On the 12th of July, a hero was born. For some of us, this day has no particular significance, but it has given birth to a new era. Malala Yousafzai is one of the few people on this planet to stand up for her beliefs and face discrimination against women in Pakistan. Not only was she a figure in her country, but she also became an international feminist. Malala Day is a symbol of peace, equality and courage. Whereas most students try to miss school when they have the opportunity, Malala is fighting for her right to education since she was eleven. She made several speeches, started a blog, informed people about her situation in Pakistan, got shot numerous times, and yet she is still sixteen. World leaders all agree that this teenager isn’t a regular sixteen year old, she’s more than that, she’s the only source of light that illuminates the cities of Pakistan that has been invaded with injustice and discrimination for thousands of years. There is a fire burning inside her making her accomplishments even greater every day. The first thought that comes to mind when we think of Malala is: how could such a young girl make big changes across the world? How could a sixteen year old influence and affect the hearts of millions? There is only one answer to these questions: determination, strength, courage and intrepidity. On the 9th of October 2012, The Taliban tried to stop this step towards freedom and equality, they shot Malala three times but she survived. No matter how many times they tried to get in her way, the Malala phenomenon survived and grew stronger every time. She once said during a speech after being shot: ‘’they thought a bullet would silence us but they failed. Out of their silence came, thousands of voices. We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silenced”. Yousafzai has been recently voted the person of the year by Time Magazine next to Nelson Mandela and Pope Francis. She is one of the most influential women in the world. Nowadays, most women in media are famous for their appearances and good looks not for their accomplishments and changes that they brought to society. Miley Cyrus has lately caught the attention of everyone with her shocking performance at the VMAs, since then she has been in the spotlight and made every single person know her and listen to her music. She sacrificed her dignity and her pride for fame and money. Cyrus is more known than Malala but their images are completely different. Malala has brought to women a whole new image while Miley seems to turn it into a sexual object. After this long journey, Malala kept on fighting for her rights and never forgot where she came from and never got trapped in fame and power like most people would have been. She is still working on making her ambitions come true and giving women the importance they deserve to have. The 12th of July, Malala day takes place. The 12th of July is a celebration for every woman fighting for her rights, for every woman trying to get an education, for every woman trying to reach the same level as men. Malala declared in one of her UN speeches:”Malala day is not my day. Malala day is the day of every woman, every boy, every girl that raised their voice for their rights”. She confirms that the best weapon to establish equality and abolish discrimination is education. What we can learn from her story is that we are never too young to make a change. Peux-tu me répondre ? FLEIFEL Layal “Rest In Peace. Not In Pieces” A car bombing which targeted moderate Lebanese politician Mohammad Chatah marked Beirut on the 27th of December. The bloody scenario, we are used to, continues as so many victims die in vain. Mohammad Chaar, a sixteen year old teenager, is one of those victims. He was out with his friends having fun. A few minutes before the bombing his friend, Omar Bekdash, had sent me a picture of them. I had replied telling him to enjoy their time and to say hello to the handsome guy wearing red and, by that I meant Mohammad. And just like that a couple of minutes later, the very innocent good looking soul had left the world for one reason: going out with friends at the wrong time, the wrong place, perhaps. The selfie Omar sent me went viral on social networks because, in the background of the picture, the vehicle that was loaded with explosives appeared. After Mohammad’s tragic death occurred, his friends took matter to hands. On Monday 29th of December, exactly two days after the explosion and a day after Mohamad Chaar was announced dead, a march was organized by them where more than 300 teenagers walked in peace together not only to give their farewell to a fellow citizen but also to send a message to the Lebanese society that we are against this corruption. The march was a great day for the Lebanese youth but we refused to stop there! We had to make our voice heard and where better to do that than in social media sites. Many blogs shared their opinion about what’s happening in this country taking the example of Mohammad Chaar to emphasize their point and to call for a revolution. On twitter many hash tags concerning that issue were trending worldwide such as #PrayForMohammadChaar and #RIPMohammadChaar to show their support to his friends and family. Lebanese tweeps also started trending #notamartyr by which they meant that they won’t accept dying as an innocent bystander victim anymore. In fact, one of the best tweets is the following: “It’s rest in peace, not in pieces.” It’s so meaningful. On the other hand, people across the world sent pictures of them holding a paper on which is written their message of support. Many videos and songs were posted on Youtube as a tribute to him. His friends made an NGO named YUL, Youth United for Lebanon to work on more projects for a better future. YUL started by printing “Mohammad Chaar 27” on red bracelets and selling them to give the money for charity. Let’s hope they won’t back up, and for that they need everyone’s support! Teenagers are calling the Lebanese society to take action. Enough people have died in vain. It’s sad to see people saying that they got used to the bombings and they love life so they just continue partying and ignoring what’s going around them. It just shows how selfish they are. How can you even sleep at night knowing that a mother is crying her eyes out for losing her child because some stupid person had pressed a button? It’s time for Lebanese to unite. It really is the right time for a revolution! Say no to a corrupted government! Say no! And remember, it’s better late than never. Working out Working out is a must. Whether at home or at the gym, it should be a priority for every human being capable of doing a physical effort. Why do most people hate working out? Is it because of the fatigue afterwards? The pain? The soreness? You've heard it many times before: Working out is good for you and sitting around watching TV is bad. But besides the obvious fact that it helps you burn off your unsightly excessive fat, why is it so good for you anyway? In this article, we are discussing the most common advantages of working out. Firstly, although it may seem like common sense knowledge, studies linking regular exercise and improved sleep patterns are fairly recent. These studies have shown that moderate 20-30 minute workouts three to four times a week help you sleep much better. Secondly, lots of people lose some of their of their aerobic capacity (around 10%) each year after the age of 30. However, regular exercise can actually make you more aerobically fit as you get older. Thirdly, your joints become less flexible, your bones lose density, and your lean body mass decreases as you get older. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to slow or prevent muscle, joint and bone problems. In addition, numerous studies have proven that people who work out on a regular basis have better memory, reaction time and concentration than their inactive correlatives. Furthermore, how many times have you skipped the gym because you were too debilitated to work out? But when you decided to go for it despite your fatigue, haven't you felt much more awake and energized afterwards? People who work out regularly have more energy, strength and endurance to get through their daily activities than non-exercisers. In another hand, regular exercise can increase your sexual drive, activity and satisfaction. Physical endurance and muscle tone improve sexual functioning, which increases blood flow to the genital area. Moreover, exercising reduces stress and anxiety by diminishing electrical activity in tense muscles as soon as you finish your workout, which makes you less hyperactive and skittish. And finally, the best reason of all to work out regularly is that it reduces your risk of many deadly and serious diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, colon cancer, breast cancer, stroke, heart attack, and arthritis. Now you know why working out is good for you. So start working out on a weekly basis. If you can't find your motivation, try working out with a partner such as a friend or a family member. Michael Ayache From sweet teen to sexpot We all remember the sweet Disney star every little girl used to look up to, don’t we? After years of being Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus decided to go for a change. She decided to break out from her Disney image and attract a more mature audience. It all started a few years back, when the 20 year old star released her “Can’t be tamed” album, she decided to take a new direction. When she got the new haircut and the new look, she was the center of attention and her pictures travelled all over the social media. She then performed on the MTV VMAs 2013 and surprised people from all over the world due to her twerking and inappropriate moves towards Robin Thicke. She acted all “Lady Gaga” and “Madonna”; no one expected this from her. That’s when we all knew she was ready for a change. The star didn’t want to be seen as Hannah Montana anymore, she wanted to show people what she was capable of. Her new album, “Bangerz” showed a totally different side of her. In her songs “Wrecking Ball” and “Adore you”, the intimate lyrics touched her audience. She talked about her breakup with her ex fiancé Liam Hemsworth and made it clear that she was going through a tough time. Her relationship with Liam went public, and her breakup as well. Despite the pain she was going through, she thought of a way to attract more viewers through her videos. She sure did pass through a tough time when she was experiencing her breakup with Liam, but she used it to gain more followers on twitter, more views on her Youtube videos or even get more famous. Through social media, people knew about her personal life and she was able to become the center of attention. The media is obsessed with everything she does especially that she’s growing up in the public’s eye. Her videos broke the Vevo record and she gained more and more followers every single day. She even thanked haters for contributing to the Vevo record. “My whole thing is that haters are going to hate, but haters are also going to click on your YouTube video to watch it. I don't really care - you helped me break the record. You were watching just to hate on me, and now I hold a record - so, I win." the 20 year old star said. She is only trying to make a fortune out of her career. But does going through a tough time give you the right to do things you are not allowed to do? Especially when you’re in a position that can influence many people, teens in particular? When asked about her being a bad influence to the youth, Miley said “Excuse me, but I am not parent of anyone!” She clearly doesn’t care about others’ opinions, which makes her think she is doing the right thing. We’ve all heard about how she’s gone crazy from twerking to smoking pot on stage; she even admitted that it was real weed and that it seemed “funny” to smoke it on stage. But why is it that everyone talks about her doing this when Rihanna and Lady Gaga did worse? For example, no one talks about how Rihanna rolled a joint on her bodyguard’s head while sitting on his shoulders at the Coachella last year! Miley is just another target of the media. Despite the fact that her videos contain nudity and twerking, people should understand her point of view and not judge her because of her actions. She may be acting wrong but she’s another star who’s growing. Even though she decided to show people this image of her, she certainly knows what she’s doing. She can make a change because she and only she is responsible for her actions. The 2013-14 campaign is considered by many to be one of the most competitive NBA seasons ever and the regularseason has not let basketball fans down. Even though a number of unfortunate superstars have been pegged with injuries (Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose etc.), the level of play has not disappointed. Let’s take a closer look at the top 2 ranked teams of each conference: Indiana andMiami, Oklahoma City and San Antonio. *All stats are accurate as of April the 5th Indiana Pacers: Current Record and Eastern Conference Rank: 53-24 (68.8%) – 2nd in the East - Indiana has been playing so well that they’ve built a strong case throughout the season that they, and not Miami, are the best team in the East. Paul George has proven that he is a legitimate superstar, averaging 22.3ppg and playing sensational defense yet again, earning him consideration for both MVP and Defensive Player Of The Year (DPOY). The Pacers also own by far the best defense in the league, holding opponents to almost 92ppg, in large part thanks to their other DPOY candidate; center Roy Hibbert, who is 3rd in the league in blocks (2.5 blks/game) behind the New Orleans Pelicans’ Anthony Davis (2.9blks) and Oklahoma City’s Serge Ibaka (2.6blks). The world can’t wait to see the rivalry between Indiana and Miami continue after a competitive 6 game series in 2012 (that Miami won 4-2) and a spectacular 7 game showdown last year that ended in the Heat’s victory (4-3) yet again. Indiana is a far better team this year which only serves to make things even more interesting in what’s going to be quite a battle in the playoffs. Miami Heat: Current Record and Eastern Conference Rank: 52-23(69.3%) – 1st in the East - The back to back defending champions are playing great basketball again this year. The core of Miami’s championship team is practically unchanged and the big 3 of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh is still playing at a high level. Lebron is rolling since last year’s MVP season, averaging almost 27 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists allwhile shooting a crazy 57% from the field. If he keeps that rate up he’ll become one of only 3 players in NBA history to average 26ppg on 57% shooting or better (Shaquille O’Neil and Kevin McHale are the other two). The quest for a third straight championship is the hardest obstacle the Heat has faced since Lebron and Bosh joined Wade in 2010. Because of their aging roster, Miami has made it clear that their main goal during the regular season is to remain healthy in time for the playoffs. Therefore, Wade (almost 20ppg-5apg5rpg) is sitting out a number of games in order to rest his career bothering knees. The end of the season is approaching and with everybody trying to knock the Heat off their throne the playoffs promise to be quite a show. Oklahoma City Thunder: Current Record and Western Conference Rank: 55-20 (73.3%) – 2nd in the West - The 2012 NBA Finalists came into this season with the sole goal of returning to the NBA finals after their disappointing end of last year. However, their objective has been jeopardized by Russel Westbrook’s injuries. Westbrook underwent 2 surgeries in summer because of an injury in last year’s playoffs. Yet, Russel came back this season earlier than anybody expected and showed his worth by averaging 21 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in 25 games, before failing to another injury that kept him out until after the All-Star game. While everybody expected them to falter, Kevin Durant (32.1ppg, 7.6reb, 5.6assists) carried the team on his shoulders during his teammate’s absence and maintained their great record. KD’s playing the best basketball of his stellar 6 year career and is on the brink of winning his first MVP award. He also broke Michael Jordan’s record of most consecutive games with more than 25 points (40 games). OKC is undeniably one of the most dangerous teams in the league and they’re definitely amongst the favorites for the title again this year. Just imagine how they’d be like if they hadn’t traded James Harden (25.3ppg) away to the Rockets last year. San Antonio Spurs: Current Record and Western Conference Rank: 59-17 (77.6%) – 1st in the West - The Spurs have been one of the most consistent franchises in NBA history. In fact they haven’t had a year with fewer than 50 wins overall since the shortened 1999 season. Their ageless 37 year old superstar Tim Duncan has led them to 4 championships during that span and he is looking for more. With the help of his 2 longtime teammates, Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentinian Manu Ginobili, along with a cast of young motivated players like Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, the Spurs seek to avenge last season’s finals loss to the Heat. Coming into this season with a chip on their shoulders, San Antonio has stormed its way towards the best record in the league by sticking to their brand of basketball all while resting their aging stars as much as they can. In fact, the spurs are playing so well they racked up 19 games in a row before they saw their streak end to the hands of OKC on April the 4 th. To sum it up, the road back to the Finals is going to be a hard and grueling one but San Antonio knows, and has what it takes to make it back, yet again, to the summit of basketball. Nadim El-Kak
