Students registered in 2007-08 who have completed the residency
requirement in a thesis program, and who submit their theses, along with
Nomination of Examiners Forms, to the GPSO (Thesis Office) on or before
the last working day of August 2008 are not required to register for the
2008-2009 academic year.

HGSS Conference
This year, the HGSS conference is earlier than usual, and is being held on
October 3rd at Thomson House (11:00 am – 5:00pm).
The topic selected for this years conference is MicroRNA and our keynote
speaker this year is Frank Slack from Yale University, along with a range
of presentations from, Edwin Wang, Nahum Sonenberg, Thomas
Duchaine and Francois Major.
In our efforts to improve the event, we have expanded it to include 5
speakers and will be providing lunch along with the traditional wine and
cheese.
As there is limited seating, please RSVP by September 20 to

REGISTRATION – NEW STUDENTS
Registration dates: August 5, 2008 – September 2, 2008
New students must register on Minerva for both the Fall 2008 and Winter
2009 terms by adding the registration confirmation course REGN RCGR
for both the Fall 2008 (term 200809, CRN 2334) and the Winter 2009
(term 200901, CRN 2262) terms, in addition to any other regular courses,
during the following registration period, to avoid a late registration fee.
New students in the MSc (ONLY) in Human Genetics program must
register for :

HGEN 680 (CRN 1873) M.Sc. Thesis Research in 200809 (*please note
change from last weekly bulletin*)
NB: These two registrations will cover the lab work that you will be doing
“in the lab” during the 1st year (2008-2009) – you will not be required to
“attend a class” for these two registrations.
HGEN 692
New students In the Department of Human Genetics are required to take
HGEN 692 Human Genetics. The first class will be September 3rd at 9:00
am in Room N5/1 Stewart Biology Building. If you have any questions

HGEN-692 (CRN 5261): Human Genetics (3 credits)
Emphasizes the principles and practice of human genetics, including an
overview of the fundamental aspects of human genetics pertaining to
chromosomes and mutations, population, cancer and developmental
genetics, and the inheritance of complex traits.
New students who have not registered by September 02, 2008 may still
access Minerva to register late ($100.00 late fee) from September 03,
2008 to September 16, 2008.
All registered students may add/drop courses for the Fall 2008
term until September 16, 2008, and until January 20, 2009 for
the Winter 2009 term.
Please note that students who have outstanding holds or fees and fines
from previous terms will not have access to registration or course change.
Please also note that successful completion of registration is contingent
upon acceptable academic standing in the previous session.

The McGill Office for Students with Disabilities is looking for
grad students for our Mentor/tutor Program for 2008-9.
OSD Mentor/tutors provide individual, ongoing academic support to some
of our first year students. The mentorship requires a commitment of 2
hours a week for at least a semester, pays 12$ per hour, and can be a
work study position for those who qualify via financial aid. We aim to
make matches of grad students with undergrads by the end of
September.
The purpose of the mentorship is to provide role models of student
success, problem solving, and solid study/learning skills to new McGill
undergrads with learning disabilities and/or ADHD. There are 2 training
sessions, and ongoing supervision is provided by the OSD. Last year’s
mentors found the experience very rewarding.
If you are a ‘good student’, and would enjoy working in a helping
relationship, and are keen on learning about LD and ADHD in adults,
please come to the OSD, Rm.3100 Brown Building (beside financial Aid)
and fill out an application or go to Minerva and apply via Work Study.

With a view to responding more efficiently to inquiries received at the beginning
of each term by departments and by the Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies Office,
the GPSO has prepared the following reminder summarizing current policy with
respect to fees and registration procedures for McGill graduate students wishing
to take French- or English-language courses offered by McGill.
Afin de répondre de façon plus efficace aux questions qui lui sont adressées
chaque rentrée ainsi qu’aux départements, la Direction des études supérieures et
postdoctorales a préparé le document ci-dessous, qui résume la politique en
vigueur pour ce qui est des droits de scolarité et des procédures d’inscription
s’appliquant aux étudiants des cycles supérieurs souhaitant s’inscrire à un cours
d’anglais ou de français offert à McGill.
Policy respecting English- and French-language courses / Politique relative aux
cours de français et d’anglais
1) This policy does not apply to postdoctoral candidates.

2) Courses taken at the Centre for Continuing Education of McGill are not
covered by this policy, nor are courses taken at any other university under the
Quebec Inter-University Transfer Agreement.

3) Masters and doctoral students registered in a research program (thesis or nonthesis) and who pay flat-rate tuition may take English or French as a Second
Language courses at the English and French Language Centre of McGill (or
language courses in the Department of French Language and Literature) without
paying extra tuition fees. Graduate students registered in a certificate or diploma
program, or those registered in a degree program for which tuition is paid on a
per-credit basis, will be charged fees for these courses on a per-credit basis.
Les étudiants de maîtrise et de doctorat inscrits à un programme de recherche
(avec ou sans mémoire/thèse) et qui paient des droits forfaitaires peuvent suivre
les cours de français et d’anglais langue seconde offerts par le Centre
d’enseignement du français et de l’anglais (de même que les cours de langue
offerts par le Département de langue et littérature françaises) sans avoir à payer
de droits additionnels. Les étudiants des cycles supérieurs inscrits à un
programme de certificat ou de diplôme, ou à un programme pour lequel les droits
sont calculés en fonction du nombre de crédits, devront payer des droits
additionnels pour les cours de langue. Ces droits seront facturés selon le nombre

4) The English and French Language Centre offers two English as a Second
Language courses designed specifically for graduate students: ESLN 590 –
Writing for Graduate Students and ESLN 650 – Pronunciation and
Communication. There is no placement test for either course. Enrollment in both
courses is limited. Students may register for these courses on MINERVA.
Le Centre d’enseignement du français et de l’anglais offre deux cours d’anglais
langue seconde conçus spécifiquement pour les étudiants des cycles supérieurs,
le ESLN 590 – Writing for Graduate Students et le ESLN 650 – Pronunciation

5) The English and French Language Centre also offers undergraduate-level
English and French language courses. Because enrollment in these courses is
limited, priority is given to undergraduate students. Graduate students hoping to
register in one of these courses must take a placement test (see
www.mcgill.ca/eflc/placement/ for details and dates) and provide the Centre with
written permission from their supervisor. If accepted, students will be given a
Permit to Register by the Centre in order to register for these courses themselves
on MINERVA.

6) Graduate students hoping to register in a language course in the Department of
French Language and Literature must take a placement test and provide written
permission from their supervisor. For information on placement test dates, call
(514) 398-6885 or e-mail the Undergraduate Studies office at
[email protected]. Graduate students who are admitted into one of
these courses will not be able to add it directly to their record via MINERVA;
they will need to fill out and sign a paper MINERVA form (available from their
unit’s graduate program coordinator or secretary). The form must be signed by
the unit’s graduate program director and should indicate clearly that the course in
question is or is not required for the student’s program. The unit will then
forward the form for approval to the Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies Office,
Records & Fees section.
Les étudiants des cycles supérieurs souhaitant s’inscrire à un cours de langue
offert par le Département de langue et littérature françaises doivent se soumettre
à un test de classement et obtenir une autorisation écrite de leur directeur ou
directrice de recherche. Pour connaître les dates des tests de classement, il faut
s’adresser au Secrétariat des études de premier cycle, par téléphone (514-3986885) ou par courriel ([email protected]). Les étudiants admis à un cours
du Département de langue et littérature françaises ne peuvent pas s’y inscrire directement
au moyen du système MINERVA, ils doivent remplir et signer un formulaire MINERVA
papier (disponible auprès du secrétariat des cycles supérieurs de leur unité) et le faire
signer par le directeur ou la directrice des études supérieures de leur unité. Le formulaire
doit également indiquer si le cours en question est obligatoire ou non dans le cadre du
programme auquel est inscrit l’étudiant. L’unité achemine ensuite le formulaire au
Bureau des études supérieures et postdoctorales, Section de la gestion des dossiers
étudiants.
7) WARNING: Graduate students should be aware that although the grades and
credits received in these language courses will not count towards their program
CGPA (unless the courses are part of their program), they will be recorded on
their transcript and cannot be removed. Before committing to a language course
not required by their program, graduate students are strongly advised to consult
their supervisor in order to determine whether adding in this way to their
workload is appropriate. Graduate students should also be aware that withdrawal
from an undergraduate course is subject to the same deadlines and limitations
that apply to all courses (see 2006-2007 or 2007-2008 Graduate and
Postdoctoral Studies Calendar, General Information, Regulations and Research
Guidelines, section 6.7.1). The fact that the course is not required will not be
considered a valid reason for asking for a refund after the deadline, for a late
withdrawal, or for removal of the course (or the mark associated with the course)
from the student record.
MISE EN GARDE : Bien que les notes et les crédits obtenus pour les cours de
langue ne comptent pas dans le calcul de la moyenne cumulative générale des
étudiants des cycles supérieurs (à moins que ces cours soient obligatoires dans le
cadre de leur programme d’études), ils figureront sur le relevé de notes officiel et
ne pourront en être retirés. Il est donc fortement recommandé aux étudiants des
cycles supérieurs de consulter leur directeur ou directrice de recherche afin de
