Lake Chad, the second largest wetland in Africa, is an important international freshwater resource that depends for
about 95% of its supply from the Chari Rivers system. The population within the basin from Cameroon, Chad,
Central African Republic, Niger and Nigeria is estimated at over 20 million people. The associated floodplains of
the Lake Chad cover almost 100,000 km2 where water demand is increasing while drought and desertification are
attenuating water flow in the three sub-basins that constitute the Lake Chad basin. The basin hosts biodiversity of
global significance while the floodplains support a wide range of economic activities such as recession agriculture,
pastoralism forest regeneration, fish breeding and tourism potential.
Le lac Tchad est le second plus grand lac d’Afrique, il est une importante ressource
internationale d’eau douce et dépends pour 95 % du fleuve Chari. La population du bassin est
estimée à plus de 20 millions de personne sur les pays du Cameroun, du Tchad, de
Centrafrique, du Niger et du Nigeria. Les plaines inondables du lac Tchad couvrent presque
100 000 km2, la demande en eau de ces zones augmentent alors que sécheresse et
désertification atténuent le débit de l’eau des trois sous bassins qui constituent le lac Tchad. Le
lac abrite une biodiversité remarquable, les plaines inondables permettent des activités
économiques diverses, de moins en moins d’activité agricole mais le développement du
pastoralisme en forêt, de l’élevage de poisson, et d’un potentiel touristique.
The region is characterized by profound incidence of poverty and environmental fragility. As a consequence 20 million
people have no alternative for their survival. Over exploitation of wetlands and lowering of basin yield due to
drought and human impacts are threatening livelihoods of the population. Lake Chad now covers merely 1,350
km2 down from 25,000 km2 40 years ago.
La région est marquée par la pauvreté des populations et un environnement fragile. 20 millions
de personne n’ont d’autre alternative que de survivre. La surexploitation des zones de marais
et la baisse de rendement du bassin successives à la sécheresse et à une démographie
élevée menacent l’existence des populations.
Le lac Tchad couvre actuellement difficilement 1 350 km2 contre 25 000 km2 il y a 40 ans.
