“espace cultures“ seeks to add a cultural
dimension to the main tasks of the University
of Luxembourg, namely learning and research.
With this in mind, “espace cultures“, runs
and coordinates cultural, intercultural events
and contributes to life on campus, so as to
› promote and improve the quality of life at the UL as well as the interaction with the local community
› broaden horizons amongst UL members
(students, doctorates, administration,
professors, researchers, …)
› boost cross-cultural dialogue
› contribute to an exchange of ideas aimed
at developing culture in Europe and the concept of European citizenship
UNIVERSITY ENSEMBLES
Culture is mostly defined by the creativeness of
our society. If the level of culture, education and
intellectual life rises, citizens will understand,
manage and solve their daily problems much
easier and face life with greater confidence and
understanding.
L‘Université est en plein mouvement et la rentrée
académique se déroulera à Belval. Ce nouveau
haut lieu du savoir permettra de raviver davantage
cette ancienne friche industrielle, témoin de notre
patrimoine.
directed by Julia Pruy and coached by Philippe Partidge
However, the meaning of culture is much wider
and deeper. Civilizations are formed by what man
has said and done since thousands of years ago
and which, up to nowadays, have been accepted
and absorbed by human societies and have been
added to in their habits, thoughts, memories,
actions, visions and creativeness.
More than ever before, essential ‘cultured’ diplomacy has a vital role to play in international relations enabling us to appreciate and approve points
of commonality and where differences appear,
to tolerate or even understand the motivations
and humanity that underlie them.
It is a project of the Cross-Border Network of
History and Arts. You are interested in Design,

‘Creating human bonds through Cultural
Diplomacy’
When: May 24th – 26th 2017
Where: Luxembourg-Belval
& Luxembourg-City
Cultural Diplomacy may best be described as
a dynamic process, which is based on and utilizes
the exchange of ideas, values, traditions and other
aspects of culture or identity, whether to strengthen
relationships, enhance socio-cultural cooperation
or promote national interests.
Cultural diplomacy can be practiced in establishing,
developing and sustaining global citizenship by way
of culture, art and education...’
Je félicite l‘initiative « Espace Cultures » pour son
travail. Qu‘elle aide à donner du profil au nouveau
campus et de lui insuffler une belle portion de
culture.
The basic nature of civilization rests on the
creation of ‘invisible lines of force’ which unite
mankind through the respect of others and their
differences. Taming our differences begins by
approaching others while striving to understand
and appreciate their essence and culture.
Maggy Nagel,
Ministre de la Culture
The dialogue on the significance of culture for
fostering global citizenship comes in the context
of a wavering support for the value of a liberal
education.

The Luxembourg University Choir is a blend of
energetic voices sharing harmonies that inspire the
Luxembourg community. The Choir is blossoming
into a multinational group notable for its willingness
to perform various arrangements, in a diverse set
of musical genres. Along with smaller performances
scattered throughout the year, they culminate each
academic semester with a range of concerts showcasing their complete selection of works (classical
to contemporary). The choir is open to everybody
but admission only on audition!

The University of Luxembourg offers to the
University community and their neighborhood the
possibility of attending a series of artistic encounters at lunchtime. Our aim is to offer high-quality
music, dance, theater, poetry sensations with
renowned artists or ‘artistes en herbe’.
CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLE

The events are open to everyone.
This should be an inspiring lunchtime break!

Mise en voix
The “mise en voix“ is an opportunity to discover
dramaturgic texts. Writers, directors and actors
work in close interaction over a week and present
a public lecture at the end.

I strongly believe that cultural diversity and
diversified cultural expressions are among the
most wonderful and precious treasures of mankind built up in the ‚Curriculum Vitae‘ of human
development and that cultural diversity creates
visionary identities, which distinguish one nation
or ethnic group from another and makes our world
so unique.
“Les must”
Visits to national and international political
institutions, such as the Luxembourg Parliament,
the Council of State, the Town Hall, the Economic
and Social Council, the European Institutions in
Luxembourg, in Strasbourg, and Brussels.
… was founded at the University of
Luxemburg on November 14th 2014,
as a cross-border association by
students and administrative representatives of the Universities of
Lorraine (Metz), Luxembourg and
Saarland.
The newly created structure wants to develop and
promote the creative work of students within the
Greater Region and beyond. Transnational guest
performances, coproductions and symposia are
planned – a sustainable development of exchange
and cooperation within the Greater Region is the key
concern of the association. Students support
students, by means of their own gathered experiences, advice and a helping hand, as well as
financial resources, if possible.
The establishment in 2010 and since then the alternating organization of the annually occurring
Student Theatre Festival GrAFiTi by the partner
universities, marks a first milestone of the
association work. Ensuring the continuity of the
festival is one of the main objectives of GrAFiTi asbl.
Since this year’s festival was held from June, 10th
to 14th, in Saarbrücken, the preparations for next
year already started: in 2016 the festival will be
based in Metz, organized by the local student
theatre association TUM (Théâtre Universitaire
de Metz) in cooperation with GrAFiTi asbl.

Region asbl a.s.b.l.
The Chamber Music ensemble is generally formed
after the start of the semester. This year we would
like to try to create a project ensemble together with
musicians from the Conservatory. A pianist, winds,
brass, string players of all ages are encouraged
to participate. The music styles will be defined
depending upon on the instruments. Playing level,
age, experience and commitment to an established
rehearsal schedule are key factors in the formation
of the new group.

Many of us agree that culture is considered as a
complex process of distinctive spiritual, material,
intellectual and emotional features that characterize each individual and that have created
a distinctive image of each country and served
as a solid foundation for social development.
NEW PROJECTS
This project is a «mobile
university» which
explores scientifically and
artistically subjects such
as cultural identity, democracy, freedom, social
responsibility and European consciousness on a
split route from the eastern Border of the European
Union to the Normandy.

PUBLIC ART EXPERIENCE
"Public Art Experience" is an art residency program devised
for Belval that aim to be a model project of urban development.
As a public contracting authority, Fonds Belval is under the
obligation to invest in art according to the terms of the Law of 30 July 1999. The sums dedicated to art
are budgeted in relation to the investments generated by the architectural project and are considerable.
The City of Science offers a unique opportunity to develop a public art project by actively engaging with
artists and the public and by embracing an approach firmly rooted in the history of a given place and
era. The artistic project for the City of Science will therefore follow an approach focusing on continuous
action in a constantly changing social and cultural context and aiming to shape the cultural identity of
the community. The first residency of 9 selected artists from 540 applicants will start in September 2015.
Under the title "BE Have" it aims to reconnect art and society by centering the debate on clearly defined
subjects while giving artists the possibility to express themselves freely by contributing their individual
perspectives. In the frame of the project is foreseen to set up a special programme offering the University
of Luxembourg community various opportunities to meet the artists.
DANCE CLUSTER
directed by Caroline Kaufhold & Joëlle Trauffler
The DanceCluster, is a multicultural dance group
constituted by members of the University of
Luxembourg.
The idea is to learn one from each other and create
together in a climate of trust and fun some special
dance pieces which will be performed throughout
the year. The individuality of each participant is
requested.
