Welcome message
6TH EDITION
APRIL 19-21 2016
Dear friends,
We are delighted to welcome you in Geneva, in
the heart of Europe, a cosmopolitan and health
expert city. The charming Lake of Geneva region
is also known as the Swiss Health Valley, with an
important activity in research and development
in the field of life sciences.
The Geneva Health Forum is proud to celebrate
its 10th anniversary. The overarching topic of this
year’s edition will be Sustainable and Affordable
Innovations in Healthcare. For the 2016 edition,
you will find a very rich and high quality program
with contributions of many high level experts.
Faithful to its open-minded and federating spirit,
the GHF offers a unique opportunity for dialogue
between field practioners, professionals from
academic backgrounds, from the public and private sector and from international and also non
governmental organisations. The complexity of
global health challenges requires an integrative
and multi-sector approach: the development of
sustainable, affordable and practical solutions,
whether they are pharmaceutical, biotechnological, genomics - related, IT-related or non
technological, will enhance the access to quality
health care worldwide.
The GHF tenth anniversary comes along with an
innovative concept:
For the very first time, it’s our great pleasure to
host the World Health Summit Regional Meeting
in Geneva. This very promising partnership is the
result of a longstanding friendship between the
Antoine Flahault
Claudine Mathieu Thiébaud
3
members of an important international network
in the field of global health. Where global health
issues are at stake, with the aim of making recommendations on public policies, it is essential
for the organiser of the GHF and our friends of
the WHS to unify our skills and expertise in order
to develop a strong common voice on global
health issues.
Part of the new GHF concept is the creation of
Tomorrow’s affordable hospital, a special marketplace where we will display sustainable and
affordable innovations in different health sectors
in an interactive manner. Come and visit this
“hands-on” special exhibition, where you will
discover demonstrations of innovations that you
might implement in your home country.
Health and innovation are universal issues; this is
why the GHF wants to share a selection of innovations with a broad public on the occasion of a
public conference which will take place on April 20
at 6pm, during the tenth anniversary celebration.
The GHF is a major event created by the Geneva
University Hospitals and the University of Geneva.
We would like to thank all our strategic partners,
as well as the local, national and international
public and private institutions and organisations
for their great support, contributions and sponsorship. Our thanks go also to you, our participants,
who help us to shape tomorrow’s global health
development agenda.
We wish you an exciting Geneva meeting.

Introducing the Global Fund’s development of an e-marketplace for the
procurement of public health commodities
Wambo.org is an easy-to-use global online marketplace for public health partners
and governments to reliably purchase quality-assured, lifesaving medicines and
health program related commodities at low cost prices to more effectively reach
those most in need.
Wambo.org establishes an effective, highly automated and secure purchasing process to support sustainable global public health programs.
A ground-breaking approach to global health procurement, the platform pools
the purchasing power of both small and large budget buyers to guarantee that all
orders – regardless of their size – achieve consistent service delivery, prices and

Symposium of the Swiss Meeting for Infectious Disease Dynamics Room 15
The symposium is organized by the Swiss Meeting for Infectious Disease Dynamics (SMIDDY). SMIDDY is an annual
one-day meeting focused on mathematical, computational and statistical modeling of infectious diseases. Topics include
within-host and between-host dynamics of infectious diseases in both humans and animals. The aim of the meeting is to
bring together researchers from different fields from Switzerland and abroad, ranging from fundamental research to public
health policy making. Please visit our website for further information on SMIDDY: www.smiddy.ch
Chair: Christian L. Althaus, Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland
11:00 Fabienne Krauer, Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland: “Zika
virus as a cause of neurologic disorders”. Fabienne is a research assistant at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine
(ISPM), University of Bern, Switzerland. Her current research projects include a cost-effectiveness analysis of a chlamydia
rapid test as well as a systematic review of the Zika epidemic. She obtained an M.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences at University of Bern (Switzerland) and an M.Sc. in Epidemiology at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine LSHTM (UK).
Her research interests lie in vector-borne and zoonotic infectious diseases and spatiotemporal modeling of epidemics.
11:25 Flavio Finger, Laboratory of Ecohydrology, Institute of Environmental Engineering, École Polytechnique Fédérale de
Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland: “Modeling the spread of cholera using human mobility estimates derived from
mobile phone records”. Flavio is an environmental engineer and Ph.D. student at the Laboratory of Ecohydrology at EPFL,
where he studies the mechanisms that lead to the spatial spread of infectious diseases. The main focus of his research is
the development of epidemiological models that improve our understanding of cholera outbreaks and their main drivers.
11:50 Tapiwa Ganyani, Center for Statistics, Hasselt University, Hasselt, Belgium: “A stochastic SIR model with non-linear
mass action”. Tapiwa is a statistical consultant and second year Ph.D. student at Hasselt University, Belgium. He works
in the area of Infectious Disease Modeling, and his main research area is the development and application of stochastic
epidemic models.
12:15 Dr. Christian L. Althaus, Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland:
“Potential impact of sexual transmission of Ebola virus on the epidemic in West Africa”. Christian is head of the Immuno-Epidemiology research group at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern, Switzerland.
He graduated from Biology at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and obtained a Ph.D. in Theoretical Biology at Utrecht University,
The Netherlands. His research group uses mathematical modeling and data analysis to understand the impact of control
measures on the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. His particular interests lie in the dynamics of viruses within
and between hosts, emerging infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance.
