’s my signature.” When Ray and Douglas meet at last, Ray has been perfecting the art of drinking for about ten years; Marianne has been supporting the household. 2008) is a major author of twentieth century French literature, one of the most powerful voices, namely, of the Nouveau Roman. 18 Alain Robbe-Grillet meets Catherine Rstakian in the summer of 1951. Very much in love, jealous, and at times hypocritical, he begins sending her impassioned declarations of love. Forced to hide their liaison from Catherine’s friends and family, the lovers are forced to resort to tricks to meet each other at cafes or hotels. They are married in October 1957 but continue their correspondence. The love letters, which reveal a very sentimental Alain Robbe-Grillet, are full of information about his literary career, the Nouveau Roman and his publisher, Jérôme Lindon. As for Catherine Robbe-Grillet, a theater actress at the start of her career, we discover a film buff and an opera and theater lover, as well as an avid reader and a staunch supporter of her companion’s work. Over the course of the years, she will willingly recall the people she saw, or seduced, and will recount her first steps as an author under the pen name of Jeanne de Berg. The present work brings to life a colorful era of artists, writers, filmmakers, translators and academics, through the story of one of France’s most engaging and humorous literary couples. An original new voice in the world of French crime fiction. 30 One January morning, in the Hermitage forest, Marianne Gil awakes to the sound of fists pounding on her door. It is her friend Joe, terrified. He has just made a gruesome discovery near the old barn towards the back of her property: a young girl’s lifeless body. They immediately alert the authorities. Inspector Francis Humbert is put in charge of the investigation. The initial findings confirm that the victim had been strangled. But nothing is discovered to establish her identity. Or why she was in the woods near the hermitage in the dead of winter. Or who killed her… The mysterious Marianne is a recluse, a famous writer with a deeply-buried secret that years of silence and solitude have not been able to erase. Inspector Humbert finds himself under the spell of her savage beauty, her disconcerting vulnerability and charm. The two soon form an unspoken symbiotic pact. Humbert will do anything to protect Marianne from her past, which has just resurfaced. He initially went down in history–after battling censorship for twenty years–for his extraordinary Encyclopedia, the world’s first compendium of scientific progress and ideas. Such a psychological premise doesn’t make sense, however. Indeed, Jews and non-Jews alike would attempt to examine the singularity of the genocide immediately following the war, while members of France’s intellectual elite would make a number of forceful public statements between 1945 and 1950. Then came the novelists, filmmakers and playwrights of the 1950's and 1960’s, who would continue to inform the French public, which–no– was not in for a rude awakening in June of 1967 when the Six Day War broke out. On the contrary, the tragic events of the war were abundantly clear to the French at the time. In an unprecedented systematic analysis of French writings and publications on the Holocaust, from 1945 through the present day, François Azouvi tackles the myth of repression favored by certain Holocaust historians and demonstrates the French public’s acute awareness of the tragedy of the genocide. With the tiny nation going through a crisis similar to that of the European Union– whose Commission is in Brussels–how can Belgium find a common political vision for linguistic communities of extremely diverse, if not opposing, social, economic and cultural characteristics? Yet, in spite of recent unprecedented crises, this multinational federation of 10 million inhabitants, a model of institutional complexities, has succeeded in securing the coexistence of Walloon, Flemish and German speakers, refuting the prognostics of the country’s impending breakup. Leading specialists of Belgium here give us a clear and accurate portrait of the country organized along four major lines of thought: political, institutional, social and cultural. Resolutely optimistic about the future of Belgium, the authors put the country’s democracy to a multinational and multilingual test, analyzing the effectiveness and the appropriateness of the Belgian constitution, assessing the role of Belgium within the European Union and sounding the collective memory of the Belgian people. And why did our ancestors make them in caves often remote and difficult to access? Why, what is more, did they make drawings that were almost identical in nature for over thirty thousand years? Obviously, there must be some important reason why. The artist comes up with a theory all his own and undertakes a collaboration with a scientist in order to test it. Experiments are conducted, sometimes under the same conditions as those of our distant ancestors; all are conclusive beyond their wildest dreams. Perhaps even the meaning of the drawings will be revealed in the end. The pair of authors of the present work are entirely self-taught in the field of paleontology. Indeed, humanity today both fears solitude and is fascinated by it, as seen in our pursuit of solitary accomplishments and our ever growing isolation. What is more, the face-off between individualism and the herd instinct, between isolation and socializing, has taken on even greater proportions with the advent of modern communication technologies and social networks. Yet the history of solitude can be traced back to Antiquity, whose intellectuals saw man as both a social animal and a lover of bucolic charms. “It is not good that man should be alone,” the Bible says, even though Judeo-Christianity extols the solitary lives of hermits and monks. In the 19th century, the Romantics would sing the praises of solitude and flee the cities, just as today's “solos” tout the benefits of independence; the loneliness of the elderly continues to be seen as a scourge, however. The fact is, solitude is both a refuge and a curse— one of the greatest paradoxes of the human condition retraced in the present book. Subsequently, German operatives would infiltrate Foreign Legion ranks in order to weaken the force’s esprit de corps by diffusing nationalist, Communist and Nazi ideas, successively. The text in question was written by a famous historian, what is more, in the manner of a late19th century transcription of a public school course taught at a small village. The text reveals, better than any archive material ever could, what could have been said in such a context. Are historians no longer sticklers for facts, ready to accept whatever happens to confirm what they already know and teach? “How should we talk to children?” adults often wonder, and rightly so. Because in order to connect with children verbally, we must first regard them as persons in their own right, as intelligent beings able to understand what we are saying. Yet at the same time we must not take them for–nor let them take themselves for–adults. It is a tricky business, in other words, and one specific to the present day. Indeed, our understanding of children in regards to development is the result of a long historical process. Claude Halmos retraces the major steps of how our perception of children has evolved up through the present day. Along the way she looks at some of the things that children need to know, and others that, on the contrary, they need to be protected from. She explains how to connect “on the level of the child,” with words that neither infantilize nor take the child for an adult. Halmos also responds to the questions of children and teenagers in a monthly column for Psychologies Magazine, concrete examples, appended here, of how to respond “on the level of the child.” Anthropologist, pricing specialist, expert in artificial intelligence, Paul Jorion examines the possibilities of replacing capitalism, hardly a simple question given the fact that the current crisis is in reality a particularly toxic combination of three: the first stemming from mankind’s slovenly treatment of the planet; the second related to the uncontrollable complexity of today’s world; and the third resulting from the fact that our societies are governed by “machines for concentrating wealth”. Consequently, it is impossible to respond to the question of replacing capitalism without answering a series of complex questions. For example, why are we content with an economic “science” unable to predict a financial crisis on the scale of the one we are currently engulfed in–and that seems incapable of advocating the measures needed to bring it to an end? Or how can the wealth created by the capitalistic system be more equitably distributed? In other words, before a substitute for capitalism can be determined, a good number of questions remain to be answered. The hold-up, that notorious form of stick-em-up robbery that first appeared in the United States following the Revolutionary War, speaks volumes about the two-hundred year old history of capitalistic society. Formerly a small-scale enterprise carried out in defiance of the system–in spite of the film industry's heroic representations of public enemy #1 and the “biggest hold-up of the century”–hold-ups today have gone mainstream. Indeed, at the very heart of capitalism itself, hold-ups take place on a daily basis in both our banks–with their teams of “deregulators” who propagated subprimes while raking in millions–and businesses, which strive to provoke market disruptions, or hold-ups, in order to corner the market and create monopolies, such as Apple or Google… The film industry is largely responsible for today's overriding paradigm of values that regulate our global society of instant everything. Who today doesn't dream of making it big, if only to ward off the specter of financial insecurity? Paul Vacca takes a thought-provoking look at the history of capitalism in an original study of the films, crises and news items of society today. Indeed, Foucault’s analysis of neoliberalism and his reading of its principle theoreticians caused quite a disturbance: what if Foucault had converted to liberalism at the end of his life? Tackling the writings of an intellectual left that has unanimously condemned neoliberal thinkers as being responsible for most of society’s problems today, Geoffroy de Lagasnerie sheds light on Foucault’s views. The neoliberal tradition is a critical instrument for taking on reality and theory that can lead to a new way of thinking; neoliberalism is not a form of conservatism but an innovative and Utopian current of thought offering extremely powerful tools for escaping Marxism, political philosophies, State doctrine and psychology. In other words, Foucault believed that the art of insubordination could be reinvented through a rereading of neoliberalism. Pierre Legendre endeavors to identify, name and describe– beyond the specific case of the Western world–the fundamental anthropological structures, or the societal cement, that hold together human communities. In 2011 and 2012, he gave two unprecedented lectures on the foundations of what he will call the Fiduciary. In the first, he explains why we need to distance ourselves from the worn out Western concept of “religion”, a construct that he believes not only obscures the true functioning of society but that nurtures misunderstanding among people. Indeed, only after the obstacle of the word “religion” has been done away with can we reflect upon the forms that have always stood guarantor for humanity and that have allowed us, what is more, to establish arenas of both lawfulness and speech. In the second lecture, he examines the way the West has raised and responded to the question of “What is Governance?”–a reflection on the history of the West, in its entirety, framed by societies the world over through the prism of their manifold traditions. Globalization is not merely a system of financial transactions and exchanged goods. It is shored up by an invisible foundation that is difficult for most Westerners to comprehend: the concepts we convey through Western words, word-concepts that are easily translated from one European language to another but that have no equivalent in other linguistic arenas. Faced with the West’s linguistic domination of the world, the present work examines how nine word-concepts are apprehended in nine non-Western languages. The book’s contributing scholars brilliantly demonstrate the complexities of communicating on a global scale, exposing the fundamental problems of Western representations– repressed by the doxa of the Euro-American culture–that confront, and ultimately steamroll, human beings throughout the world. Next comes the second phase of the Hero’s quest: his confrontation with power. Therefore, opera is more than the mere celebration of desire: it is the enactment of our fascination with power. Orpheus, the musician searching for Eurydice in the Underworld, is opera’s archetypical hero. One of opera’s founding works– Monteverdi’s 1607 Orfeo–is based on his story. April 2012 Mille et Une Nuits 100 pages World Rights Film & TV Rights Rights Sold : Italian (Archinto) The Last Model and Muse is the untold story of Caroline, Alberto Giacometti’s last model, a kindhearted bargirl and prostitute and a fixture of the Montparnasse art scene throughout the 1950's and 1960's. It is also the story of Giacometti’s all-consuming passion for her, his lover and muse for six years, until his death in 1966. Novelist and art specialist Franck Maubert gives us an intensely poetic narrative exploring the relationship of the artist and his model, offset by the murky dealings of both the art world and the underworld players. The author gives us a deeply personal yet objective account of his meeting with Caroline at her studio overlooking the sea in Nice. As the former model’s memories rise to the surface, we discover both the portrait of a woman, deeply-marred and fragile, and the hidden face of the artist whose Walking Man would become the most expensive work of art ever sold at an auction. z Franck Maubert is the author Franck Maubert z Franck Maubert est écrivain.
