Ballet Glossary – Grade 5 1st 2nd 3rd 4th open 4th crossed 5th Barre Demi / full pliés -­‐ half / full knee bends Full plies -­‐ Bend your knees sideways over your toes, keeping heels on the ground as long as possible, until thighs are horizontal & move back to your original position Battements – a beating movement Tendus – stretched En Croix – in the shape of a cross Slide your foot along the floor until fully stretched & close Grand battement – big beating movement devant (in front) à la seconde (side) & derrière (behind) Throw your leg from underneath keeping the knee straight & close with straight knees – forwards, sideways, backwards Battements glissés – to glide in 2nd from 1st Battements Fondus -­‐ to melt en croix en l’air Á terre – prepare foot to 2nd bring in to cou de pied foot flexed, en fondu & degagé & straighten This should have a feeling of resistance & both legs should straighten simultaneously En fondu – melting – a plié on one leg Battements frappés – to strike This is an exercise to strengthen your leg & foot.
