Bio Speaker 1: [Bio] Attack Helicopter Pilot since 1989, Expert in Training and Simulation since 2001
and French Liaison Officer to US Army Aviation Center of Excellence since 2012, LTC Eric MERCK was
the Head of French Army Aviation Simulation between 2007 and 2012. He was one of the drafters of
French Army Aviation Simulation Training Policy in 2005.
Abstract (in english)

Directly in contact with the technical and tactical simulation of the US Army Aviation, LTC MERCK will
provide a full spectrum description of US Army Aviation Simulation from school to combat units:
Crawl, Walk, Run! This pedagogical path to success allows the Army Aviation to train 1500 helicopter
pilots a year with a very low rate of failure. Flight School XXI is the best mix of simulation and real
flight for young trainees but the new training on twin-engine Lakota helicopter may challenge this
balance.
Computer based Training for the basic knowledge; cockpit procedure training for the switchology;
AVCATT and full flight simulation for the full course provide alternate means of training to real flight.
Fort Rucker is the biggest simulation center in the world but the trainees are still flying real aircraft at
the same ratio that their French counterparts.
The key points of the operational training are now located inside the combat aviation brigades. After
13 years at war, combat helicopter pilots need now to train in garrison on a wider range of missions.
Where the counter-insurrection missions were the only subject of interest, the new digitized
operational training with AH-64E, UH-60M and CH-47F requires now more knowledge and new skills.
The need of greater scalability demands Army Aviation standards to be reinforced through LVC
simulation embedded in real flights inside DAGIR in order to keep the sacred trust of the ground
forces.
The fully digitized simulation network is now not only useful but mandatory to think and face the
challenges of the next war.
