Steven James Brown travaille depuis plusieurs
années avec des objets trouvés. Son
approche est avant tout sculpturale et
littérale. Certains sujets tirés de la série «
Wordplay », sont couverts de mots extraits
d’œuvres littéraires et ceci favorise la
compréhension de cet objet. L’artiste
photographie ces sujets avec une lumière
intensément
saturée
qui
évoque
un
synchronisme de nostalgie et de renaissance.
D’ailleurs, la décision de couvrir les objets de
mots, est le fruit d’une longue réflexion de plus
d’un mois. Le choix s’est arrêté sur le roman de
Moby Dick pour l’œuvre des deux baleines,
afin de nous rappeler les narrations
romantiques du passé et qui ont « caché » le
réel massacre subi par ces animaux. De façon
semblable pour la photographie « Black
Stockings », il a choisi d’employer les textes de
Henry Miller comme une deuxième peau pour
le mannequin, objet grandement idéalisé, afin
d’attirer notre attention sur la narration autour
de la femme-objet. À la première lecture, les
photographies sont visuellement captivantes
mais, suite à une lecture plus attentive,
l’histoire est racontée par leur peau. Steven
photographie exclusivement à l’aide d’une
caméra Sinar 4” x 5” et les objets choisis sont
souvent de petite taille, par exemple le sujet
dans “Dashboard Madonna” ne mesure que
quatre pouces en hauteur.
Les photographies de Steven James Brown
figurent parmi plusieurs collections privées en
Grande-Bretagne, aux États-Unis et à travers le
Canada.
Steven James Brown has worked with
found objects for years. His approach is
sculptural and literal. Certain objects,
his “wordplay” series, are covered with
a skin of text taken from works of
literature
that
mediate
our
understanding of the object. He
photographs his objects with intensely
saturated
light,
which
evokes
a
synchronicity of nostalgia and rebirth.
To cover an object with the words he
chooses takes up to one month. He
chose to use Moby Dick as the text for
the two whales in order to remind us of
the romantic narratives of the past that
“covered up’ the real slaughter of the
animals. Similarly, in “Black Stockings”,
he chose to use Henry Miller’s text as a
second skin upon a highly idealized
female mannequin, to bring attention to
objectifying narratives about women. In
all instances the first reading of the
photographs are visually compelling,
and then closer readings reveal the
more storied “skins”. He photographs
exclusively with a large-format 4” x 5”
Sinar camera and the objects chosen
are often quite small. The “Dashboard
Madonna” stands 4” in height.
Steven's photographs can be found in
private collections in Britain, the United
States, and across Canada; also in the
collections of IBM and Cirque du Soleil
