Topic
The social economy or social and solidarity economy (SSE) always existed among the people
to help, join, to share their ideas and their money, to survive, live better or get organized
professionally. Today, the SSE includes the private or public organizations which try to
reconcile the economic activity with social utility, by subscribing to founding principles: the
search for a collective utility, the non-profit or limited profit and democratic governance with
the primacy of the people over the capital: “1 person = 1 voice”, and the implication of the
stakeholders.
Definitions of the SSE vary internationally and among countries. On the practical level
however, the attempts of economic cooperation between producers or consumers took place
almost everywhere over the centuries. Some countries designate the SSE by “social
enterprises”: they pursue an objective of general interest, without an objective of maximizing
the profit. They often present an innovative feature, through products or services which they
offer, and the modalities of organization or production which they use and often call on to
weakened actors from society. Doing so, they contribute to social cohesion, to employment
and to the reduction of disparities.
At the moment, 14,5 million Europeans work in the field of SSE, that is, 6,5% of the working
population of the EU, and the number of workers in the field is strongly growing, passing from
11 million in 2002-2003 to 14,5 million in 2009-2010. In a difficult economic and social
environment, for which our current societies have to face to raise tomorrow’s challenges, the
SSE appears as a sustainable and responsible solution. The SSE brings a different way of
doing which has to be meaningful and calls on to fundamentally humanist notions of mutual
aid, pooling ways of living better or getting professionally organized and stimulate the active
participation of citizens.
There are no readily made solutions in the SSE, the solutions must be adapted to the culture
and to the local conditions. However, it is useful being able to exchange on best practices and
to spread information by creating special networks which feed the local action projects, and
widen the field of initiatives. Furthermore, an approach of the SSE at the European level can
bring an additional favourable context to its implementation, especially in the fields of
immigration, precariousness, education, global warming, social innovation, decentralized
cooperation. It allows to mutualize best practices and know-how. Besides, the mobility and the
exchanges at an international dimension allows to widen one’s spirit, to push back the limits of
one’s imagination in order to favour new ideas, and booster social transformation through
citizens’ initiatives. Moreover, initiatives multiply in the field, as more and more SSE projects
are born; it becomes useful and necessary to raise awareness about its principles, to form and
to accompany the implementation of such projects.
It is through this logic that we thought this training in cooperation with the city of Lille, in order
to mutualize the know-how, to introduce to the approach of project management in the field of
SSE, and to encourage the European cooperation in this field. The partnership with the twin
towns of Lille will allow us to ensure a better sustainability of our actions, and the strengthening
of cooperation. Faithful to our non-formal educational methods, our participants will acquire
skills and methods by practicing, by setting up their own SSE project corresponding to one of
the four important topics: the economy, the environment, social, and the culture.

Main Objectives:
-
-
-
Creating a space of reflection about the SSE, its principles and its development in
Europe
Creating a space to share experiences between participants and facilitate the
exchange of best practices and mutual development of skills, in order to implement
quality SSE projects
Introducing and framing participants to SSE project management
Stimulating the youth’s active participation within society, through setting up local
projects, European partnerships, and by enabling them to act as multipliers while back
in their local community.
Developing and encouraging the cooperation between participants and partners in
order to support innovative projects by creating a European network of partners sharing
SSE ideas and reinforcing the development of cooperative projects.
Working methodology:
The program of the course will be based on non formal education and will be conducted using
an interactive and participative approach. Active group/team work, creation of collective
project, outdoor activities and visit on local initiatives and plenary discussions, as well as
theoretical inputs and technical learning will characterize the program of the course in order to
cover all aspects of the project themes. Special attention will be paid to the fact that the
competences and the knowledge gained and transmitted during the course remain sustainable
and transferable. This will be achieved by setting up enough space and time for reflection and
evaluation, by providing expertise, comprehensive documentation, handouts and guidance
from the professional trainers’ team. A finished workshop pack of methods will be given to the
participants at the end of the training so that they can use it at the return in their own countries.
Tools will be taught and, on the basis of their already existing projects in their sending
organizations, participants will be also invited to share good practices, to exchange useful
information, and work intensively in order to improve their training skills with youths in regards
to the subject of this training course.
