February Half-Term 2014
PS and MS
Nous avons eu le plaisir
d’accueillir dans nos classes
trois nouveaux élèves ; Diane
et Sarah en petite section, et
Nikola en moyenne section ;
nous leur souhaitons tous la
bienvenue !
En petite section, nous avons
continué à l’écriture des
prénoms et tous les élèves
ont fait d’énormes progrès.
Bravo à tous !
Ces dernières semaines,
nous avons travaillé sur le
thème de l’ours, en lisant
quelques albums comme « La
chasse à l’ours ».
En moyenne section, nous
avons travaillé sur le thème
de la galette, en étudiant
l’album « Roule galette ».
Nous nous sommes bien
amusés à lire ce livre, et à
imiter les voix des animaux
qui essaient de manger la
galette !
Toujours, sur le thème de la
galette, nous avons fabriqué
de jolies couronnes que nous
avons pu ramener à la
maison.
Nous avons continué notre
travail d’écriture des lettres,
et des chiffres, et nous avons
énormément progressé !
En février, toute l’école a pu
participer à une journée sur
le thème de l’Afrique, et tous
les enfants ont pu danser sur
des musiques africaines, et
taper sur des percussions,
c’était très amusant !
Nous avons d’ailleurs
préparé un petit spectacle
que nous allons bientôt
présenter aux autres élèves
de l’école !

PS and MS
This term the children in
PS/MS have continued to be
happy and engaged learners.
In PS we have practised
writing our names in a
variety of fun ways, using
letter puzzles, magnetic
letters, stamps, letter
sponges or name
caterpillars.
To develop our speaking and
listening skills we have
introduced daily « Show and
Tell » sessions that have
become really popular. We
have continued learning
numbers, colours, songs and
rhymes. We have talked
about what clothes to wear
in the winter and what food
is good or bad for our teeth.
During free play the children
have continued to enjoy
dressing up and playing with
our train track.
We also learnt about
Chinese New Year, watched
the Dragon and Lion dance
and celebrated by making
Chinese lanterns and dragon
chains.
We have also been talking
about the importance of
personal hygiene and how to
wash our hands correctly.
Miss K and Miss Parks
covered our hands in finger
paint and stuck « germs » on
top. We then had to go to the
bathroom, wash our hands
and the germs away.
In MS, the children are
really enjoying learning their
letter sounds and are
beginning to use their
sounds in reading and
writing.
This term we have been
reading The Gingerbread
Man. We painted and
decorated our own
gingerbread man and we
have been making our own
books.

GS and CP
In GS we have been reading
books with an African
setting and have used the
books Handa's Hen and We
All Went on Safari as
inspiration for writing our
own counting stories. The
African setting of the stories
was brought to life by a visit
from Afrik Entertainment.
In science we have been
learning about Living Things
and conducted an
experiment to discover what
would happen if a plant was
given no water.
In CP we have been
reading The Snail and The
Whale and looking at verbs
in the present and past
tenses. In maths we have
found out more about UK
money and we are now
measuring using metres,
centimetres and even
millimetres. In Science we
have begun our study of
living things by planting
some cress. Hopefully, we
will follow its progress before
taking it home.

En cours de français en GS
nous avons lu deux
nouveaux livres :
Toutes les couleurs et
Rafara
Nous avons travaillé sur les
couleurs, et l'Afrique en lien
avec ces livres et nous
nous sommes entraînés à
quelques mouvements de
danse africaine, ainsi qu'à la
pratique de
percussions (tam-tam,
djembé, …) avec la troupe
d'Afrik Entertainment.
Nous avons également passé
un très long moment à parler
des dangers de la maison et
particulièrement des pièces
comme la cuisine et la salle
de bain.
En cours de français en CP
nous avons étudié un
nouveau livre pour
poursuivre notre
apprentissage de la lecture :
On a volé Jeannot Lapin
En mathématiques, nous
avons continué notre
apprentissage de la suite
numérique jusqu'à 59, nous
avons commencé à effectuer
en ligne et de tête des calculs
plus complexes (à 3, 4 ou 5
termes). Nous allons, en
cette fin de période aborder
un travail sur les euros
(puisqu'en cours d'anglais,
les élèves ont terminé leur
travail sur les livres
sterling).
Comme les GS nous avons
participé aux ateliers de la
troupe d'Afrik
Entertainment à l'occasion
d'une journée spéciale.
Melle Ricard
CE1 and CE2
En CE1, les élèves ont
travaillé en Découverte du
monde sur le thème de la
famille et de la généalogie.
Ils ont chacun réalisé un
arbre généalogique de leur
famille que nous avons
affiché dans le couloir
menant à la classe pour que
tout le monde puisse les
admirer !
En littérature, les CE1 ont
étudié les contes en anglais
et en français : Snow White,
Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, Le
Loup et les sept chevreaux.
En CE2, les élèves
commencent à étudier
l'Antiquité, qui débute avec
la naissance de l'Ecriture.
Les élèves ont fait des
recherches sur internet et
ont présenté à la classe
différents alphabets qui
existent dans le monde
aujourd'hui. Nous avons
affiché leurs recherches dans
la classe.
En littérature, les CE2
étudient le genre fantastique
avec l'Enfant bleu.

Since the Christmas holidays
Year 3 have been very busy!!
In maths we had been
learning to tell the time and
use a calendar (a tricky but
very important skill!) and
have now started learning
about right angles and
polygons. In Literacy we
have been learning how to
write two new writing
genres. Firstly the children
wrote fantastic recounts of
their Christmas adventures.
They all worked fantastically
hard; our Star Writer was
Elyssa! Then we moved on
to writing fairy tales and the
children have been working
towards writing their own
version of Snow White - but
with a twist! (Star Writer
still to come!). Additionally,
we have not so much been
Discovering The World but
our bodies! We had great fun
experimenting with our
senses, tasting and smelling
various foods, and learning
about our teeth using a giant
mouth model.
CE1 and CE2
Year 4 have also been
keeping busy this half term.
In maths we've been
learning to recognise and
draw a variety of more
complex polygons. As in Year
3, our first Literacy lessons
were focused on recounting
our Christmas holidays and
the Star Writer was Oscar!
Since then we have been
working on writing letters,
responding to an advert
requesting more information
about a "bizarre activity in
the Thames". The children
all wrote brilliantly bizarre
letters and I was extremely
impressed by all of their
progress and the level of
work being produced (Star
Writer still to be revealed!).
In science we have been
learning lots about Water.
We made a 'water cycle in a
box' and have decorated the
staircase with our work.

CM1 and CM2
It has been a busy half-term
for both Years 5 and 6. Both
classes wrote recounts about
their Christmas holidays – it
sounded as if everyone had a
very busy if not very restful
time !
In Year 5 the main
concentration in Literacy has
been the fantasy genre. We
started off making ourselves
into aliens for posters and
writing alien name poems.
Then we read the picture
book The Snow Dragon
which we all greatly enjoyed.
We are now in middle of
producing our masterpiece
fantasy stories ! We have
also been learning about the
Hundred Years War and
Joan of Arc. We had great
fun using our iPads to create
shows telling the story of
Joan’s life. We then
presented them to the Year 6
children (who were
extremely jealous !). In
maths we challenged
ourselves with symmetry
and translating shapes using
co-ordinates.
Year 6 have also had a very
busy half-term. We have
begun to study the First
World War in History. In
Literacy we have learning
about detective stories ;
some children have been
reading Nate the Great
CM1 and CM2
and others have been
reading Five on a Treasure
Island. Like the Year 5
children we are now right in
the middle of writing our
own stories. We have also
created posters for our own
detective agencies.

Pendant cette période, les
CM1 ont découvert et
travaillé les fractions
simples. Les différentes
galettes apportées par les
élèves nous ont bien aidé à
comprendre ce concept de
partage en parts égales tout
en nous régalant !
En sciences, nous avons
commencé à comprendre le
fonctionnement du corps
humain par le concept de
digestion des aliments et
nous allons continuer à
découvrir la respiration et la
circulation sanguine.
Les CM2 ont accueilli deux
nouveaux élèves, Sébastien
et Elliot, et ont participé à
un premier défi
mathématiques. Les
gagnantes sont Rita et Alice
avec un score de 49,5. Bravo
à elles !
Camille nous a présenté un
exposé sur un personnage
important : Martin Luther
King Junior le jour du
Martin Luther King Day qui
est le 3e lundi de janvier,
cette année le 20 janvier où
le slogan est «Make the
holiday a day ON, not a day
OFF!»

School
Newspaper
Just a quick thank you to all of
you who supported the first
edition of the children’s
newspaper. We have raised over
£70 which we hope to put
towards buying books for the
library.
Africa Day
Important information
As already mentioned in
several of the class reports,
the children had a fantastic
time at the drumming and
dancing workshops with
Martin and Michael from
Afrik Entertainment. Much
to the children’s amusement,
Michael got all the teachers
dancing in an assembly!

With Michael the children
learnt to put together a
series of different African
dance moves, creating a
“pastiche” African dance. In
drumming Martin taught the
children about call and
response and basic highlife
(from Ghana) rhythms.
Good fun was had by
teachers and children alike.
