“Naked Opera” tells the story of a man with many faces. Marc is talented, intelligent, eloquent and wealthy but has suffered from an incurable illness from childhood. He considers himself to be a kind of Don Giovanni from Luxembourg and is permanently on the lookout for the perfect staging for his life and the perfect production of his favourite opera. Each weekend he escapes his everyday haute bourgeois life by travelling the world in search of the ultimate “Don Giovanni” performance. Marc surrounds himself with beautiful young men, stays at the best hotels in the world, and enjoys the pleasures of decadence. Director Angela Christlieb accompanies Marc on a journey from Luxembourg to Venice during which Marc falls in love with a young porno actor. In “Naked Opera” she succeeds in making a confrontational as well as intimate portrait of a tragic and fascinating person. “Naked Opera” is visually impressive - a film immersed in both a brilliant intellect and a hedonistic universe. I have always been interested in dream and parallel worlds. In my previous films I have often been concerned with people who live in their self-invented “imaginary” worlds and, by doing so, question (the norms of) society. What interested me right from the beginning about NAKED OPERA were the contrasts and contradictions between Marc as a real person and the illusory space he created for himself. It is about beauty and ugliness, power and submission, truth and lies, wealth and poverty (dependence), young, well-trained bodies versus illness and death. There could be no better location for the story than Luxembourg, a country between romantic, fairy-story castle idyll and super-cooled business charm. But above all of it is the person of Marc, who has transformed himself into a fictional character and is a complete contradiction in himself. Life as a game aka self-deception, while at the same time there is a deep-seated desire for love and security which cannot be bought for all the money in the world. Here lies Marc’s biggest contradiction: “I play the biggest role in my own life,” he said to me. I believe that deep down he feels his permanent self-deception and wishes for nothing more than to be loved for what he is and a partner who is honest with him. Marc told me that he fell in love with porn star Jordan Fox because he had never pretended to be anything other than he was. That must have been a very important quality for him having paid for so many escort boys to pretend. The love story with Jordan is a thread that runs through the whole film. Here is where Marc the power-seeker shows his real face because he suddenly loses control and is in the weaker position. For me the figure of Marc embodies many psychological and ethical issues - power games and submission, Sadomasochism, childhood traumas, betrayal, revenge, jealousy — some of them are the themes in Don Giovanni. Above all, though, it is about a man who is marked by his illness and who pays for “love” in order to escape his lo- 11 Marc hasst die Idee, als Todesgetriebener (à la Tod in Venedig) dargestellt zu werden. Marc hates the idea of being seen as someone driven by death (à la Death in Venice). Even if the opera sentences Don Giovanni to perish, Marc’s end should be quite different: some form of self-awareness or a possible solution to the puzzle. There are three long journeys to Don Giovanni performances: Venice, Vienna, Berlin - three different cities that provide beautifully contrasting images. The travelling per se, the movement, is taken up in such a way, both filmically and musically, that the film develops a gravitational pull. I want to make a documentary film that plays with reality and, at the same time, asks questions. One learns of Marc’s deepest feelings in the form of interviews and also sees staged scenes into which real events will be woven. The film functions as a game with identities between dream and reality and is sometimes structures like a puzzle. The images in the film will be filmed in such a way that they suggest paintings. The camera functions as an observer, like a quiet, intimate gaze through a keyhole. Marc’s home is both his stage and his aquarium-like glass shelter. I play with the painting-like image level, freezing the action as if it was a film still or a painting. The pictorial level also generates a game with the levels of reality but simultaneously the disappearance of one’s own identity too. . Real scenes merge into surreal dream sequences which are then broken: Actor Ingmar Skrinjar plays the embodiment of the “stone guest” in the form of a nude statue. The scene ends with the statue jumping down from its pedestal and covering Marc’s expensive coat in dust.Excerpts from Joseph Losey’s „Don Giovanni“ form a second level and will be inserted into the action by parallel editing so that analogies are created to Marc and Jordan’s seduction story. How did you become involved in the film and where did the idea of making a film about Marc Rollinger come from? The original idea was not mine. There was already a finished screenplay that had been developed by a number of people including Philipp Reimer. Philipp is from Luxembourg and met Marc at a Don Giovanni performance at the Berlin Opera. They liked each other immediately and found out that they had things in common. Both of them come from Luxembourg, love opera and have their birthdays on International Women’s Day. Philipp thought Marc‘s story was so exciting that he began to write a screenplay, together with Patricia Fuerst. At the 2011 Diagonale I met producer Bady Minck. She sent me a synopsis of the film and asked me how I liked it. I was immediately enthusiastic about it. My first reaction was that I would certainly go and see it when it was released. A little later she asked if I would direct it. I dropped everything and within days had moved from Vienna to Luxembourg. Having arrived there, I was involved in intensive research with Marc, did further work on the screenplay, and began to shoot quite soon after that. What fascinated you about the material and the person? I was fascinated right from the start by the fact that it is a very unusual story. It takes place in a world to which I normally have no access. The world of luxury and expensive hotels in conjunction with opera and escort boys. In contrast, there is Marc, a person who has to deal with an incurable autoimmune disease that overshadows his life. Despite that, he falls in love with a porn actor. Right from the beginning it was a very intense subject for me, with various facets and levels. What interested me most was the parallel worlds in which Marc moved. I wanted to get to know them. Although I’m not a great opera connoisseur, Don Giovanni is a very captivating figure because he has power over others and they succumb to him. When one knows Marc a little better it is clear why he identifies with this opera in particular. He needs the game of power and control over others like he needs air to breathe. Ça me plait et je l´admire pour ça. only have to do with his illness although it is an important factor because he does not want to let affliction make him into an underdog. He is completely aware that his self-staging and outing provokes others. But he has enough self-irony to enjoy the extreme reactions. I like that, and admire him for it. The film consists of a number of stations. Where to they come from? Were these places in the screenplay that had been arranged with Marc, or were they chosen spontaneously during the shooting? In other words, how did it come about that you travelled with Marc across the whole of Europe? Marc’s passion is travelling to wherever there is a Don Giovanni performance and inviting the young “escorts” he meets there to accompany him. His journeys take him all over Europe, though not, however, further afield. Because of his illness, long flights would be too risky. There were originally other places in the screenplay but I had to adapt to the cities in which there were Don Giovanni performances during the period we were shooting. In any case I wanted to shoot in Venice because the city is visually so spectacular and it “belongs” to Don Giovanni because sequences of Joseph Losey’s „Don Giovanni“ also play in Venice. We were lucky that there were also performances in Vienna and Berlin. There were other cities where performances of Don Giovanni were taking place, but I concentrated on Venice, Vienna and Berlin. For me, these three cities were a very nice contrast because they are so different. You and your camera team are very present in the film. Sometimes one has the feeling that you intervened in the events and provoked certain situations. This distinguishes your film from a classic documentary that tends to be more observational or 19 hast du das Geschehen tatsächlich gesteuert? l´observation ou l´interrogation. To what extent did you really steer events? It was not planned from the beginning that the film team and I would be seen in the film, On the contrary. At the beginning I did not want to be present at all, not even as an off-camera voice. Then the shooting developed in the direction that Marc wanted to have complete control over the film. He wanted to decide what was to be shot, which led to certain conflictual situations. If he didn’t get his way, he threatened refusal. Shooting with Marc was a great challenge for me. In order to elicit reactions and “real” feelings from him, I had to surprise him with scenes, to divert him. One simple trick was to invite young and attractive men to visit him and always to have enough champagne in the fridge. That led him to forget his self-staging and need to control for a while and to become himself. During the editing, it turned out that this power game between him and the film team had become an important part of the film and it had to be addressed. In the first version edit I had already included a couple of these moments. The audience reaction was so positive that we strengthened this side of the film. Your film conveys a very strong feeling of voyeurism. How much of that was intentional? Au contraire: je voulais regarder derrière la Headword voyeurism: that is a crucial question for every documentary film. Probably specially so for this film because the audience gets the feeling of being able to look right into Marc’s bedroom. But one mustn’t forget that that bedroom is a stage, and Marc is the director there. The camera is his mirror and film his medium. It may be that those who find the film voyeuristic are right in this limited sense. It was never my goal to expose him. On the contrary, I wanted to look behind the facade of the person Marc is and to show his vulnerable and very human side that exists despite his self-staging and power games. You work a lot with visual devices such as time lapse, edits etc. How much did you intervene in the film, in the narrative, by doing that? And can one say that they are interventions at all? I don’t see the visual elements of style that I use—time lapse, jump cuts or picture in picture montage—as intervening in the narrative. I regarded them more as a means of artistic expression, as a possibility to work with various levels of time and perception. Right from the start I had the idea that the film should shift between reality and staging, just as there are shifts between the artificial Marc figure and the real one. I wanted to create illusory spaces and use visual stylistic devices to move around in these spaces. For instance, I montaged images of hospital doors through which Marc was passing together with pictures of the Luxembourg pavilion at the Venice Biennial. Marc walks though a glass room into a white room with surreal furniture that has broken legs. In this way associational spaces are suggested that can irritate the viewer. They describe a psychological state that is created using only editing and sound. It may well look like intervening in reality but I don’t think that documentary filmmakers have to be strict and dogmatic. They don’t have to depict reality 1:1. I think they can allow themselves more freedom to play with different levels of reality. At this point I would like to express my thanks to my production company, AMOUR FOU, and to Bady Minck who, because of her artistic approach, encouraged me to work experimentally. This also includes the Film Fund Luxemburg that made that freedom possible, and my editor, Pia Dumont. 23 LUXEMBOURG MARC‘S FRIENDS Marc’s bed: Nilton Martins (actor) Marc’s flat:Miikka Heinonen (artist commissioned by Marc) Hotel restuarant (Sofitel): Maurice Humbert (Concierge Privé) Hotel restuarant (Sofitel): Jocelyne and Michel Soutiran (champagne producer) Marc’s flat: Jan-Holger Mauss (a long-standing friend of Marc, artist) Hotel restaurant (Sofitel): Marc Clement (a long-standing friend of Marc) Hal Flavin (band): Mike Koster, Samuel Reinard, Marc Clement Hospital: Dr. Häussler (Marc’s doctor) MARC‘S QUOTES “I think that the protagonist is a pompous arsehole. The whole thing is a waste of tax payers’ money.” “The problem with our society is it’s always I, I, I and it should be all about me, me, me.” “I would really like to have the libretto to it.” “It is always better to have clean hands in Luxembourg.
