T
he National Artist Program brings together three young, emerging artists from each province and territory to
participate in collaborative and professional development program. The artists represent one of the following five
disciplines of theatre, dance/movement, visual art, music and literature.
Artists were selected through a competitive application process on the basis of artistic excellence and the ability to
collaborate. The artists will have the opportunity to practice their chosen craft, under the mentorship of leading Canadian
artists, in a collaborative and cross-disciplinary setting with other young artists from across Canada. Culminating in a
gala performance at the end of the two weeks, the inclusion of the arts through this program will enhance appreciation
for the pursuit of excellence in both sport and cultural worlds, which is the essence of the Canada Games.
Team Ontario is delighted to announce the line up for this year’s 2011 National Artist Program (NAP) team: theatre artist
Michael Caccamo; visual artist Jacob Hughes and dance artist Jamee Valin. Manager of Team Ontario’s National Artists
is Marlene Stirrett-Matson, a former dancer and arts administrator.
L
e Programme national des artistes rassemble trois jeunes artistes prometteurs de chaque province et territoire
pour participer à un programme de collaboration et de perfectionnement professionnel. Ces artistes évoluent dans
l’une des cinq disciplines suivantes : théâtre, danse/mouvement, arts visuels, musique et littérature.
Ces artistes ont été sélectionnés sur concours en fonction de leur excellence dans leur domaine et de leur capacité à
collaborer. Ils ont la possibilité de pratiquer la discipline de leur choix sous la tutelle d’artistes canadiens de premier plan,
dans un cadre collaboratif et pluridisciplinaire avec d’autres jeunes artistes venus de tout le pays. Le point d’orgue de ce
projet est le gala présenté à l’issue des deux semaines. L’incorporation des arts à travers ce programme souligne la
quête d’excellence, tant dans le sport que dans la sphère culturelle, qui constitue l’essence même des Jeux du Canada.
Équipe Ontario est ravie d’annoncer le nom des artistes sélectionnés pour le Programme national des artistes (PNA) de
2011 : l’artiste dramatique Michael Caccamo, l’artiste plasticien Jacob Hughes ainsi que la danseuse et chorégraphe
Jamee Valin. La chef d’équipe des artistes nationaux de l’Ontario est Marlene Stirrett-Matson, ancienne danseuse et
administratrice des affaires culturelles.

With a BFA and MA in dance from York
University, Marlene has had a varied and
interesting career in dance as well as in
government. Marlene has been a dancer,
choreographer, performer, teacher, trainer of
other teachers, assistant artistic director, arts
administrator, promoter and tour manager of
several professional modern dance companies.
Marlene has also worked in the government as
an arts consultant providing funding, strategic
advice and stakeholder relations to a variety of
performing arts companies and organizations.
Marlene is thrilled to be the NAP Manager for
Team Ontario for the third time.
Titulaire d’un BFA et d’une maîtrise de danse de
l’Université York, Marlene a mené une carrière
variée et passionnante dans la danse et au
gouvernement, exerçant comme danseuse,
chorégraphe, interprète, professeure de danse,
formatrice pour d’autres professeurs, directrice
artistique adjointe, administratrice des affaires
culturelles, et organisatrice de la promotion et
des tournées de plusieurs compagnies de danse
moderne professionnelles. Marlene a également
travaillé au gouvernement en tant que conseillère
dans le secteur des arts, offrant un financement
et des conseils stratégiques, et assurant les
relations avec les intervenants pour divers
organismes et compagnies des arts de la scène.

Valin, Jamee

Age: 21
Toronto
Jamee graduated from George Brown College
for dance performance studies. With 17 years
invested in her art, Jamee likes that dance
combines the best of a physical ability,
understanding and use of the body with creativity
and expression, both personal and collective.
Jamee also enjoys theatre and photography and
is also a creative writer. Nova Scotia will be the
fourth province/terrirory where Jamee has
danced in the past year; the others include
Ontario, BC and the Yukon, where she danced in
a CanCan show in Dawson City. Jamee has her
own company (www.valence-valin.com) where
she performs, choreographs and produces work.
Caccamo, Michael
Jamee obtient un diplôme en études
chorégraphiques au Collège George Brown.
Investie dans sa discipline depuis 17 ans, Jamee
apprécie une danse sollicitant à la fois le meilleur
des capacités physiques, la compréhension et
l'utilisation du corps tout en faisant preuve de
créativité et d'expression, tant en solo qu'en
groupe. Elle s'intéresse aussi au théâtre et à la
photographie, et se distingue comme créatrice
littéraire. La Nouvelle-Écosse sera la quatrième
province/territoire où elle aura dansé en un an;
les autres sont l'Ontario, la Colombie-Britannique
et le Yukon, où elle a pris part à un spectacle de
cancan à Dawson City. Jamee détient sa propre
compagnie (www.valence-valin.com) pour
laquelle elle danse, chorégraphie et produit des
spectacles.

Oakville
Michael has been acting since he was 12 and
won his highschool's Co-op, Theatre, and Most
Likely to Win Oscar Awards. Michael looks up to
people who defy the odds through hard work and
determination. Michael's heroes are Terry Fox
and Saku Koivu. Along with acting, Michael's
other passion is hockey, which he still plays in
his hometown. Michael's future goal is to be a
Hollywood actor and screenwriter. He is currently
writing a screenplay with his editor based in
California.
Hughes, Jacob
Michael joue la comédie depuis ses 12 ans, et
remporte divers prix dans son école secondaire :
programme coopératif en art dramatique, et Most
Likely to Win an Oscar Award. Michael admire
ceux qui forcent leur destin grâce à un travail
acharné et de la détermination. Ses héros sont
Terry Fox et Saku Koivu. Outre la comédie,
Michael est passionné de hockey, qu'il pratique
toujours dans sa ville natale. Pour l'avenir, il
souhaite devenir acteur et scénariste à
Hollywood. Il planche actuellement sur un
scénario avec son éditeur basé en Californie.

Jacob is a visual artist who enjoys experimenting
with a wide array of media. He paints with oil and
acrylic on large panels and canvases often
working with collage and including text in his
work. Jacob attended the Etobicoke School for
the Arts and has received several awards for his
art: the Patrick West Award for Excellence in the
Visual Arts (2010) and Proficiency Award for
Visual Arts (2010). Jacob has had numerous
showings in a variety of galleries and settings,
including Toronto's Nuit Blanche.
Jacob est un plasticien qui aime faire des
expériences avec toute sorte de modes
d'expression. Il peint à l'huile et à l'acrylique sur
de larges panneaux et toiles, et a souvent
recours à des collages et au texte dans son
travail. Jacob a étudié à l'Etobicoke School for
the Arts et reçu plusieurs distinctions pour ses
créations : le Patrick West Award for Excellence
in the Visual Arts (2010) et le Proficiency Award
for Visual Arts (2010). Il a montré ses œuvres
dans diverses galeries et occasions, dont la Nuit
blanche de Toronto.
