Andreas Vesalius symposium “Anatomy, art and the body”
Op 18 september organiseert de Belgische Ambassade samen met het Departement for
Neuroscience & Pharmacology van de Universiteit van Kopenhagen een symposium rond
Andreas Vesalius, naar aanleiding van de 500ste verjaardag van zijn geboorte.
Andreas Vesalius werd in Brussel geboren in 1514, en verwierf al snel internationale
bekendheid in de medische wereld. Zijn meesterwerk, De Humani Corporis Fabrica, is één van
de meest invloedrijke werken ooit over de menselijke anatomie. Voor het symposium werden
Belgische, Deense en andere internationale Vesalius-specialisten uitgenodigd om niet alleen
het belang van deze vooruitstrevende wetenschapper voor de hedendaagse geneeskunde te
belichten, maar ook het belang van Vesalius in het linken van geneeskunde en kunst.
Het symposium is gericht op een breed publiek, niet enkel uit de medische sector, maar
eveneens wetenschappers, artiesten, historici, filosofen en antropologen.

Symposium Andrea Vesalius “Anatomy, art and the body”
Le Département de Neuroscience et de Pharmacologie de l’Université de Copenhague organise,
avec l’Ambassade de Belgique, un symposium autour d’Andreas Vesalius, à l’occasion du
500ème anniversaire de sa naissance.
Andreas Vesalius est né à Bruxelles en 1514 et a très vite connu la renommée internationale
dans le monde médical.
Son chef d’œuvre, De Humani Corporis Fabrica, est l’un des ouvrages les plus influents en
matière d’anatomie du corps humain.
A l’occasion de ce symposium, des spécialistes de Vesalius venant de Belgique, du Danemark
et d’autres pays sont invités afin de s’exprimer au sujet de l’importance de ce scientifique
innovateur pour la médecine actuelle mais aussi d’évoquer l’importance de Vesalius dans un
contexte mêlant art et médecine.
Le symposium s’adresse à un public large, pas uniquement au milieu médical, mais s’élargit
aussi au milieu scientifique, à des artistes, des historiens, des philosophes et des
anthropologues.
La participation au symposium est gratuite moyennant une inscription avant le 12 septembre.

The Andreas Vesalius 500th birthday symposium “Anatomy, art and the body”
On 18 September, The Department of Neuroscience & Pharmacology at Copenhagen University
is organising a symposium on Andreas Vesalius, with the support of the Embassy of Belgium in
Copenhagen.
Andreas Vesalius was a Belgian scientist who became most famous for his progressive
publication De Humani Corporis Fabrica. During the symposium, Belgian, Danish and
international specialists will not limit the focus to Vesalius the scientist and his legacy today,
but will also concentrate on how Vesalius' work was important in linking medicine and art. The
symposium targets a broad audience,
not only people working in the medical field but also basic scientists, artists, historians,
philosophers and anthropologists.
