Main study areas and research topics
Expertise and fundamental understanding of thin film growth mechanisms, in relation to desired functional and
microstructural properties (both vacuum and chemical deposition processes) - In-situ measurement of internal stress
development during thin film deposition - Thin film mechanics : nano-indentation, adhesion, micro-mechanical lab-on-chip
Green process development (acidogenic processes, biomass pretreatment, gasification,..)
Estabilishing a methodology for adressing sustainable development problems based on a life cycle engineering approach
and on a strategy for materials and processes selection
Development of High Performance Metallic Alloys and microstructure Materials for energy conversion (new metallic
alloys for the recovery of low grade heat in industrial processes) Developement of new metallic and composite materials for
structures lightening and durabilty
Development of eco-efficient processes for sustainable industrial chemical and biochemical engineering involves three
core areas: development of last generation separation technologies, evaluation of existing processes in the industry, and
application of thermodynamics from the molecular to the industrial scale. (contact : prof. Patricia Luis
