LA PENTECÔTE
Comme les désirs de puissance et de conquête, Dieu nous offre son
Désir : l'Esprit Saint, qui est communion et harmonie. Laissons-le convertir notre propre
désir pour l'unir à celui de Dieu. Laissons-le convertir notre regard et nos gestes pour
qu'ils deviennent services.
Pentecôte, c'est l'irruption de l'Esprit Saint dans l'histoire des hommes.
L'action de l'Esprit Saint dans l'Église et en chacun de nous est réelle et efficace.
L'Esprit nous éclaire . . . Il communique le feu vital de l'Amour . . . Puissions-nous
l'accueillir comme les apôtres.

PENTECOST – MAY 15, 2016
Pentecost Sunday is often called the birthday of the Church. For the ancient
Israelites, Pentecost (meaning 'fiftieth') was a harvest festival celebrated fifty days after
the harvesting of the first sheaf. When the Jerusalem temple was built, this harvest
festival was transformed into a pilgrimage feast to celebrate the covenant that Israel had
made with God on Mt Sinai. The Jews of the first century, including Christian Jews
celebrated the great pilgrimage feast of Pentecost. Several decades after the death of
Jeus, the early Christians reflected on their origins and chose this feast to mark the birth
of God's new covenant with God's people.
In today's First Reading, Luke tells the new Pentecost story in symbolic language
that evokes the story of Moses and the people of Israel receiving God's Law on Mt. Sinai.
Just as God's presence to Israel was marked by earthquake and thunder and fire, so
God's Spirit enveloping the people of the new covenant appears in a mighty rush of wind
and tongues of fire. Luke's account also evokes early rabbinic teaching that the voice of
God on Sinai divide into seventy tongues and all the nations received the Law in their
own tongues. In other words, the dispersion and division created by the hubris of those
who built the Tower of Babel is symbolically reversed in this pouring out of God's Spirit.
In John's Gospel, the risen Christ appears to the disciples who are huddled
behind locked doors. He offers the simple greeting: “Peace be with you”, the greeting we
offer each other at every Eucharistic celebration. He sends them on a mission of peace in
continuity with his own God-inspired mission. He breathes on them the gift of the Holy
Spirit and tells them that God will forgive those whom they forgive, and will “retain” or
“seize hold of” the transgressions of those whose sins or transgressions they “retain”.
To seize hold of evil-doing is to expose it and deal with it. Sometimes it is best
to forgive and simply allow everyone to move on. In other situations, amnesty only
exacerbates the problems. Much of the enduring conflict in our world derives from the
inability of ordinary people and of leaders to know how to deal with transgression. The
Holy Spirit is the unique source of our power to forgive, of our power to refrain from
vengeance, and of our capacity to deal with or “seize hold of” the sins of the perpetrators
of violence and abuse in our church and in our world.
LA PENTECÔTE – 15 mai 2016 - Le souffle de Jésus
Geste promis, geste accompli. Jésus avait promis à ses amis de leur envoyer
le Saint-Esprit. Il le leur envoie au jour de la Pentecôte.
« Esprit Saint, c'est toi qui mets l'amour dans nos cœurs. C'est toi qui fais
comprendre la Parole de Dieu, et qui nous fais prier. C'est toi qui nous donnes la paix
et la joie à la manière de Jésus.
Gloire à toi, Esprit de Dieu. Je t'aime et te remercie.
Ainsi donc, viens, Esprit Saint, allume en nous le feu de ton amour. Viens
changer le cœur de tous les gens de la terre pour qu'ils bâtissent un monde meilleur.
Viens encore, Esprit de Jésus, donne-moi la chance de découvrir ta Parole.
Parle en mon cœur pour prier le Père comme il faut. Envahis mon cœur de ta paix et
de ta joie, que je ne connaisse plus la tristesse. Et de mon cœur, rayonne ta
merveilleuse présence. »
Avant d'être une force, une lumière, l'Esprit Saint c'est quelqu'un, c'est une
personne. Quelqu'un qui est présent en nous, en chacun de nous. Quelqu'un à qui je
peux m'adresser en tout temps, parce que c'est quelqu'un. Cette personne, en complicité
avec nous, agit pour nous faire faire tout ce qui est bien de faire. « Sans moi, vous ne
pouvez rien faire », dit Jésus.
Ce que l'Esprit Saint produit, c'est l'amour les uns pour les autres, c'est la joie,
c'est la paix intérieure et la paix avec ceux qu'on retrouve près de soi, c'est la patience,
la bienveillance, la bonté, la fidélité, la douceur, et la maîtrise de soi (Galates, 5, 22-23).
Le souffle de Dieu, c'est quelqu'un. Voilà pourquoi au début de ce billet de
réflexion, je me suis adressé à lui.
