What‛s the problem?
There are three different words for “again” in French.
How do I distinguish between them?
You’re right; encore, encore une fois and de nouveau all mean “again”, though encore
more frequently means “still”:
Tu travailles encore
à cette composition
You‛re still working at that essay?
Otherwise, encore une fois and de nouveau will do very nicely, thank you:
Il a essayé encore une fois
de nous rejoindre.
He tried again to get to us.
Elle a étudié le document
de nouveau.
She studied the document again.
However, the neatest and most idiomatic way to say “again” in French is to use the prefix
re- where possible. Here are a few examples:
We will do this work again.
Nous allons refaire ce travail.
He‛ll call again later.
Il va rappeler plus tard.
I‛ll get dressed again.
Je me rhabillerai. (odd looking word, isn‛t it?)
Please begin again.
Recommencez, s‛il vous plaît.
See you again.
Au revoir.
When you want to say “no more”, the sentence is negative; simply use ne...plus...
Il ne va plus dîner dans
ce restaurant.
