L’établissement de partenariat pour une croissance durable a manifestement été l’aspect le plus remarquable de 2012. Nous sommes reconnaissants à la Fonda on familiale Tro er, la fonda on Eric T. Un changement très significa f, pour la croissance à long terme et la stabilité de la Fonda on, a été d’obtenir un local bien à nous. Comme l’a dit éloquemment Virginia Woolf il y a près de 100 ans, PRESIDENT

me for the PEF and file boxes somewhere else in the building. This year, the LBPSB has generously donated a large office, with comfortable room for 2 desks and plenty of filing cabinets. Our new execu ve assistant Sue Grand, who began in January, 2012, has taken full advantage of the space to create a filing system of our own: the detailed history and status of every fund and scholarship we manage complete and instantly Building partnerships for sustainable growth was clearly the more significant aspect of 2012. We are indebted to and humbled by the Tro er Family Founda on, the Eric T. Webster Founda on, the Montreal Real Estate Board Founda on for Kids, the Fonda on Jeunesse Vie and the Bank of Montreal Founda on for their significant contribu ons and commitments to programs for our students. A most significant change, one for the long term growth and stability of the Founda on has been a room of our own. l’espace physique réservé transcende le matériel et permet à l’esprit et à l’âme de prendre leur essor. Depuis le déménagement sur l’avenue Brookdale, la FPE se trouvait là où il y avait un bureau de libre. À certains moments, les dossiers étaient rangés dans le roir du bas de l’aire de travail d’une employée de la commission scolaire travaillant à temps par el pour la Fonda on et dans des boîtes ailleurs dans l’édifice. Ce e année, la CSLBP nous a fait don d’un grand bureau, avec assez d’espace pour deux tables de travail et tout plein de classeurs. janvier 2012, a su profiter de ce lieu pour créer notre propre système de classement : l’historique et le statut détaillés de chaque fonds et chaque bourse que nous gérons sont instantanément accessibles. Son sou en chaleureux, au téléphone ou par courriel, envers les enseignants et les adjointes dans toutes les écoles est ines mable et sans pareil. Le tout

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math: the future economy and sustainability of Canada and the world depend on a popula on literate in these fields, and on engineers and scien sts with crea vity and a global outlook. PEF is suppor ng hands‐on curricular and extra‐
curricular STEM through support for compe on entrants and through a board‐wide ini a ve in robo cs. Assis ng at science and robo cs compe ons, the students have fun and hugely benefit from the collaboraƟƟon: while everybody likes to win, they also gain so much more from the cross‐
fer liza on of ideas and solu ons that these events afford. We are well posi oned to con nue on the road to major growth in private and public dona ons and innova ve new projects on which we have embarked. Expo‐Sciences Grâce au sou en con nu et accru de fonda ons et d’associa ons privées, pour la deuxième année la FPE a pu payer les frais d’inscrip on des équipes de nos écoles secondaires à la Finale régionale de Montréal d’Expo‐Sciences. Les inscrip ons ont augmenté de 17 projets provenant de 5 écoles à 26 projets provenant de 6 écoles, une augmenta on de 50% en une année. Ian Vaillancourt, un élève de 5e Secondaire de l’école secondaire polyvalente Pierrefonds a gagné la compé on de la région de Montréal grâce à son projet de jardin ver cal. Avec ce projet, brillamment applicable pour donner une culture à haut rendement dans des milieux urbains à grande densité, il a également par cipé à la finale canadienne de la compé on. Avec l’aide du gouvernement fédéral et de la FPE, Ian présentera son projet à l’Expo‐
Sciences mondiale qui se endra à Abu Dhabi en avril 2013. Des compé ons de robo que ont lieu à Montréal pendant les mois d’hiver. La présidente de la Fonda on, Mme Barbara Freeston, y a assisté pour en connaître les coûts et la logis que. Pour l’année qui vient, la FPE paiera aussi l’inscrip on pour toute équipe d’école secondaire qui voudrait par ciper aux compé ons Robo que CRC ou Robo que Junior en 2013. Board‐wide Robo cs at the Elementary level Incorpora ng robo cs into the elementary curriculum: team work, problem solving, manual dexterity, reading (the manual), wri ng (up the project), computer programming (a robot doesn’t do anything un l you program it), applying math and engineering skills, engaging the bored gi ed student and the reluctant learner, the boys and the girls alike ‐ there is no single tool be er at integra ng it all. With the balance of the 2011
‐12 Experien al STEM money, PEF purchased a classroom set of Lego NXT robot kits. The LBP elementary science and robo cs consultant, Sophie Lussier, trained students and teachers simultaneously, six weeks at a me, in several schools. Through PEF’s Grants to Schools and Classrooms, we also supplied kits to 3 schools, and helped equip a first me high school entrant in the CRC Robo cs Compe on. Working closely with LBPSB’s Educa onal Services Department, this 21st century teaching tool will soon be exploited in all our elementary schools. A n n u a l R e p or t

On le sait maintenant dans
les écoles, les enseignants
comptent sur nous : nous
avons reçu des demandes
pour cinq fois ce montant.
Nous déployons beaucoup
d’efforts pour nous assurer
que tout le personnel et
les membres des conseils
d’établissement
connaissent les critères :
des projets de classe
innovateurs, durables, de
nature entrepreneuriale
pour lesquels la FPE
achète du matériel qui
restera en permanence
dans les écoles, à la
disposition des futures
cohortes.
De même, la variété et la
créativité des propositions
augmentent
chaque
année. Par exemple,
l’achat très abordable
d’outils de jardin, de filtres
et de plantes a permis à
des classes de différents
niveaux de l’école secondaire
John-Rennie de restaurer un
marais de mauvaises herbes
en une paisible oasis
comprenant un étang et un
jardin, telle qu’elle existait
lorsque l’école a ouvert ses
portes en 1955.

ONGOING PROGRAMS
All of the projects and en‐
deavors previously associat‐
ed with the PEF con nue simultaneously with the foci discussed above. The PEF manages a growing number of memorial schol‐
arships and bursaries in many high schools, works closely with the Grad com‐
mi ees in each school to ensure that the cheques and cer ficates are at the right place at the right me, and assists new donors in defining their criteria and the nature of the scholar‐
ships they endow. The PEF con nues to dis‐
tribute a Margaret Manson Learning Awards to a gradu‐
a ng student who has over‐
come a par cular challenge in every elementary and secondary, adult educa on and voca onal centre in the LBP. Working closely with the Montreal Real Estate Board Founda on for Kids, and ac vely seeking addi onal donors, the PEF funds the growing Venture Camp for children with affec ve diffi‐
cul es, now in its 4th year. PARTNERSHIP
In its first year as a member of MLS, the Montreal Impact expanded on its exis ng partnership with the Lester B. Pearson School Board and the Pearson Educa onal Founda on. As well as student scholarships and player mentors, large blocks of seats were made available to our community, staff, students and families at a reduced price for the home opener and the game against the L.A. Galaxy at which David Beckham fulfilled everyone’s expecta ons with an exci ng goal in the last minutes. The Impact players visited many of schools providing soccer WITH THE
ps and reminding students why staying in school is paramount. Pearson Founda on manages the cket sales and in return, 20% of the revenues were donated I M PAC T
back to the Founda on. With soccer the fastest growing team sport in Canada for girls and boys, women and men, we hope this connec on will con nue to thrive for many years. PUBLIC EDUCATION IS A PUBLIC TRUST
Through a commitment to public education and the promotion of learning for all, the
Foundation believes in enhancing the opportunity for all students to become life-long learners,
self-assured, respectful and responsible to their community.

Recognizing that government funding of public education is finite, the Foundation supports
students and furthers this goal by supplying seed money to a broad array of projects generated
by the teachers and administrators of the LBP community.

Par son engagement envers l'instruction publique et la promotion de l'apprentissage pour tous,
la Fondation croit possible d'améliorer la possibilité pour tous les élèves de devenir des
apprenants pour la vie, sûrs d'eux, respectueux et responsables envers leur collectivité.
Reconnaissant que le financement gouvernemental de l'instruction publique est restreint, la
Fondation soutient les élèves et favorise cet objectif en fournissant des subventions de
démarrage à toute une gamme de projets initiés par les enseignants et les gestionnaires de la
Commission scolaire Lester-B.-Pearson.
