Artist: Chris Anthem Exhibition: “JOUST” Venue: Minus 5, Beirut Minus 5, Mkalles Main Road Parking -3 Elevator to MINUS 5 Phone: 01-697230 [email protected] www.minus-5.com Dates: 5/6/2014 - 28/6/2014 (Mondays to Saturdays 10am - 8pm) Opening – 5/6/2014. 7.00pm “Joust” is British artist Chris Anthem’s first solo exhibition in Lebanon. An overview of work created in Lebanon and Ethiopia since 2012; work whose fragile vision spans trans-historical and global styles, displayed over 600 m2 of space at Minus 5’s exhibition space in Mansourieh, Beirut. The exhibition reads as an iconography in which literary, political, art and historical references intermingle with the artist’s own biography. The result is gloriously unsettling: a Balaclava’d madonna tends Jounieh’s floating electric power station; crusaders become submariners; Pegasus is pregnant; hobby horses joust for the fate of Qusayr; dogs turn on the dotted antlered head of Actaeon; Lebanese women dream of escape by any ocean going means; whilst the mug shots of an anonymous militia appear on a series of Zara bags, from which the exhibition gets its name. Visionary, subtly constructed, moving and grotesque at once, these works glisten with energy that oscillates between classical lyricism and neo-expressionist gestures. These are paintings that attempt to reconcile the neurosis of historical signification with the desire for self-expression. The work utilises non-traditional supports that are memories of times and places: cowhides from the artist’s time in Ethiopia painting the Merci tribe; dress pattern paper from the memory print of watching his mother making clothes; and bags from the retail chain Zara, a symbol of Beirut’s amnesiac consumerism that mistakes globalization for cosmopolitanism. However, it is the more intimate qualities of the materials used in the paintings that find resonance with the viewer – their weight, rawness or perceived fragility. Just as in the mock combat of a joust, where all the theatricality of the banners, coats of arms, filigreed armor and skill of horsemanship belie the inherent vulnerability of the combatant, it is this human aspect of the work that ultimately breathes through the varnish of the paint’s surface. In this way the paintings show their bruises and scars, emitting a sensitive and tender violence which is unsettling in the context of their aesthetic armor. Biography Chris Anthem was born in 1974, studying at Liverpool and the Slade School of Art, London. His paintings can be found in the collections of the Al-Thani Family of Qatar and Byblos Bank, Lebanon, plus private collections in the USA, Hungary & the UK.
