January 2013
Dear Reader.
If you are reading this, it means, among other things, that you survived the festivities, the "over-the-top" season. That time of the year
when nothing is done in moderation and it is full of overeating, over drinking and overspending ... But it will mainly mean the following:
the day after the 13th baktun, the date 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan Calendar did not bring the end of the world, that there is life "the way we
know it" after the 21st of December 2012, and that after all, everything was part of a big misunderstanding, a wrong interpretation or
maybe even an overreaction?
Any how, here we are inaugurating a new year, and the apocalyptical (or apocryphal) news won´t even just allow us to enjoy January. This
time it is coming from NASA itself, so we will have to give it a bit more credit, don´t you think?
NASA acknowledges that the sun is waking up and gearing up for a massive solar flare, an X-Class solar storm, which would disrupt
communications, electronic devices and possibly power grids all over the world.
"Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through the earth´s atmosphere to physically
affect humans on the ground, however, when intense enough, they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and
communications signals travel. This can disrupt radio signals anywhere from minutes to hours".
Can you really imagine your world without electricity? We know just about a few people that would prefer the Mayans to be right, rather
than living without the telephone "for anywhere from minutes to hours"
However, as far as we know, and since you are still reading this, there hasn´t been an X-Class solar flare, electric power is still running so
you will be able to enjoy the latest on electric actuators by SMC.
We welcome you to a very electric e-Matters, introducing, as said, the latest in electric actuators and winter advice for static electricity.

Cher Lecteur,
pendant quelques minutes, voir quelques heures.

Innovations at a glance
SMC is on the pulse with new step motor driver
LECPA Series - Step Motor Driver - Pulse Input Type
2013 starts with the latest position controller; the LECPA is a
controller for pulse train control.
SMC offers a Pulse Input Type - Step Motor Driver, LECPA, allowing
control of position, speed and force by using a positioning unit with
pulse signals.
It is framed in our Level 2 controllers, which means it is easy and
quick to program either by an easy-setting software or a teaching box.
This leads to labour savings.

STATIC ELECTRICITY ON THE RISE AS WINTER

11-LEFS Series - Slider Type Electric Actuator - Clean Room
Specifications
Slider type, compact electric actuator capable of the best performance in Clean Room areas. In
order to fulfil Clean Room Specification ISO Class 4 (Class 10), the 11-LEFS has built-in vacuum
piping, which acts like an exhaust, minimising external particle generation.
The latest version of the LEFS retains all the benefits of the standard version. It offers a top speed
of 1000mm/s and acceleration and deceleration of up to 5000mm/s² when using the AC servo
motor driver, and 500m/s and 3000m/s² when using a DC step/servo motor controller.
It is also capable of handling up to 60 kg, position repeatability of ± 0.02 mm, but now it has
been designed to bring all these advantages into clean room areas.

STATIC ELECTRICITY ON THE RISE AS WINTER
TEMPERATURES FALL
Static electricity is one of those invisible problems that often
goes undiagnosed and causes manufacturers costly
headaches in terms of lost production and product rejects.
And it´s an issue that will only get worse as winter sets in and
temperatures continue to plummet. Because cold air holds
less water vapour, it means it is less conductive therefore
encouraging static electrical conditions.
However, there are simple and effective remedies to cure
static electricity thanks to SMC´s Ionizer range. The products
on offer deliver measurement, control and removal solutions
for static electricity leading to reduced production costs,
improved performance, increased efficiency and improved
safety.
LECS Extension - AC Servo Motor Driver CC-Link Direct Input Type and
SSCNET III Type
One of these solutions was recently successfully
implemented for an SMC customer that specialieses in water
bottle manufacturing.
The smooth position, speed and force control with no need for further adjustment of the LECS,
and now network-compatible.
Plastic, along with rubber, glass or pitch have a tendency to
produce static electricity as they act as insulators and can
hold a charge rather than act as conductors of electricity. In
this instance, plastic bottles were charged with static
electricity during the fabrication process, causing costly
problems for the manufacturer once they joined the transport
line. The static charge being stored in the surface of the
bottles caused them to repel each other and lose their
vertical positioning, leading to the production line being
shut down while the bottles were manually re-aligned.
Series LECSC - CC-Link Direct Input Type
• Suitable for multipoint positioning, with wiring savings.
• Possible to set position data/speed data, and operation start/stop.
Series LECSS - SSCNET III Type (Mitsubishi Electric´s dedicated communication protocol)
• Optimum for interpolation systems, as it uses fiber optics for communication.
• Easy to connect, enhanced noise resistance, and reduced wiring with SSCNET III
optical cable.
The first fast delivery products of 2013 are the Electric Grippers, LEH Series
Although the customer did have a static removing device in
place, it wasn´t capable of removing the static charge in the
time set by the production process, which requires a high
speed transport system. SMC was able to step in and provide
a solution with its market leading bar type ionizer, the IZS31,
which has a proven track record of removing static electricity
extremely quickly. In this case, the IZS31 had no problem
neutralising the static charge within the time set by the
application.
SMC´s electric grippers main advantage is that all series count with a drop prevention function. This is achieved thanks to
their self-lock mechanism. Besides the advantages as regards to prevention, it brings to your application a plus in terms of
energy saving, and ultimately diminishing the overall costs.
The result has transformed the water bottling plant´s
production efficiency, removing disruption to the process and
the need for human intervention.
All models with LECP6 controller; step data input type.
