WGT 1 NEW VISUAL METHODS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES // NOUVEAUX METHODES D’ANALYSE VISUELLE EN SCIENCES DES RELIGIONS Hubert KNOBLAUCH (Institut für Soziologie, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany) [email protected] The Visibility of the Invisible. Video Analysis of Marian Apparitions // La visibilité de l’invisible. L’analyse vidéo des apparitions mariales. KNOBLAUCH, Hubert and Sabine PETSCHKE (Technical University Berlin) [email protected] In 1999, we witnessed a series of Marian apparaitions at Marpingen, a place where such apparitions already in the nineteenth century had occurred. The immediate popularity of these apparitions proved the importance of such phenomena for popular religiosity. As part of the popularity, events like these nowadays are also recorded audiovisually. In this presentation, we will focus on the question how Marian apparitions are constructed. How do visionaries as well as other participants create and maintain that such apparitions occur. And in which ways does the design of audiovisual representations account for this particular kind of event. We will attempt to answer these questions in applying (and demonstrating) a method of videoanalysis developed and used in a variety of settings. In a more wider angle, the paper addresses the question what constitutes religious communication. Waiting for ... Theoretical accounting of an imposed situation // Attendre quelque chose... Considération théorique d’une situation imposée PFADENHAUER, Michaela (University of Dortmund) [email protected] “800 persons are waiting; they are waiting for hours. They wait in a huge hall on metal seats. They wait in the heat of the sun. They wait for more than an hour”. I will present bits of a videotape that documents waiting – waiting for the pope. The video is one datum of a research project on the organisation of the World’s Youth Day at Cologne with the papal visit. It will be shown how waiting is provided with meaning. « 800 personnes attendent. Vision, Videos and focussed Ethnography. A video-performance-analysis of a religious experience // Image, Vidéos et ethnographie. Analyse vidéo d’une expérience religieuse SCHNETTLER, Bernt, (Technical University Berlin, Institute of Sociology) [email protected] The availability and widespread use of audiovisual recording devices is changing the character of ethnographic research. Extensive corpus of data can be generated in relatively short-term, focussed fieldwork. Nevertheless, the methods of analysing visual data still remain in an experimental stage. The paper demonstrates a methodological approach called video-performance-analysis. This approach combines methodological principals and proceedings from genre-analysis, sociological hermeneutics and CA. Rather than discussing the advantages, implications and requirements in general, the paper will illustrate the analytical work of video-performance analysis by a case study. The material is taken from recent research on contemporary visionary experiences in Germany. It represents the videotaped record of a »deep-trance vision« by Uriella, the spiritual leader of the NRM »Fiat Lux« and one the most famous contemporary religious visionaries in Germany. The analysis reconstructs the ways in which this specific religious experience of transcendence is being performed in order to be convincing from the followers’ perspective. Methodically, it will differentiate between the inner context, the level of interaction and the outer context of this video fragment. The inner context comprises textual, gestural, mimic and prosodic aspects of the communication; the intermediate level the setting and decorum, and the outer context social embedding of this »transcendent« communication and its filmic presentation. Collage, habitus and religious field // Collage, habitus et champ religieux Bremer, Helmut (Universität Leipzig, Institut für Praktische Theologie, Abt. Religions- und Kirchensoziologie) [email protected] The contribution wants to present a special method of collecting and interpreting visual data, which is created during extended group discussions. Based on these collages, the method allows a deepened analysis of the interrelation between habitus and religious orientation. It was developed in a research project, which – like Max Weber’s classic study - aimed at the interdependancy of social class and religion. Following the theoretical framework of “social milieus”, which is based on Bourdieu’s theory of “habitus” and “field” we were particularly interested in the attitudes to Protestant Church in present society. During the focus groups – we prefer to speak of “group workshops” – the participants are requested to create a concerted collage under a projective question by using a set of provided magazines. In our study the task was to sketch the vision and the desire of one’s “church of the future”. In order to be able to evaluate this kind of pictorial collages, we explored different methods in the field of image-based research and adapted them with regard to Bourdieu’s theory and to our specific empirical procedure and the underlying intentions. As far as our experience goes, our methodical approach particularly addresses the latent, pre-reflective and emotional parts of habitus, which always have been of particular interest to Bourdieu. Applying the outlined projective-visual technique allows a better understanding of the relationship different social milieus have to to the religious field as well as to the church in general. In the working group we would like to introduce our research method and give some practical insight into the procedure of evaluating this special kind of visual data by presenting some collages.
