L`école nationale supérieure d`architecture de Paris
L’école nationale
supérieure
d’architecture
de Paris-Belleville
Created in 1969, the National Superior
School of Architecture of ParisBelleville (ENSAPB) comes from the
breakup of the architectural branch of
the National School of Fine Arts (Les
Beaux-Arts de Paris). At the time, a
group of teachers and students decided to break with academism, and
cross-fertilize architecture with other
disciplines in order to raise an awareness of its historical, political and sociological implications.
From the very beginning, the school
established a specific dialogue between pedagogic and scientific projects. Some teachers do theoretical
research at IPRAUS (our research department), alongside their work with
students. Most of them run a professional practice. This gives students
increased insight and awareness of
their future professional responsibility.
Our values
A new building
The school bases its pedagogy on a
core knowledge, common to every
student and an authentic culture of
the architectural project.
Our school moved to a former Pro
fessional High School in 2009, at the
bottom of the Belleville hill, 60 boulevard de la Villette, in the 19th district
of Paris.
The project was designed by JeanPaul Phillipon in association with the
consulting engineer Ingérop The six
buildings altogether offer 14 600 m2 of
surface.

History
Architectural heritage protection and
refurbishing is as important to us as
creation.
We think that the architect’s skills go
beyond the building scale (urban and
territorial planning) but still refer to it.
F
We organize a double degree architect / engineer with CNAM in order
to help students to broaden their
knowledge in construction technology.

We emphasize the social responsibility of the architect.

program
Academic year starts on 1st October.
Second semester starts in March,
and ends beginning of July. If you
come for one semester only, prefer
the first one, your integration in the
school will be easier. Every semester, one week is reserved for exams,
and another one for the presentation
of the architectural project. From
the second year on, you are able to
choose one architectural project studio for the semester, and some optional courses. There is also a core of
compulsory subjects such as theory,
history and construction, the social
sciences and visual arts.
Resit takes place in September.
There is no resit for architectural project studios. Every lecture and project
studio is given in French.
Specialized degrees
Areas of excellence of the school are
found in specialized degrees (DSA) :
- The DSA “Architecture and the urban project” bearing the mention Architecture and Territory, explores the
architectural, urban and landscape
dimension of greater metropolitan
regions.
- The DSA “Architecture and urban
risks” is concerned with issues of
construction, reinforcement and reconstruction within contexts of foreseeable social/environmental risk or
catastrophe.
-The DSA “Architecture and Heritage” addresses issues related to the
preservation and transformation of
existing constructions.
Each of the three programs reinforces
the preparation of the young architects to confront a life of professionnal responsibilities while providing a
solid knowledge in the chosen area
of specialization and enhancing the
candidates’ capacities to produce
relevant original design propositions.
Doctoral degree
With Paris-Malaquais and Marne-laVallée, our school is part of the “Doctoral school for City, Transports and
Territories”, within the Pres “Université Paris-Est”.
With 10 other schools of architecture,
Belleville created the international
doctoral degree “Villard d’Honnecourt”.

Research
Students societies
International exchanges
The Ipraus (the Paris Institute of
Research in Architecture, Urbanism
and Society) was created in 1986, in
association with the CNRS (National
Center for Scientific Research).
The laboratory is directed by JeanPhilippe Garric.
Asso B
Every year, we receive about 90 international students, while 70 students from Belleville study abroad.
Belleville has partnerships with 47
schools in Europe, and 14 in the rest
of the world.
Students from our school on exchange are chosen on their portfolio
and a letter of motivation. They get a
bursary from the Ministry of Culture,
and from the European Union if their
school of destination participates in
the Erasmus program.
International coopérations
Most students go on field trips every
year. These trips are organized by the
teachers. They often combine with
the realization of projects in international cooperation. For example, for
many years Belleville’s students have
worked on common projects with
students from Shibaura Institute of
Tokyo, Seoul University and Sapienza
University in Rome.
Some DSA invite international students working on specific subjects
(Tonji University of Shangai for “Large
scale architecture”, Phnom Penh
University for the Siem Reap urban
observatory, etc).
Lectures, exhibitions...
The school regularly invites recognized practitioners and theorists:
architects, landscape designers, artists.. Several exhibitions initiated by
students take place throughout the
year.

The Ipraus is characterized by the
combination and confrontation of architecture, urbanism and landscape
architecture with the social sciences.
Their research axes include architecture history and heritage, housing architecture, territorial-scale architecture, transport and sustainability, the
teaching of architecture, and studies
of cities in Asia and Africa: the town
as it is designed, as it is built, as it is
represented and lived.
makes the link between students and
professionals. Hundreds of students
use this system to find a job.
Bellasso
organizes cultural and sports activities, and a regular event mostly featuring the school’s brass band “Les
Rillettes de Belleville”, perfect to socialize in a casual atmosphere.
Bellastock
This association organises each
year an architecture festival called
“Bellastock”, open to students from
other architecture schools where
thousands of students gather to
build together ephemeral buildings
paying particular attention to the
environment.
Cosa mentale
This association produces a review
and organises conférences on remarkable architecture.
And so much more...
The future of the school’s community
life may depend on you too !
