Press release
Institut Pasteur becomes an associate member of Paris Sciences et
Lettres (PSL) Research University for innovative interdisciplinary
research and teaching
The president of Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) Research University, Thierry Coulhon,
and the director general of Institut Pasteur, Professor Christian Bréchot, will sign an
agreement on 23 May 2016 making Institut Pasteur an associate member of PSL
Research University. This collaboration will strengthen and develop new collaboration
in the fields of research and education.
This partnership is part of their common desire to make Paris Sciences et Lettres a world-class
research university, thanks to its institutional model and the quality of its research and
education, which is the fruit of the alliance of the most prestigious institutions of France.
A research institute of excellence in the fields of microbiology and infectious diseases,
immunology, neurosciences, the biology of development, genetics and cancer, Institut
Pasteur provides research and education that is highly complementary to the
disciplines represented within PSL. Building on the strong existing links between Institut
Pasteur and several member institutions of PSL (including Institut Curie, Ecole Supérieure de
Physique et de Chimie Industrielle de la Ville de Paris, and École Normale Supérieure) and on
the excellence of its member institutions, including INSERM, the CNRS and Collège de France
in the field of biology, this partnership will provide facilitated access to the respective
platforms of the various institutions, the establishment of new co-financed incentive
programmes and new joint research projects. As such, Institut Pasteur will be invited to
participate in the IRIS programmes (Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Initiatives)
established by PSL within the framework of the development of its research policy.
Going beyond innovative research projects, Institut Pasteur hopes to reinforce its joint
educational activities with Paris Sciences et Lettres, welcoming students to Institut Pasteur
courses, which are marked by a strong practical aspect. Thanks to this partnership, Institut
Pasteur and PSL will also be able to develop common interdisciplinary courses at the
highest level. The Medicine/Science Programme, which brings together Ecole Normale
Supérieure, Institut Curie and Institut Pasteur with the support of PSL, perfectly illustrates the
contribution of this partnership, by offering the students enrolled in this programme access to
new forms of education and new host laboratories. In terms of tech transfer, Institut Pasteur
will be able to contribute to the accompaniment of startups, with an emphasis on those oriented
towards technologies situated at the interface of "exact" and biomedical sciences. Also
planned is a close involvement with student entrepreneurship, in particular within the PSLPépite hub and including industrial and/or institutional partnerships.
This partnership also offers Institut Pasteur the opportunity to associate itself with the PSLITI pre-doctoral programme, a unique programme in France which enables the best
scientists to become future startuppers.
