Preview 2015 European Artistic Gymnastics Individual Championships
EUROPE’S BEST GATHER IN MONTPELLIER
Lausanne (SUI) / UEG Office, 10th April 2015:
Next week, on Wednesday 15th April, Europe’s best artistic gymnasts kick off the
European Championships at the Park&Suites Arena in Montpellier (FRA).
38 federations are sending male gymnasts to Montpellier. In the lead-up to these
Championships, Oleg Stepko (AZE) posted the highest all-around score, a 90.600
at the Baku test event at the beginning of March. This was closely followed by
Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev’s 90.597 at the American Cup. Max Whitlock (GBR) who
took silver AA at the 2014 World Championships, hasn’t competed all-around yet
this year because of illness but is scheduled to compete all 6 events in Montpellier.
Other contenders for the all-around gold are 2013 European Champion David
Belyavskiy (RUS) and his teammate Nikolay Kuksenkov, Sam Oldham (GBR) and
French national champion Axel Augis. Verniaiev is also a strong contender on
pommel horse which he won at the World Cup event in Cottbus (GER), vault and on
parallel bars where he is European and World Champion. Pommel horse Olympic
champion Berki is at home nursing a shoulder injury leaving the door open for British
teammates Whitlock and Smith, Hidvegi (HUN), Tommasone (FRA), Busnari (ITA),
Truyens (BEL), Bertoncelj (SLO) and Ude (CRO). On floor the specialists Zapata
(ESP), Kosmidis (GRE), Shatilov (ISR) and Fahrig (GER) will take on defending
champion Ablyazin (RUS) who also holds the titles on rings and vault. On rings his
main challenge will come from Petrounias (GRE), Van Gelder (NED), junior
European Champ Tulloch (GBR), Olympic medalist Morandi (ITA), former European
champions Radivilov (UKR) and Aït Saïd, and Pinheiro (FRA). On vault look out for
a spectacular show-off between Ablyazin, Radivilov, Verniaiev, Fahrig, Thomas
(GBR) and Medvedev (ISR). European, World and Olympic high bar Champion Epke
Zonderland (NED) is looking to take another title on his signature event but also on
parallel bars where he is planning to upgrade his difficulty. With the absence of
Zonderland’s main rivals, Germany’s Hambuechen and Brettschneider, his
challengers on high bar will be Moznik (CRO), Schroé (BEL), teammate Deurloo and
Shatilov (ISR). The host nation has a strong team with a good mix between
experience (European medalists Aït Saïd, Pinheiro and Tommasone) and young
talent (Augis, Zona, Hrimeche)
In the women’s competition 33 federations will be represented. With the absence of
household names like Larisa Iordache (ROU), Aliya Mustafina (RUS) and Elisabeth
Seitz (GER) the door is wide open for new stars to emerge. Russian Champion Maria
Kharenkova leads the all-around challenge, expecting a strong Erika Fasana (ITA)
after her strong bronze-medal winning performance at the American Cup last month.
Newly crowned British Champion Amy Tinkler can certainly rise to the occasion, as
well as Romania’s Diana Bulimar, Eythora Thorsdottir (NED) and Giulia Steingruber
(SUI). Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari who tied for gold on floor last year, has suffered from
mononucleosis so we’ll have to wait and see how that will affect her performance.

Steingruber has been on fire at the beginning of this season winning vault and floor,
and silver on beam at the Doha World Cup. She is defending her vault title and looks
to medal on floor as well. Her challengers on vault are Fragapane and Ellie Downie
(GBR), Sosnitskaya (RUS), Pavlova (AZE) and Van Klaveren (NED). On uneven
bars Becky Downie (GBR) tries to defend her title against Spiridonova (RUS) and
Adlerteg (SWE). Many gymnasts hope to challenge Kharenkova, the 2014 European
Champion on beam: Bulimar, Munteanu (ROU), Martin (FRA), Millousi (GRE),
Wevers (NED), Schaeffer (GER) and Ferlito (ITA) all have a chance. Floor sees the
return of 2011 floor World Champion Afanasyeva (RUS) who will battle with Ferrari,
Fasana, Bulimar, Pihan-Kulesza (POL) and Thorsdottir.

Competition format: This is an individual Championships only, no team competition
will be held. A men’s team may consist of max. 6 gymnasts, a women’s team of max.
4. During qualification max. 4 gymnasts per country can compete on each
apparatus. In finals this will be limited to 2 per country in each event.
Wednesday 15th: women’s qualification (CI)
Thursday 16th: men’s qualification (CI)
Friday 17th: women’s and men’s all-around finals (CII)
Saturday 18th: event finals day 1 (CIII)
Sunday 19th: event finals day 2 (CIII)

LES MEILLEURS EUROPEENS REUNIS A MONTPELLIER

La semaine prochaine, le mercredi 15 avril, les meilleurs gymnastes européens en
artistique donneront le coup d’envoi des Championnats d’Europe à la Park&Suites
Arena à Montpellier (FRA).
38 fédérations envoient des gymnastes masculins à Montpellier. À l’approche de
ces Championnats, Oleg Stepko (AZE) a inscrit le score le plus élevé en compétition
multiple, avec un 90.600 au test event de Baku début mars. Il était suivi de près par
l’Ukrainien Oleg Verniaiev avec 90.597 à la Coupe Américaine. Max Whitlock (GBR)
qui a remporté l’argent au AA aux Championnats du Monde en 2014, n’a pas encore
concouru cette année en raison de maladie mais sa participation aux 6 agrès est
prévue à Montpellier. D’autres candidats pour l’or au concours multiple sont le
champion européen David Belyavskiy (RUS) et son coéquipier Nikolay Kuksenkov,
Sam Oldham (GBR) et le champion national français Axel Augis. Verniaiev est
également un concurrent redouté au cheval-d’arçons qu’il a gagné à la Coupe du
Monde à Cottbus (GER), ainsi qu’au saut et aux barres parallèles où il est champion
d’Europe et du Monde. Le Champion Olympique aux cheval-d’arçons Berki est resté
à la maison prenant soin de son épaule blessée, ce qui laisse la porte ouverte aux
coéquipiers anglais Whitlock et Smith, Hidvegi (HUN), Tommasone (FRA), Busnari
(ITA), Truyens (BEL), Bertoncelj (SLO) et Ude (CRO). Au sol les spécialistes Zapata
(ESP), Kosmidis (GRE), Shatilov (ISR) et Fahrig (GER) essayeront de battre le
champion en titre Ablyazin (RUS) qui détient également le titre aux anneaux et au
saut. Aux anneaux, ses principaux concurrents seront Petrounias (GRE), Van
Gelder (NED), le champion européen junior Tulloch (GBR), le médaillé olympique
Morandi (ITA), les anciens champions européens Radivilov (UKR) et Aït Saïd, et
Pinheiro (FRA). Au saut, attendez-vous à une spectaculaire bataille entre Ablyazin,
Radivilov, Verniaiev, Fahrig, Thomas (GBR) et Medvedev (ISR). Le champion
européen, du monde et olympique à la barre fixe Epke Zonderland (NED) se prépare
pour gagner un autre titre sur son agrès de prédilection mais également aux barres
parallèles où il prévoit d’augmenté sa difficulté. Avec l’absence des principaux rivaux
de Zonderland, les allemands Hambuechen et Brettschneider, ses concurrents à la
barre fixe seront Moznik (CRO), Schroé (BEL), son coéquipier Deurloo et Shatilov
(ISR). La nation hôte à une équipe solide avec une bonne combinaison entre
l’expérience (médaillés européens Aït Saïd, Pinheiro et Tommasone) et de jeunes
talents (Augis, Zona, Hrimeche)
Lors de la compétition féminine, 33 fédérations seront représentées. Avec l’absence
des célèbres Larisa Iordache (ROU), Aliya Mustafina (RUS) et Elisabeth Seitz
(GER) la porte est grande ouverte pour permettre à de nouvelles stars d’émerger.
La championne russe Maria Kharenkova guide le challenge du concours multiple,
s’attendant à une Erika Fasana (ITA) en pleine forme après avoir gagné la médaille

de bronze le mois passé à la Coupe Américaine. Nouvellement couronnée, la
championne anglaise Amy Tinkler peut certainement saisir l’occasion, tout comme
la roumaine Diana Bulimar, Eythora Thorsdottir (NED) et Giulia Steingruber (SUI).
L’italienne Vanessa Ferrari qui s’est partagée la médaille d’or au sol avec Larisa
Iordache l’année passée ; a souffert d’une mononucléose nous allons donc devoir
attendre pour voir comment ceci affectera sa performance. Steingruber a été en
pleine forme au début de la saison en gagnant au sol ainsi qu’au saut, et l’argent à
la poutre à la Coupe Mondiale de Doha. Elle défendra son titre au saut et espère
également repartir avec une médaille au sol. Ses concurrentes au saut sont
Fragapane et Ellie Downie (GBR), Sosnitskaya (RUS), Pavlova (AZE) et Van
Klaveren (NED). Aux barres asymétriques Becky Downie (GBR) essayera de
défendre son titre contre Spiridonova (RUS) et Adlerteg (SWE). Plusieurs
gymnastes espèrent défier Kharenkova, la championne européenne 2014 à la
poutre : Bulimar, Munteanu (ROU), Martin (FRA), Millousi (GRE), Wevers (NED),
Schaeffer (GER) et Ferlito (ITA) ont toute une chance. Le sol voit le retour de la
championne mondiale 2011 Afanasyeva (RUS) qui concourra contre Ferrari,
Fasana, Bulimar, Pihan-Kulesza (POL) et Thorsdottir.

Format de compétition : ceci est uniquement un championnat individuel, sans
compétition par équipe. Une équipe masculine peut être constituée au maximum de
6 gymnastes, tandis qu’une équipe féminine est limitée à 4 gymnastes. Pendant les
qualifications maximum 4 gymnastes par pays peuvent concourir sur chaque agrès.
Aux finales, la participation sera limitée à 2 gymnastes par pays et par agrès.

Jeudi 16 : qualifications des hommes (CI)
Vendredi 17 : finales du concours multiple femmes et hommes (CII)
Samedi 18 : jour 1 des finales (CIII)
