With
the

group of personnel now
deployed to Kuwait, we
will continue to uphold
our first and most
important
priority;
support to our members
and their families. The
chain of command as well
as organizations like PSP
and the MFRC exist to
give you the support you
need, and we encourage
you to seek out as many
opportunities to engage
with them as possible.
One of the newest
support programs that
I want to highlight is
the 4 Wing Movie Club.
The club recently held
their official opening
with their first showing
of a children’s movie on
May 9.
Each week the 4

this opportunity are
welcomed.
This

it are in place to make
the lives of our members
and their families that

Chief and I would like
to recognize the selfless
efforts
extended
by
everyone
to
include
numerous volunteers who
support our community.
As
the
summer
months quickly approach,
we will be saying farewell
to some members and
their
families
and
welcoming new arrivals to
Cold Lake. Throughout
this time, the Wing Chief
and I encourage you to
enjoy what Cold Lake has
to offer.
Message du printemps de
l’équipe de commandement
de la 4e Escadre
Colonel
Eric Kenny,
commandant de
la 4e Escadre, et
Bob Viel, adjudantchef de l’escadre
Le temps doux du
printemps est arrivé à
Cold Lake et apporte
avec lui de nouveaux
départs et une période
de transition.
Il y a à peine
quelques semaines, la
4e Escadre accueillait
son premier contingent
de personnel déployé
de l’opération IMPACT,
lequel était composé de
nombreux
techniciens,
d’employés de soutien
et
de
commandants
qui ont probablement
vu Cold Lake pour la
dernière fois en octobre
l’an dernier. J’ai vu
personnellement
le
sacrifice et le dévouement
dont ils ont fait preuve
pour réaliser la mission
à l’étranger. Félicitations
à chacun d’eux pour leur
déploiement réussi, et
bienvenue à la maison.
En notre absence, des
membres du personnel de
la 4e Escadre ont assumé
la tâche de réaliser notre
mandat, notre mission
et nos priorités. D’après
ce que j’ai vu jusqu’à
présent, les membres
de la 4e Escadre ont
accompli cette tâche avec
un
professionnalisme
et
un
dévouement
sans égal, et je vous en
remercie.
Maintenant que je
suis de retour, je suis
ravi d’avoir l’occasion
enviable de diriger de
nouveau l’équipe de la 4e
Escadre et de la BFC Cold
Lake. Je tiens à remercier
personnellement le Lcol
Mullins et à souligner
ses contributions comme
commandant d’escadre
intérimaire durant mon
absence. En travaillant
en étroite collaboration
avec l’Adjuc Ere Viel, ils
ont permis la pleine
réalisation de la mission
et des priorités de la 4e
Escadre.
Avec le plus récent
groupe de membres du
personnel
maintenant
déployé
au
Koweït,
nous allons maintenir
notre première et plus
importante priorité :
appuyer nos membres et
leurs familles. La chaîne
de
commandement
ainsi que les organismes
comme les PSP et le
CRFM existent pour
vous donner le soutien
dont vous avez besoin, et
nous vous encourageons
à rechercher autant que
possible les occasions
d’interagir avec eux.
Un des plus récents
programmes de soutien
que je souhaite souligner
est le Ciné-club de la 4e
Escadre, qui a récemment
tenu
son
ouverture
officielle en présentant
pour la première fois
un film pour enfant le 9
mai.
Chaque semaine, le
Ciné-club de la 4e Escadre
présentera un film au
cinéma de l’escadre, et
ce, sans frais pour les
membres de l’Équipe
de la Défense et leurs
familles. Il vise à présenter
un film en anglais, un
film en français, un film
pour adolescents et un
film pour enfants chaque
mois; du maïs soufflé et
des boissons gazeuses
seront en vente à un prix
très raisonnable. Vous
n’avez qu’à montrer votre
carte de reconnaissance
UneFC et votre entrée
est gratuite. Ce Ciné-club
existe pour vous appuyer;
votre
rétroaction
et
vos idées sur la façon
d’améliorer cette activité
sont donc les bienvenues.
Ce programme de
soutien et d’autres du
même genre existent
pour améliorer la qualité
de vie de nos membres et
de leurs familles. L’adjuc
de l’escadre et moi
tenons à souligner les
efforts altruistes déployés
par tous, y compris par
les nombreux bénévoles
qui
appuient
notre
collectivité.
Avec
l’été
qui
approche à grands pas,
nous allons dire adieu
à certains membres et à
leurs familles et accueillir
de nouveaux membres
à Cold Lake. Pendant
cette période, l’adjuc
de l’escadre et moi vous
encourageons à profiter
de ce que Cold Lake a à
offrir.

Cold Lake is Full of
Cold Water.
The people who
named this place could
have called it anything.
Big Lake, Wavy Lake,
Sparkly Lake, Wet Lake –
they chose Cold Lake for
a reason.
Fifty members of
1 AMS people took
the plunge in the icy
waters of Cold Lake
last
Thursday
while
their comrades cheered
them on and donated
generously
to
the
squadron’s morale fund.
The event raised
about $3,000.
There was a great
atmosphere
at
the
Provincial Park beach for
the swim. Participants
wore costumes, there was
plenty of hot coffee and a
healthy fire was burning
to warm the swimmers
after their dip. Even in the
shallow water, safety was
a consideration: a SAR
Tech was on hand to help
anyone who might find
themselves in distress.
To bring you this
story,
your
reporter
stood in knee-deep
water for almost five
numbing minutes. When
I came out, my feet were
so thoroughly frozen I
could have walked across
broken glass and not felt
a thing. (I knew the job
was dangerous when I
took it.)
Those who took the
full-body plunge get full
marks for courage and for
squadron spirit.
The project was
the initiative of the
squadron’s morale fund
committee, chaired by
Sgt Fabio Palazzi. With
the blessing of LCol
Alexander and CWO
Fleet, the unit pulled
together
to
make
something good happen
for
themselves.
The
funds raised will support
unit social activities and
sports days.
“It’s all for the morale
of the squadron,” Sgt
Palazzo said. And in the
meantime, they had a lot
of fun.

To complete the
fitness
component,
participants
must
exercise for 21 straight
days, performing at least
21 minutes of physical
activity each day. If you
miss a day, you must start
from the beginning and
try again.
Regular exercise not
only improves overall
fitness, it helps to prevent
certain diseases. Heart
disease,
osteoporosis,
diabetes and some types
of cancer are among
the ailments that can
be prevented with a
healthy lifestyle, and that
includes regular exercise.
Healthy eating is also
important. The nutrition
element in this year’s
Wellness Challenge is
to eat one green and
one orange fruit or
vegetable every day for
21 consecutive days. As
with the fitness element,
if you miss a day, you
must start again.
Nutrients
found
in orange and green
vegetables are beneficial
for the eyes, bones and
heart, and can help
prevent some types of
cancer.

Things May Not Be
What They Seem
Tammy Buchanan,
Health Promotion
Specialist
In previous jobs, I
had to review contracts
for different entertainers.
Some bands or speakers
had unusual requests
such as exotic snacks,
a dozen black socks,
dimmed lighting in their
change room, or exactly
three water bottles beside
their microphone. In
the 1980’s, the band Van
Halen had a rider that was
over 50 pages requesting
all sorts of things. One
strange request was a
bowl of M&Ms in their
room with no brown
ones in the bowl! Venues
knew celebrities could
be extreme, but this was
ridiculous.
The
real
reason
for that seemingly diva
request was so the band
could tell with certainty
that the rider had been
read and followed. If
there were brown M&Ms
in the bowl, they would
know that the rider, with
all their safety requests,
had not been read in
great detail. This was not
a diva move but a risk
management move. It was
brilliant!
In 2009, Amazon
purchased an online
shoe store called Zappos
for more than a billion
dollars. The store’s claim
to fame was their customer
service. Their employees
were their greatest asset.
Zappos did not pay them
a lot, but they had a high
employee retention rate.
Once you were hired and
your training had begun,
the company offered you
a resignation package
of a few thousand
dollars to quit and agree
never to work for them
again. What kind of
company pays their new
recruits to quit? Only
a small percentage of
employees chose the cash.
Management considered
it a small price to pay
to preserve its culture
of excellent customer
service by getting rid of
unsuitable employees. It
was brilliant!
Two guys went to an
all-you-can-eat
buffet.
One sat with his back to
the buffet spread, and the
other sat facing the food.
Both got up and made
their way to the buffet
line. The first patron went
through the buffet and
looked at the offerings in
each section. He reviewed
the salad bar, the entrees,
specialty items, and took
a quick look at the dessert
bar. Then he returned
to the front of the line,
picked up a small dinner
plate, took the items
he had preselected the
first time through, and
returned to his seat. The
second patron went to
the buffet, grabbed the
larger dinner plate and
proceeded to scoop items
onto it, realizing halfway
through that his plate
was getting too full. He
sat down to eat the first
plateful. While eating, he
noticed people returning
for seconds, so he quickly
finished his first plate
and returned for more.
Who do you think would
be the thinner patron?
Sitting with your
back to the food, taking
a minute to preview the
buffet and using a smaller
dinner plate all add up to
less calories consumed!
Not much extra effort…
and it is brilliant!

Forgiveness

A

mark of any person
should be the presence
of forgiveness and the

anger and conflict in
their lives.
The
concept

reconciliation cannot be

situations reconciliation
will not be possible.
Reconciliation is a twoway process into which
I cannot force another
person. I can forgive,
but I cannot demand
that the other forgive me
in return. Forgiveness
is often defined as a
process of ceasing to
feel resentment against
someone, or of pardoning
someone.

HOROSCOPES
Capricorn - December 22 - January 19
Mayday, mayday, Capricorn. A colleague is in need of some
serious help. Do what you can. An event goes much more
smoothly than anticipated.
Aquarius - January 20 - February 18
Bravo, Aquarius. A plan fails, but instead of saying I told you
so, you step in and save the day. Big rewards are headed your
way…BIG rewards!
Pisces - February 19 - March 20
Nights out with a special someone are rare, so when the
opportunity arises, take it, Pisces. Fitness goals are met with a
change in routine.
Aries - March 21 - April 19
Ask, Aries. It never hurts to ask. The rumor mill kicks into high
gear at work. Listen and take note. There could be some truth to
what folks are saying.
Taurus - April 20 - May 20
Rejection can be tough, but not this week, Taurus. You’ll be
grateful for the reprieve. Friends drop by with spectacular news.
Time to get out the champagne.
Gemini - May 21 - June 21
A breakdown in communication at home leads to a fiery
outburst. It must be said in order for the situation to improve,
Gemini. A secret is kept.
Cancer - June 22 - July 22
What is good for the goose is good for the gander, Cancer. Stop
going out of your way so much for others. Prayers are answered
at home.
Leo - July 23 - August 22
Tsk-tsk, Leo. You knew better, but you went ahead and did it
anyway. Now it is time to pay the consequences. A switch in
personnel gets a project rolling.
Virgo - August 23 - September 22
Happiness comes from within, Virgo. Why are you looking for it
elsewhere? You can try whatever you want, but you will never
be satisfied until you fix what is within.
Libra - September 23 - October 22
Sudden moves are ill advised this week, Libra. Think before you
leap. The race to complete a project at work begins. Rally the
team and get a move on.
Scorpio - October 23 - November 21
A friend makes a complete turnaround. Congratulate them on
their success, Scorpio, but be wary. This isn’t the first time they
have done this.
Sagittarius - November 22 - December 21
Feeling hopeful, Sagittarius? So are others. This will be the
week that determines all. A freak accident at home leads to a
string of repairs.

Hi! I’m Skyler, a beautiful Husky cross, almost 2 years old. I
love cuddles and belly rubs! I like cats too, but they don’t seem
to know it. My perfect companion needs to be energetic and
should be ready to teach me some basic commands. Don’t
