PLAYHOUSE ANNOUNCES FIRST FRENCH PERFORMANCE
JAKE’S GIFT French Performance – Saturday July 19, 8pm
GANANOQUE, ON – The Thousand Islands Playhouse is proud to offer their first French performance!
Originally written and performed by Julia Mackey in English, Jake’s Gift was recently translated to French by
Gilles Poulin-Denis with support from a Canada Council grant. Julia Mackey will perform the show in French at
the Thousand Islands Playhouse on Saturday, July 19 at 8pm.
"I was inspired to learn Jake's Gift in French because I wanted to be able to perform the play in Normandy one
day. We feel very lucky that we got to do that twice this past June during the 70th Anniversary of D-Day
ceremonies,” explains Julia Mackey. “It was a dream come true to perform Le Cadeau de Jake for the local
citizens of Bernières-Sur-Mer. It was a very moving experience we won't soon forget, and we hope to go back
next year. There were a lot of French Canadian Soldiers who served in the Second World War and who landed
on D-Day as well, and so that is another reason it was important to me to learn the play in both French and
English."
Jake’s Gift is a moving and powerful tribute to our veterans. While revisiting the shores of Juno beach for the
60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings, World War II veteran Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-yearold girl from the local village. Her inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to make peace with
his past. This one-woman show features four characters, all performed by playwright/performer Julia Mackey,
with Direction/Stage Management by Dirk Van Stralen and Lighting Design by Gerald King.
“We are so excited to branch out with new offerings at the Thousand Islands Playhouse,” says Artistic Director
Ashlie Corcoran. “Earlier this season, we offered our first American Sign Language interpreted performance,
and now we’re thrilled to offer our first French performance. We are constantly challenging ourselves to be
more accessible and reach new audiences, and we’re excited that our efforts are being received so well!”
Show Times: Jake’s Gift English performances are every Tuesday - Sunday at 8pm with matinees every Friday
& Saturday at 2:30pm. Every Friday evening, audiences are invited to stay for a free guest speaker series in

LE CADEAU DE JAKE (JAKE’S GIFT)
Le Théâtre 1000 Mille Îles à Gananoque (The Thousand Islands Playhouse)
