EXPLORE SOUTHWEST FRANCE WITH ITS UNIQUE WHITE WINES
EXPLORE SOUTHWEST FRANCE WITH ITS UNIQUE WHITE WINES THIS SUMMER you can invigorate your wine-drinking by enjoying refreshing white wines that are not made from “the same old grapes” but which pair very well with a variety of foods. THE WHITE WINES of Southwest France, readily available in better wine shops and online, can treat you not only to great tastes, but also new wine experiences. When was the last time you tasted a wine made from Arrufiac, Courbu, Gros Manseng, Mauzac or Loin de L’oeil grapes? These are the intriguing, historic grapes of legendary wine regions such as the Côtes de Gascogne, Saint Mont, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and Gaillac, whose names are prominently displayed on the bottle labels. Côtes de Gascogne, known by many Americans as the home of the Three Musketeers, produces more white wine that finds its way to the United States than any other region of Southwest France. Most of it is crisp and tangy – great for all sort of appetizers and seafood – and is made from a combination of native grapes, such as Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Gros and Petit Manseng, blended with international varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The native grapes are also used to make Gascony’s other famous drink – Armagnac brandy. Try a Côtes de Gascogne producer today: Domaine du Tariquet Classique, Domaine de Pouy, Domaine de Pellehaut, Domaine des Cassagnoles, Plaimont Producteurs “Colombelle” Saint Mont-This appellation lies in the Pyrenees foothills, in the heart of Southwest France, between Toulouse and the Atlantic. These vines range from 30 to 150 years of age. Wet winters followed by mild damp springs and hot summers produces a crisp well balanced, with citrus and yellow fruit flavored white wine. The terroir of Saint Mont contains pebbly and compact clay soils which add minerality to Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Petit Courbu, and Arrufiac grapes. Goat cheese is often paired with these crisp whites. logo IVSO Quadri Try a Saint Mont producer today: Plaimont Producteurs “Les Bastions” Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh (not as hard to pronounce as it For more information on white wines of Southwest France: www.winesofsouthwestfrance.com @WinesofSouthwestFrance @WinesofSWFrance For samples, imagery, or interviews, contact: Marie-Christina Batich Public relations Manager Sopexa USA 212-386-7416 [email protected] Christophe Logeais Communication & Marketing Interprofession des Vins du Sud-Ouest France +011 05 61 73 87 06 [email protected] About: might look–“PASH-err-ONK” will do) is the companion region to the red-producing Madiran. Three grapes, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng and Courbu can be found in the region. These medium-sweet wines, lush in texture, go well with spicy foods. The dry whites are great with chicken and light summer pasta salads. Try a Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh producer today: Domaine Berthoumieu Gaillac is located inland near the large regional city of Toulouse. This region produces a complete variety of red, sparkling and both dry and sweet whites made from combinations of Loin de L’oeil, Mauzac, Ondenc, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. The classic dry whites, including Gaillac Perle, often have a little effervescence, which makes them great wines to sip with appetizers, including ham. The more-structured and fragrant Gaillac Premieres Côtes wines are great with cheeses, grilled fish and various poultry. There are two types of Gaillac sweet wines: late harvest wine and classic sweet wine. The late harvest wines have flavors of quince, dried figs, honey, and candied fruit. The classic sweet wines have flavors of ripe apples, pears, and exotic fruits. Bubbly Gaillac wines are made only from Mauzac white grapes, which are also great summer refreshers. Try a Gaillac producer today: Domaine Philemon, Domaine des Terrisses, Domaine Plageoles Mauzac Nature (sparkling), Domaine des Causse Marines REGARDLESS of whether you are enjoying the summer at home or on vacation at the beach or in the mountains, the white wines of Southwest France offer you great drinking and great exploration.
