aire la cuisine c’est la corvée ! Pour cette édition
du festival on parlera de casseroles, de fourneaux,
de gamelles et autres marmites, éventuellement
de leur récurage après usage ! Laissez-vous surprendre par nos invités, par leur évocation des joies de
la table depuis la préparation, l’ingestion jusqu’à la
digestion, on évitera, promis-juré, l’indigestion. Quoi
de pire que d’être obligé d’avaler des sauces grasses,
des sucreries qui stimulent la soif, étanchée par des
vins trop capiteux, alors qu’avec la littérature rien de
tout cela, on reste léger, en éveil, dans une approche
intellectuelle il est vrai mais parfois savoureuse, avec
comme avantage de ménager les estomacs fragiles.
Le bénéfice d’un festival littéraire sur la cuisine réside
dans le fait de ne prendre aucun risque avec les ballonnements et de préserver avantageusement sa
ligne. Vous le verrez, tous les aspects de la nourriture
seront abordés, des plus triviaux aux plus nobles, allant jusqu’au frétillement des papilles de la mémoire
ravivée par une madeleine, par exemple.
Il sera question de manger il est vrai, de se rassasier,
de se sustenter, éventuellement de ripailler, centralement de bouffer ou de manière plus raffinée de se
délecter, de déguster et de se régaler de mots et de
mets. S’il est vrai que manger n’est plus seulement
se nourrir, notre époque a vu naître un nouvel art de
vivre inspiré par les grands chefs. Bien manger est
aujourd’hui synonyme de préserver sa santé, de se
soigner, de lutter contre le vieillissement. L’élixir de
jouvence a été découvert, enfin, il gisait dans nos assiettes. Que ne l’avait-on su auparavant ! Aujourd’hui on
se démène pour nous faire bénéficier des bienfaits des
cuisines du terroir ; l’agriculture biologique à la pointe
de nos fourchettes, sus aux graisses malignes qui encombrent nos coronaires, mort aux glucides fourbes,
vive le manger sain et rédempteur.
Depuis qu’elle existe la littérature s’est emparée de
nos assiettes et de ce qui s’y trouve. Epicure lui-même

Débats, lectures, ventes de livres, séances de dédicaces et pour la première fois cette année, performances,
culinaires et littéraires, à ne pas manquer. Il y en aura
pour tous les goûts !

After a good dinner one can forgive
anybody, even one's own relations
C
ooking can be hard work! This year’s festival
will include references to all manner of saucepans, stoves, mess tins and pots, not to mention
whose turn it is to scrub them clean afterwards… Expect a few surprises on the menu as our guests evoke
the pleasures of food, its preparation, ingestion and
digestion, although we promise, hand on heart, no indigestion. What could be worse than being obliged to
gulp down rich sauces and sweet delicacies, creating
a thirst which must be quenched by excessively heady
wines? With literature you can avoid all that, remaining
unburdened of belly and sharp of mind. An intellectual
approach, certainly, but one offering plenty to savour,
and undoubtedly more gentle on delicate constitutions. A literary festival on the theme of cuisine allows
the participant to avoid any risk of bloating, while doing
wonders for the figure. And as you will see, the subject
of food will be tackled from every angle, from the most
trivial to the most noble: those quivering taste buds of
memory famously aroused by a madeleine, for example.
Yes, there will be plenty of talk about eating, getting
one’s fill, taking sustenance, even feasting. While we
may hear of grub being scoffed down, we will also witness a more refined approach, where delight is taken
in the taste and texture of words and food alike. If it has
long been true that we no longer eat simply to survive,
our era has witnessed the rise of a new art of living
inspired by the great chefs. Eating well is today synonymous with keeping healthy, taking care of oneself,
combatting the ageing process. The elixir of youth has
finally been discovered… on our plates! How did we not
know about this before! Today we go to great lengths
to reap the benefits of wholesome fare. Organic produce speared to our forks, we seek to chase out the
evil fats clogging our arteries, cursing devious carbohydrates while celebrating healthy eating as an act of
redemption.

For as long as it has existed, literature has looked to
our plates and all they contain. Was it not Epicurus
himself who wrote, “Let us be quick to give into temptation, lest it should disappear”. With that in mind,
we can only recommend that you come along to the
events organised this year; afterwards, it will be too
late. You will not regret it. Our esteemed guests will employ their texts and talks to conjure up the most refined
flavours, the most delicate aromas. They will offer you
a privileged tasting of some of their finest paragraphs,
amid great banqueting and telling of tales.
During the three days of the Festival, food and language will thus be blended in accordance with our
mouth-watering recipe. Fourteen writers representing
a variety of cultures and languages will invite you to
share their passion for the pleasures of the table. Discussions, readings, book sales, signings, and for the
first time this year, performances both culinary and
literary, will ensure that there is something to everyone’s taste.
Jointly organised by the Alliance Française Dublin and
the Cultural Service of the French Embassy, the Festival owes its continued success to the precious partners and sponsors who have offered their support and
whose generosity we gratefully acknowledge. We are
extremely thankful to Foras na Gaeilge, Poetry Ireland,
the Irish Writers Centre, Literature Ireland, as well as
a number of French and Irish businesses, with a very
special mention to the French laboratories Servier

Contemporary poet Francis Ponge wrote Le
Parti pris des choses in 1942. This prose collection has the particularity of eschewing poetic
lyricism, focussing instead on a detailed description of each subject examined. Ponge treats inanimate objects as if they were human beings.
Le pain, a famous prose piece in his oeuvre,
scrutinizes an everyday item, in the process
transforming it into something unfamiliar. Deeply rooted in the Surrealist movement, Ponge
mutates our glum daily reality, transporting us
into another world where things are reinvented.
Objects take on a new identity under Francis
Ponge’s subtle and attentive gaze.
Poète contemporain, Francis Ponge écrit Le
Parti pris des choses en 1942. Ce recueil de
poèmes en prose à la particularité de s’éloigner
du lyrisme poétique et de se focaliser sur une
description minutieuse de chaque objet traité.
Ponge traite de sujets non pensants comme
s’il s’agissait d’êtres humains. Le pain, un de
ses célèbres poèmes, détaille un objet du quotidien, pour le transformer en quelque chose
d’étrange. Profondément ancré dans le mouvement surréaliste, Ponge métamorphose notre
quotidien morose, en nous transportant dans
un nouvel univers où les choses se réinventent.
Les objets prennent une nouvelle identité sous
la plume délicate et attentionnée de Francis
Ponge.

de la mémoire, Emmanuel Giraud opens his
impressionist tasting menu and comments,
with music, on hundreds of different
bottles, much like a stock taker in the ways
of Georges Perec. With each sip, he is
reminded of an emotion, drunken
memories, musical experiences.
After the performance the audience is invited
to sample the bottles which have been

John Banville was born in Wexford in 1945. His
novels include The Book of Evidence, The Sea,
which won the Man Booker Prize (2005), Ancient
Light and, most recently, The Blue Guitar. Under
the pen-name Benjamin Black he has written a
series of crime novels, including Christine Falls
and Even the Dead. He has been awarded the
Kafka Prize, the Austrian State Prize for Literature, and the Prince of Asturias Award.
Food historian Michèle Barrière studied under
Jean-Louis Flandrin, who first introduced this
subject to French universities.
As a culinary journalist she has contributed to
numerous publications, including Terre sauvage, and L’Express. She currently pens a
regular column, “De la terre à la table”, for the
weekly magazine Rustica.
Having written the series Histoire en cuisine,
screened in 2005 on TV channel Arte, she
turned to the historical crime genre, tracing
throughout two sagas, the history and development of cuisine and “table manners”. By reviving their recipes, she pays homage to the cooks
of centuries past, now largely forgotten, who
founded French culinary heritage.
John Banville est né à Wexford en 1945. Il est

fût l’élève de Jean-Louis Flandrin, initiateur de
cette discipline au sein de l’université française.
Journaliste culinaire, elle a collaboré à la parution de divers titres – Terre sauvage, L’Express.
Aujourd’hui, elle assure régulièrement la rubrique « De la terre à la table » au sein de Rustica.
Auteur pour la chaîne Arte de la série Histoire
en cuisine (diffusée en 2005), elle se tourne
vers l’écriture de polars historiques, choisissant
de retracer l’histoire et l’évolution de la cuisine
et des « manières de table ». En faisant revivre
leurs recettes, elle rend hommage aux cuisiniers des siècles passés, aujourd’hui oubliés,
qui ont fondé notre patrimoine culinaire.

Noelle Chatelet
A lawyer by training, Vanessa Barrot now devotes herself full-time to literature, after ten
years at the Paris Bar. In 2014, in collaboration
with Noël Balen, she published the first novel in
the Crimes gourmands series, which combines
criminal intrigue and gastronomy. Four volumes
have now appeared, and a comic-book version
is soon to be released, as well as an adaptation
for television, currently in production.
In parallel, she produces personal work (stories
and novels) dealing in particular with the role of
the body in contemporary society.
Noëlle Châtelet is a writer, academic, and former actress.
She was director of the Institut Français in Florence from 1989 to 1991, then co-president of
the Maison des écrivains de Paris from 1995
to 1999. A member of the Comité de la Société
des Gens de Lettres since 1996, she served as
its vice president from 2003 to 2015. She specialises in issues related to the body and food.
Her work has been translated into more than a
dozen languages, and she has also produced
documentary films.
Avocate de formation, Vanessa Barrot se consacre aujourd’hui à l’écriture, après avoir exercé
plus de 10 ans au sein du Barreau de Paris. En
2014, elle publie avec Noël Balen le premier
roman de la série Crimes gourmands, qui mêle
intrigue policière et gastronomie. Quatre volumes sont d’ores et déjà parus. Une adaptation
en bande dessinées verra bientôt le jour, ainsi
qu’une adaptation pour la télévision en cours
de production.
Parallèlement, elle travaille sur des ouvrages
personnels (récits et romans) traitant notamment de la place du corps dans la société contemporaine.
Noëlle Châtelet est écrivain et universitaire. Elle
fut aussi comédienne.
Elle a été directrice de l’Institut Français de Florence de 1989 à 1991, puis, co-présidente de la
Maison des écrivains de Paris, de 1995 à 1999.
Noëlle Châtelet est membre du Comité de la Société des Gens de Lettres depuis 1996 et viceprésidente de 2003 à 2015. Elle est spécialiste
des questions concernant la problématique du
corps et de la nourriture. Son œuvre est traduite
dans une quinzaine de langues. Elle est également auteure de films documentaires.

Catherine Cleary is a journalist, author and
broadcaster. She works as the restaurant critic
for The Irish Times and writes regularly about
food. In 2015 she organised and hosted The Appetite Talks, a series of talks based on one important Irish ingredient. Her latest book is Counter Culture, the Sheridans Guide to Cheese, with
Irish cheesemongers, Kevin and Seamus Sheridan. She co-wrote and presented with historian
Juliana Adelman the radio documentary series
History on a Plate, based on the stories of Irish
historical recipes, mainly found in handwritten
manuscripts in the National Library of Ireland.
Catherine Cleary est journaliste, auteure et animatrice de radio. Elle travaille en tant que critique gastronomique pour l’Irish Times et écrit
régulièrement autour de la cuisine et des aliments. En 2015, Catherine a organisé et animé

Christine Dwyer Hickey has published seven novels, one short story collection and a full length
play. The Cold Eye of Heaven won the Irish Novel
of the Year 2012. Tatty was one of the 50 Irish
Novels of the Decade. Last Train from Liguria
was nominated for the Prix L’Européen de Littérature. Her short stories have been published
in anthologies and magazines world-wide and
have won several awards. Her first play Snow
Angels premiered in March 2014 to critical acclaim. Her latest novel, The Lives of Women was
published in April 2015.
She is an elected member of the Irish Academy
of Letters, Aosdána.

Dottore in golosità, Emmanuel Giraud is a
graduate of Le Fresnoy Studio National des Arts
Contemporains, and a former artist-in-residence
at the Villa Médicis. He suffered his first gout
attack at the age of thirty, something in which
he takes a burning and unshakeable pride. In
his quest for beautiful things, fine things, fatty,
juicy, steaming, crispy and voluptuous things, he
explores the theme of culinary memory through
texts, performances, video and sound installations. He also works as a journalist for numerous magazines, and publishes texts in a broad
range of licentious reviews.
The son of a restaurateur, Serge Joncour published his first novel, Vu, in 1998. Then, in
2003, he won the Prix France Télévisions for
U.V. (adapted for the cinema in 2007). He wrote
the screenplay for the film Elle s’appelait Sarah, based on the novel by Tatiana de Rosnay,
starring Kristin Scott Thomas. The movie was a
resounding success. Along with Jacques Jouet,
Hervé Le Tellier and many other artists and writers, he also contributes to the radio show Des
Papous dans la tête on France Culture. His novel
L’Idole was filmed, under the title Superstar, by
Xavier Giannoli in 2012, featuring Kad Merad
and Cécile de France. The film was presented
in official competition at the 2012 Venice Film
Festival.

diplômé du Studio national des arts contemporains Le Fresnoy et ancien pensionnaire de
la Villa Médicis. Sa première crise de goutte
est apparue à l’âge de trente ans ; il en retire
une fierté cuisante mais inébranlable. Dans
sa quête du beau, du bon, du gras, du juteux,
du fumant, du croustillant et du voluptueux, il
explore le thème du souvenir culinaire par le
biais de textes, de performances, de vidéos et
d’installations sonores. Il est également journaliste pour différents magazines de presse écrite
et publie des textes dans diverses revues licencieuses.
Fils de restaurateur, Serge Joncour publie son
premier roman Vu en 1998. Puis, en 2003, le
Prix France Télévisions lui est remis pour U.V.
(adapté au cinéma en 2007). Il a écrit le scénario du film Elle s’appelait Sarah, d’après le

Sheila Maher grew up in Dublin and started writing for radio in 2008, when she lived in Boston.
On her return to Ireland she contributed regularly to Sunday Miscellany on RTE Radio 1. Her
first book, Six at the table, a memoir on growing
up in Dublin during the 1970s, was published
in 2011. The book is a quirky take on a suburban childhood told through the foods that were
prepared by her mother and eaten by the family.
She is currently working on a novel.
Born in Waterford in 1954, he received his education at University College Cork. Thomas McCarthys was a public librarian for many years, but
is now writing full-time. He has been awarded
the Patrick Kavanagh Award (1977), Alice Hunt
Bartlett Prize (1981), as well as the AmericanIrish Foundation Literary Award (1984), and
O’Shaughnessy Poetry Prize (2001). Seven collections of poetry, two novels and a book of essays later, he is back with a new collection in
preparation named Pandemonium. He is also
a Member of Aosdána, an Irish association of
artists.
Sheila Maher a grandi à Dublin et a commencé
à écrire pour la radio en 2008 lorsqu’elle vivait
à Boston. De retour en Irlande, elle a collaboré
de façon régulière à l’écriture du programme

Né dans le comté de Waterford en 1954, Thomas McCarthy a suivi des études à University
College Cork. Longtemps bibliothécaire, il se
consacre désormais entièrement à sa carrière
d’écrivain. Il a reçu le Prix Patrick Kavanagh en
1977, le prix Alice Hunt Bartlett en 1981, le prix
de la Fondation littéraire américano-irlandaise
en 1984 et le Prix de poésie O’Shaughnessy
en 2001. Après sept recueils de poèmes, deux
romans et un recueil d’essais, Thomas McCarthy revient avec la préparation d’un nouveau
recueil intitulé Pandemonium.
Thomas est membre de l’Aosdána, l’Académie
irlandaise des arts et des lettres.

Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill published her first book
of poetry in Irish An Dealg Droighinn in 1981
and has published regularly ever since. She has
received many scholarships, prizes, and bursaries and has also won numerous international
awards for works which have been translated
many languages. She is a member of Aosdána
and was Ireland Professor of Poetry (20012004) and the first Professor of Irish Language
Poetry.
Joseph O’Connor was born in Dublin and educated at University College Dublin and Oxford
University. He is Professor of Creative Writing
at the University of Limerick. He is a member
of Aosdána, the Irish academy of writers and
artists. Among his many literary awards is the
Irish PEN Award for Outstanding Contribution to
Literature. He holds an honorary doctorate from
the National University of Ireland.

Pascale Pujol
Cécile Palusinski is an author known for her
studies of literature and painting. Part of her
career has been spent in contemporary art galleries and she has notably written a monograph
of the visual artist Flore Sigrist. She has also
published several books for children on the subject of art, including Garance et le Maître des
Couleurs. As a writer, she is president of the
association La Plume de Paon, which works to
promote the audio book, in particular through
a Francophone webportal. In 2013 she founded the training and consultancy firm Numered
Conseil dedicated to professionals in publishing
and the visual arts as they confront the digital
revolution.
For the past three years, Pascale Pujol has divided her time between writing and her role as an
economic and financial consultant with Secafi
Alpha. A former journalist, she has returned to
the literary scene with a new book, Petits plats
de résistance. This social comedy plunges the
reader into an intimate and hilarious world, full
of fabulous stories and humour all food lovers
will appreciate.

Cécile Palusinski est une auteure connue pour
ses études sur la littérature et la peinture. Elle
a effectué une partie de son parcours dans des
galeries d’art contemporain et a notamment
écrit la monographie de l’artiste plasticienne
Flore Sigrist. De plus, plusieurs de ses livres,
sur ce même sujet, ont été publiés pour la jeunesse dont Garance et le Maître des Couleurs.
Ecrivain, elle est également présidente de
l’association La Plume de Paon, qui œuvre en
faveur du développement du livre audio, à travers notamment un portail francophone numérique. En 2013, elle a créé l’agence de formation et de conseil Numered Conseil dédiée aux
professionnels de l’édition et des arts visuels
confrontés à la mutation numérique.

Alpha. Auparavant journaliste, elle réapparaît

Michael Cronin is Professor of Translation Studies at Dublin City University. Author of Translating Ireland: Translation, Languages, Identities (1996), Across the Lines: Travel, Language and Translation
(2000), Translation and Globalization (2003), Time Tracks: Scenes
from the Irish Everyday (2003), Irish in the New Century/An Ghaeilge
san Aois Nua (2005), Translation and Identity (2006), The Barrytown
Trilogy (Ireland into Film series, 2007), Translation goes to the Movies
(2009), The Expanding World (2012) and Translation in the Digital
Age (2013). He is a regular broadcaster on cultural affairs on TG4.
Jean-Philippe Imbert- Moderator (France)
Jean-Philippe Imbert lectures in Comparative Literature and Sexuality Studies at Dublin City University where he created the first MA in
Sexuality Studies of Ireland. He runs a Research Centre in Sexuality
Studies, called EROSS (Expressions, Research, Orientations: Sexuality
Studies). He has translated Thomas Kinsella’s Tain into French. Focused on Mexican and French literatures and their relation to teratology and the monstrous, he researches and publishes either on literary
and artistic representations of monsters and the monstrous in Mexican and French 20th and 21st century literatures, or on the relationships between sexuality, evil, trauma, art and literature.
Dominique Le Meur - Moderator (France)
Dominique Le Meur was born in Auxerre (France) in 1964 and has
been a lecturer at the University of Limerick since 1992. His first two
novels, Où vas-tu Irlande ? (1998), which was awarded the Prix des
Ecrivains Bretons in 1999, and Báine (2001), are both set against the
background of Northern Ireland’s troubled history. L’Eire des amants,
published in 2005, is set in Ireland and deals with the theme of the
unsaid through a devastating and passionate love story. With Retour
vers l’ailleurs (2009), and Irlande Nuit Celtique (2014) Dominique Le
Meur looks at the deep changes that have taken place in Irish society
over the last few years.

Sinead Mac Aodha - Moderator (Ireland)

Sinéad Mac Aodha is the Director of Literature Ireland, a governmentfunded organisation which promotes Irish literature abroad. Since
1995 Literature Ireland (formerly Ireland Literature Exchange) has
awarded 1650 translation grants in over 50 languages, including
over 250 titles in French. The organisation also regularly hosts literary translators in Ireland and organises the participation of Irish writers at events and festivals around the world. Before joining Literature
Ireland, Sinéad was the Literature Officer at the Arts Council. She is
currently working on a number of projects, including author events in
Shanghai, Berlin and Montreal.

Eamon O Ciosain - Moderator (Ireland)
Éamon Ó Ciosáin has translated modern Irish-language literature into
French and Breton. He first learned French at an Irish-medium primary
school in Dublin. He studied French and Celtic languages in Dublin
and Rennes, and obtained a doctorate on Irish migration to France
in the 17th century. Among other publications are a dictionary and a
study of the press in Irish. He currently lectures in French (and Breton)
in NUI Maynooth, and has published on Franco-Irish relations, especially on the historical aspect.
Jean-Michel Picard - Moderator (France)
Jean-Michel Picard was born in Marseille in 1952. He studied at the
University of Provence in Aix-en-Provence, at the University of Paris IVSorbonne and at the National University of Ireland, Dublin (UCD). As a
specialist in medieval languages and literature, he has published several books and numerous articles on Irish hagiographical literature,
on Hiberno-Latin language, and on the history of contacts between
Ireland and the continent during the middle ages. Jean-Michel Picard
is professor emeritus in the UCD School of Languages, Cultures & Linguistics, and a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

Geraldine Laurent - Musician (France)
Géraldine Laurent studied classical piano before turning to the saxophone. On completion of her studies she moved to Paris and launched
her career as a jazz saxophonist alongside a number of French musicians. Drawing on her rich experiences as a “sidewoman”, she made
her first recordings as leader from 2007 onwards. Quickly acclaimed
by the public and critics alike, lavished with awards, she has become
a firm fixture in the world of jazz, notching up numerous concerts and
recordings. Her latest album with a quartet was released in 2015 and
won the Charles Cros Academy’s Grand Prix for Jazz.
Anne Nakache - Actress (France)
After training as a classical actress at the Conservatoire Régional de
Versailles and the school of the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris,
Anne pursued her career in contemporary works produced by theatrical companies for the Paris stage. In parallel to her career as an actress, Anne studied Theatrical Arts at Université de Paris X Nanterre.
Currently a drama teacher and director with the company “So Wilde”
at the Alliance Française in Dublin, Anne is keen to share her passion
for the actor’s craft.
