On 24th April 2012, we’ll remember the 97th year of the 1915 genocide perpetrated by the
OttomanEmpireagainstallChristianpeople(Armenians,ArameansandPontianGreeks)living
intheOttomanEmpire.
Indeedinearly20thCentury,theOttomanEmpiretookthe“opportunity”oftheWWItomakean
ethnic‐religiouscleansingtohaveonebighomogenous empirewithonenation:the Turksand
onereligion:Islam.
This conducted to mass killings of about 2.5 million of Christians: about 1.5 Million of
Armenians,about750.000Arameansandabout350.000PontianGreeks.
Since then, the successor of the Ottoman Empire, namely the Turkish state never recognized
thesecrimesandonlyadmits“somemassacres”duetoWWI.
In addition to the denial of the genocide, Turkey has conducted a policy of Turkifying of the
region and the remaining Aramean Christians. On the ground this was done by forcing the
Aramean(Syriac)ChristianstotakeTurkishfamilynames,bychangingthevillagenames(e.g.in
TurabdinallAramean(Syriac)villageschangedtheiroriginalAramaïc‐SyriacnamestoTurkish
ones),bybanningthespeakingandteachingoftheAramaiclanguage(spokenbyJesus‐Christ),
Christianfaithandculture,etc.
ShallweremindherethatTurkeyiswillingtojointheEuropeanUnion?
After the fall of the Ottoman Empire (WWI), the Turkish state was established based on the
Lausanne (CH) treaty in 1923. This treaty provided rights & protections for all non‐Muslim
minoritiesthroughouttheArticles37‐45.
Article40oftheTreatyofLausanne;“TurkishnationalsbelongingtoNON‐MUSLIM minorities
shall enjoy the same treatment and security [guarantee] in law and in fact as other Turkish
nationals. In particular, they shall have an equal right to establish, manage and control at their
ownexpense,anycharitable,religiousandsocialinstitutions,anyschoolsandotherestablishments
forinstructionandeducation,withtherighttousetheirownlanguageandtoexercisetheirown
religionfreelytherein”.
ThesearticleswereneverappliedtotheArameans(Syriacs)todate!!!
Thereforewecalluponinternationalinstitutions,governmentsandbodiestoofficiallyrecognize
the1915genocideagainstallChristianpeopleofthethenOttomanEmpire:Arameans,Pontian
GreeksandArmenians.
Wealsowouldliketopointoutthatthe“InternationalAssociationofGenocideScholars”(IAGS)
recognized this genocide as perpetrated against the 3 Christian people (Arameans, Pontian
GreeksandArmenians)inDecember2007.
On11thMarch2010,Swedenwasthefirstcountryintheworldtorecognizethe1915genocide
asperpetratedagainstthethreeChristianspeople:Arameans,PontianGreeksandArmenians.
Wehopethatthisisonlyabeginningandothercountries andInternationalbodieswillfollow
the example of the I.A.G.S. and Sweden by recognizing this genocide against the Arameans,
PontianGreeksandArmenians.
We also would like to stress that we are not against Turkey, nor the Turks. We ask for
recognition, justice and memory work like did Germany for the Shoah and France for its
collaboration.
