Patient Instructions for
Outpatient Cervidil
You have been given a medication called Cervidil to soften your cervix.
This is the first step of inducing labor. The small piece of mesh that
has been placed in your vagina has medication in it that will
slowly be released over the next 24 hours. It has a string
attached to it so it can be easily pulled out.
You may have a shower, eat normally and resume your
usual activities. Do not have sex. When toweling off or after
going to the bathroom carefully pat the area around where the
insert is (do not wipe) so you do not accidentally remove it.
Return to the hospital if:
1. Your baby isn’t moving
2. Your water breaks
3. The Cervidil falls out
4. In 18 - 24 hours if nothing has happened yet
Remove the Cervidil and return to the hospital if:
1. You are in labor (contractions every 5 minutes
lasting 1 minute in length)
2. You are having heavy vaginal bleeding
3. You are having severe abdominal or back pain
Questions:
If you have any questions or concerns after you arrive
home, call your doctor’s/midwife’s office
If you are unable to get a hold of you doctor/midwife
or the doctor/midwife who is covering for him/her

Directives pour les patientes non hospitalisées
qui reçoivent du Cervidil
Vous avez reçu un médicament appelé Cervidil pour ramollir le
col de l’utérus. Il s’agit de la première étape pour le
déclenchement du travail. Le petit tampon qui a été inséré
dans votre vagin contient un médicament qui sera
graduellement libéré au cours des 24 prochaines heures.
Un cordon y est attaché pour en faciliter le retrait.
Vous pouvez prendre une douche, manger normalement et
faire vos activités habituelles. N’ayez pas de rapport sexuel.
Après être allée à la toilette, tapotez délicatement la région
vaginale (ne vous essuyez pas) pour éviter de retirer
accidentellement le tampon.
Retournez à l’hôpital si :
1. Votre bébé ne bouge pas.
2. La poche des eaux se rompt.
3. Le Cervidil est ressorti.
4. Rien ne se produit après une période de 18 à 24 heures.
Retirez le Cervidil et retournez à l’hôpital si :
1. Le travail est commencé
(des contractions aux 5 minutes qui durent 1 minute).
2. Vous avez des saignements vaginaux importants.
3. Vous avez des douleurs abdominales ou dorsales
intenses.
Questions :
Si vous avez des questions ou de préoccupations après
que vous arriviez à la maison le bureau de votre
médecin/sage-femme.
Si vous ne parvenez pas à joindre medecin/sage-femme
ou le médecin/sage-femme qui le remplace, appelez

retournez à l’unité de triage obstétrique.
