Ph.D. project, TRB group Principal advisors: Thierry Sempere, Matthias Bernet Diachronic exhumation along- and across-strike of the Andes of Peru The Central Andes are an outstanding orogen because its crust reaches a thickness of over 70 km, which is not the result of a simple continent-continent collision. The Andes of Peru are a key segment for understanding the mountain building processes that caused such considerable crustal thickness, because the orogenic volume markedly decreases from south to north along this segment. The objective of this Ph.D. project is to explore the relations between the timing and rate of Andean exhumation as a function of fundamental geological factors such as tectonics, magmatism, and climate. Therefore, this Ph.D. project will address three key questions: • Is there a clear link between exhumation and the supposed propagation of deformation? • Were exhumation, arc growth, and/or magmatic flare-ups synchronous in regions where subduction-related magmatism was active? • Is the marked variation of orogenic volume along the Peruvian Andes related to a (paleo)climatic gradient that would have induced a significant erosional gradient at the scale of the orogen? In order to address these questions, new thermochronologic data must be obtained, and time-temperature profiles constructed. The thermochronologic database regarding the Peruvian Andes is currently extremely limited, but understanding the orogeny requires a detailed knowledge of the chronology of exhumation. The data available for Peru and adjacent Andean countries suggest that exhumation was most likely diachronic across strike, as well as along strike. The Ph.D. student will test for diachronic exhumation by determining the timing and rate of exhumation in different parts of the Peruvian Andes, and propose accurate interpretations. This doctorate thus primarily aims at obtaining new thermochronologic data in order to advance a number of fundamental issues regarding mountain building in the Andes. Sampling will rely on a detailed knowledge of the geology of Peru in order to target key geological units to provide a maximum of information at a regional scale. Samples will be collected from exposed bedrock as well as from the stratigraphic record of synorogenic basins. Structural mapping will also be carried out in order to identify the controls of tectonic exhumation on the Peruvian Andes. The Ph.D. candidate should be motivated by field and structural geology but also by analytical approaches. This project will be partly funded by an ISTerre internal grant and lies within a research proposal submitted to the ANR.
