Douglas Mitchell is National Co-Chair of our Firm as well as Counsel in our Calgary
office. Doug, who joined BLG as an articling student, focuses his practice on corporate
and commercial law, commercial real estate and sports law. He advises both multinational and small business clients in corporate and commercial matters, and in the
negotiation and drafting of related agreements. He served as Managing Partner at the
Calgary office for several years.

Before practising law, Doug played professional football with the Canadian Football
League’s BC Lions. From 1984 to 1989, he took a leave of absence from law to serve
as CFL Commissioner. Prior to that, he was a member of the National Hockey League’s
Board of Governors from 1980 to 1984. He is a member of the Alberta Sports Hall of
Fame and a recipient of the Lester Pearson Award as an outstanding alumnus of the
Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union. He has also received numerous honours for his
exceptional record of community service, and dedication to the practice of law.
