LATEST SUDBURY ARTS COUNCIL NEWS
“We are occasionally asked ‘what does the Sudbury Arts Council do’? We are like
a Chamber of Commerce for the Arts advocating and supporting the Arts
community through our mandate to "Connect, Communicate and Celebrate". We
maintain a database of Arts organizations and Artists on our website. We represent the
Arts community to all levels of government. We hold workshops and seminars for Artists
and Arts organizations. We do not put on Arts shows, exhibitions or concerts, however
we actively promote all Arts activities through our Arts-Events e-mail bulletin and on the
website and through the local media. Our Arts Council operates with very limited
resources compared to Arts Councils in cities of similar size in Ontario, such as London
and Oakville who have up to three full time staff in downtown office facilities. We
operate a "virtual" office and have a part time contract staff of one for just eight hours of
work a week to help accomplish our objectives together with the volunteer work of our
board. We always welcome your comments and suggestions with respect to our service
to the Arts Community and to the many citizens in Greater Sudbury and area who enjoy
what the Arts contributes to our quality of life.”
John Lindsay, President, Sudbury Arts Council

producteur, Dare To Care Records : Faisant suite à la récente annonce publique
revienne l’an prochain, mais cela reste à confirmer.

Site internet www.leTNO.ca

April 14th, 2012 at 2 p.m. AND April 19th, 2012, at 8 p.m. *with Supertitles (English
surtitles), the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO) presents II (two rooms) from
Mansel Robinson. A suspense by the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario et du Théâtre de
la Vieille 17. Terrorism and betrayal .. a love story ! As an old-school Canadian police
officer, Mercier is a forthright and charming man. But he has become suspicious of
Maha, his beautiful and intelligent Muslim wife. Both individuals reveal themselves
through confessions where murder, treason and crimes against the state are interwoven.
Is this a police investigation or a paranoid delusion? After the TNO’s production of
SLAGUE – L’histoire d’un mineur (Spitting Slag) and the local presentation of Trains
fantômes (Ghost Trains), Mansel Robinson is back at the TNO with the assistance of his
colleague and translator Jean Marc Dalpé. In this suspenseful drama, Robinson

To April 8: Red Lake: An Exhibit by Harriet Carlson and Emergence at the Art
Gallery of Sudbury. Join us in Gallery I for a dynamic portrayal of Red Lake, Ontario
through fashion and landscape. Harriet Carlson is a fashion and portraiture
photographer based out of Red Lake and Sudbury, Ontario. Harriet works closely with
other artists, including seamstresses, fabric designers and makeup artists to create
striking images. Many of the models in Carlson’s work are people from Red Lake whom
the artist has a dialogue with. Carlson reflects a sense of Red Lake and the stories of
the people who live there in this exhibition. Red Lake: An Exhibit by Harriet Carlson
provides a subtle commentary about the relevance of mining, logging, hunting and
fishing in the northern community, while expressing a contemporary, urban feel.
Emergence will be featured in Gallery 2. This juried exhibition represents a crosssection of artistic development from grades nine through 12 in painting, drawing,
sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media, and has been an annual
exhibition at the Art Gallery of Sudbury since the 1970’s. The Emergence exhibition is
composed of 68 works from secondary school students of the Rainbow District School
Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, le conseil scolaire du Grand Nord de
l'Ontario and le conseil scolaire du Nouvel-Ontario. Art Gallery of Sudbury 705-675-4871

car crash contains themes and images which the company deemed would be too
sensitive for a community grieving the deaths of seven young individuals. Tickets will

April 21 and April 22 from 11am to 5pm: The Walden Art Club (WAC) invites you to
our 42nd Annual Spring Show introducing the “Artists in Action” Show and Sale.
This year our spring Show will take on a new look. Instead of setting up the show as a
gallery presentation of the member’s artwork we will be set up this year in our “Artists in
Action” format. Our members will have their own displays and will be working on a
project while you watch. They will be able to answer all your questions concerning their
artwork. Every year the members set up a canvas as a “Work in Progress” for those
visitors who get inspired and wish to try their hand at putting paint on canvas. Our
children’s section has been a great success in the past years. We encourage creativity
for all ages so we set up an area for the young artists to play and create a drawing or a
bookmark to take home with them. While at the show enter to win one of the door prizes
that our artist have donated and take a break in our Café to chat with friends and family
while enjoying a coffee and/or dessert or two. Before you leave browse through our

and all to enjoy the sights and sounds of some amazing homegrown talent at this
year’s Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards Conference in the Great Hall at

will take place from April 26th to April 28th at the Quality Inn in Sudbury. The goal
of this conference will be to create practical skills development and networking
opportunities for all participants. The event will include a networking lounge for
participants and industry guests to interact with one another, as well as skills
development programming such as panel discussions. This grassroots industry
conference is MFM’s key skills development activity, allowing MFM to make the most
effective use of its resources and industry connections. There will also be an Official

Music Showcase at the Townehouse Tavern and a Film Showcase at Rainbow

l’Ontario a à offrir.

May 13 to May 26 with Opening Reception May 14 from 5 to 7:30pm: 'The La
Cloche Spirit: The Equivalent Light', a photographic exhibit by Jon Butler
exploring the equivalent light of dawn and how it evokes inspirational space
capturing the timeless beauty of nature. The exhibit will be in the South Tower Lobby
of the Royal Bank Plaza at 200 Bay St., Toronto. An Equivalent is a photograph that
functions as a work of art because while it communicates it also suggests mental
images. This is what the natural colour of Butler’s photographs inspires. Alfred Stieglitz
pioneered this photographic concept, which was adopted and widely taught by Minor
White. The digital and analog exhibition photographs were taken in the Willisville
Mountain area of La Cloche. Butler’s 30 years of photographing La Cloche has resulted
in a photographic style that conveys the colour fields of Mark Rothko and landscapes of
Franklin Carmichael. www.jonbutler.com
