(continued) Students in grades K-6 participated in three (3) different hands-on math and science activities. These activities were presented by F.O.T. parents, HASD teachers and high school students, students and instructors from Penn State Altoona, Juniata College, Mount Aloysius College, Saint Francis University, and community volunteers with a strong background in math and/ or science. Some of the many topics presented this year included: Ziploc chemistry, wind turbines, endangered animals, polymers, weather , watersheds, fossils, birthday party chemistry, Kool-Aid chromatography, M&M math, tangrams, electricity, magnets, viewing cells under high tech microscopes, thinking fast math activities, and the human heart. To conclude the morning activities, an exciting physics demonstration was conducted by Dr. Richard Flarend’s “Lion Science”, from Penn State Altoona. The goal for M.A.S.S. is to develop a positive attitude for math and science in our students. From observing the eagerness and excitement in students participating in the many interesting activities and hearing the many comments such as “Cool!”, “Wow!”, “Neat!”, it was obvious this event has had a definite and positive impact on our students.
