P0102 Arthur Baldwinson Memorial Scholarship in Architectural History 1 Established in 1970 by an initial gift of $50 from the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Professor R.N. Johnson and in 1996 by a donation of $2000 from the estate of Mrs Elspeth Baldwinson. In 2002, Emeritus Professor R.N. and Mrs Jane Johnson endowed the Prize with a gift of $10,000 in memory of Arthur Baldwinson, distinguished Lecturer in the Faculty until 1969, in recognition of his work on Australian architectural history. The scholarship is awarded annually on recommendation of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture Program Coordinator to the student qualifying to graduate in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture who has the best record within the subject Architectural History and Theory, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P0188 Noel Chettle Memorial Prize in the Allied Arts 5 Established in 1978 by the offer of an annual donation of $500 from Mrs E.M. Chettle and endowed in 1984 with funds from her estate. The prize is in memory of her husband, Noel Chettle, and in support of his interest in the encouragement of youthful ideas in art. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Tin Sheds Gallery, a full-time academic staff member teaching in the Workshops, the Professor of Architecture and one other member of the academic staff of the Faculty of Architecture. Up to five prizes may be awarded to students from any Faculty of the University taking units from the Faculty of Architecture, other than a member of the full-time or part-time staff in the fields of fine arts, architecture and related fields, for a body of work in any field offered by the Workshops and completed within the year for which the prize is to be awarded, provided that the work is of sufficient merit. P0232 Rodney Connors Prize for Conservation Studies 1 Established in 1990 by a donation of $4000 from the friends of Rodney John Connors, BArch, who was prominent in the restoration of many historic buildings in NSW. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Heritage Conservation Program Coordinator to the student graduating in the Faculty with the most outstanding record in the Master of Heritage Conservation program, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P0235 Ethel M Chettle Prize in Architecture 4 Established in 1984 by a bequest of five percentum (5%) of the residuary estate of the late Ethel May Chettle, in memory of her husband, Noel Chettle, to create the Ethel M. Chettle Prizes in Architecture. The object of the prize is to recognise application to studies and ability. Awarded to four highly meritorious students who have met the requirements for the Master of Architecture at the University of Sydney. The prize to be awarded on the recommendation of a committee comprised of the Professor of Architecture, Master of Architecture Program Coordinator and the one other academic involved in teaching the Master of Architecture, who will give consideration to the students abilities, perseverance and effort throughout the course of study, provided the students work is of sufficient merit. The students nominated for the award of the prize shall not have received any other previous or concurrent prize while enrolled as a degree candidate in the Faculty of Architecture. The prize shall be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Sustainable Design Program Coordinator to the outstanding candidate in the Sustainable Design program, provided the student has completed at least 24 credit points and that their work is of sufficient merit. P0315 Sunlord Perpetual Prize in Architectural Design 1 Established in 1997 by a donation of $30,000 from property development company Sunlord Holdings Pty Ltd to establish the Sunlord Perpetual Prize in Architectural Design. The objective of the prize is to encourage excellence in architectural design among Master of Architecture students at the University of Sydney. The prize is awarded annually on recommendation of the Master of Architecture Program Coordinator to the outstanding architectural design student having completed one year of the Master of Architecture degree, provided the students work is of sufficient merit. P0489 Morton Herman Prize in Building Conservation 1 Established in 1980 by a donation of $2000 from Dr Morton Herman. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Heritage Conservation Program Coordinator to the top student enrolled for the degree of Master of Heritage Conservation whose performance in the area of building conservation in Australia is most outstanding, provided that the candidates work is of sufficient merit. P0555 Planning Research Centre Prize 1 Established in 1990 by the Planning Research Centre. The prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Planning Research Centre and two other academic staff from the Urban and Regional Planning and Policy discipline to the candidate for the degree of Master of Urban and Regional Planning with graduating with Honours with the best result in the Planning Dissertation, provided that the work is of sufficient merit. P0682 John Stephen Mansfield Prize in Urban Design and Planning 1 Established in 1965 under a bequest of $2000 by the late John Stephen Mansfield to provide a prize for the undergraduate student in the Faculty of Architecture most proficient in the subject then known as Town and Country Planning. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture Coordinator, to the student graduating Bachelor of Design in Architecture with the best record in the units of study in the urban design and planning subject area, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P0699 George McRae Prize in Architectural Construction 1 Established in 1924 by a gift of fifty pounds from the Officers of the Department of Public Works to establish an annual prize in the Faculty of Architecture in memory of George McRae, formerly Government Architect. The prize began as a book prize with a special bookplate, and is now a cash prize from a capital preserved trust. Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the principal lecturer in Architectural Construction, to the student qualifying to graduate Master of Architecture with the best average mark in subject(s) in architectural construction (currently Design Technology 1), provided the work is of sufficient merit. P0717 Lyle H Moore Memorial Prize in Housing Studies 1 In 1984 the immediate family of Mr Lyle H Moore, CBE, donated $2000 to the University to establish a prize in the memory of Mr Moore who made a major contribution to the educational and other standards in the property field, especially through the Universitys Extension Board. The prize may be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Urban and Regional Planning Program Coordinator to the candidate for the degree of Master of Urban and Regional Planning (Housing Studies) who is the most proficient in the stream, provided that the candidates work is of sufficient merit. The prize may be held once only. P0736 New South Wales Department of Planning Prize 1 Established in 1959 as the Cumberland County Council Annual Prize, to recognise the close association of the Council and the Department of Town and Country Planning. Awarded by the NSW Department of Planning on the recommendation of the Coordinator of the Urban and Regional Planning Program to the best student graduating from the Master of Urban and Regional Planning provided the students work is of sufficient merit. P0753 John Odongo Prize in Economic and Community Development 1 Established in 1983 by donations from friends and colleagues of Dr John Odongo who died in 1982. Dr Odongo graduated with the degree Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney in 1979. The prize may be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Urban and Regional Planning Program Coordinator to the Urban and Regional Planning student who is most proficient in the unit of study Economic and Community Development, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P0768 Philips Lighting Prize 2 Awarded biennially on the recommendation of the Illumination Design Program Coordinator, for student work completed in even numbered years, to the candidate enrolled in the Illumination Design program who has completed at least 18 credit points and who demonstrates the greatest proficiency, provided that the candidates work is of sufficient merit. Up to two prizes may be awarded. The prize may be held once only. P0769 Philips Prize for Illumination Design 2 Awarded biennially on the recommendation of the Illumination Design Program Coordinator, for student work completed in odd numbered years, to the candidate enrolled in the Illumination Design program who has completed at least 18 credit points and who demonstrates the greatest proficiency, provided that the candidates work is of sufficient merit. The prize is paid from the income of a trust fund of $4000 administered by the trustees of her estate. Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Architecture Head of Discipline and the Master of Architecture Program Coordinator, to a candidate for the degree of Master of Architecture who on graduation demonstrates general meritorious work during the whole degree, provided that the candidates work is of sufficient merit. P0826 Planning Institute of Australia (New South Wales Division) Prize 1 Established in 1950 as the Town and Country Planning Institute Prize and re-established in 1979 by the Royal Australian Planning Institute New South Wales Division, after it was briefly replaced by a donation towards the purchase of books for the library of the Department of Town and Country Planning from 1975 to 1978. Awarded annually by the Planning Institute of Australia, New South Wales Division, on the recommendation of the Urban and Regional Planning Program Coordinator, to the outstanding graduate from the degree of Master of Urban and Regional Planning, provided the candidates work is of sufficient merit. P0837 Marjory and Lloyd Rees Prize for Urban Design 1 The prize was established in 1988 by a gift of $15,000 by Dr Lloyd Rees. Dr Lloyd Rees was associated with the Faculty of Architecture from 1947 - 1986 as a teacher and for a brief period in the 1960s as interim Dean of the Faculty. The prize may be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Urban Design Program Coordinator, to the student who has the best record in the studio component of the urban design course and who is eligible to graduate either with the degree of Master of Urban Design or with the Graduate Diploma in Urban Design, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P0888 Sir John Sulman Prize in Architectural Design 1 Founded in 1929 by a gift of 200 pounds from Sir John Sulman, Lecturer in Architecture for twenty-five years (1887-1912), for the study of the rational design of modern structures. Initially a book prize and later a certificate and cash prize from a capital preserved trust. The prize is awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Professor of Architecture and the Master of Architecture Program coordinator, to the student graduating Master of Architecture who has the best record in architectural design. May not be awarded concurrently with any other prize in architectural design. P0926 CHL Turner Memorial Prize in Architectural Design 1 Established in 1963 by a gift of 200 pounds from Mr and Mrs A.H. Turner of Vaucluse, in memory of their son, Christopher Hugh Lempriere Turner. The prize, originally consisted of books but is now funded by the proceeds from a capital preserved trust, is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Professor of Architecture and the Bachelor of Architecture Program Coordinator to a graduand from the degree of Bachelor of Architecture who exhibits excellence in architectural design throughout the course. May not be awarded concurrently with any other awards for architectural design. P1037 Design Computing Prize (Undergraduate) 3 Established in 2002 by funds from the Design Computing and Cognition discipline in the Faculty of Architecture. Awarded annually to the student(s) with the best overall weighted average mark completing the first, second, and final years of the Bachelor of Design Computing, provided the students work is of sufficient merit. P1070 Faculty of Architecture Alumni Prize 1 Initiated in 2000 by a donation of $3400 from the Faculty of Architecture Alumni Association and established in 2005. The fund continues to receive donations from Alumni. The Alumni prize recognises meritorious academic ability combined with leadership and service, showing potential for leadership and service in one of the fields of undergraduate course offerings of the Faculty. Awarded on the recommendation of the President of the Alumni Association on the recommendations from the Program Coordinators of undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Architecture. In the event that there is more than one winner, the prize money will be shared. P1071 Henry J Cowan Prize in Environment, Behaviour and Society 1 Established in 2005 by an annual gift from Professor Henry J Cowan, Foundation Professor of Architectural Science, of new books from his professional library to recognise students who achieve outstanding results in Environment, Behaviour and Society subjects in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Professor of Environment-Behaviour Studies or Discipline Head to the student with the best record in at least two undergraduate units of study related to Environment, Behaviour and Society, in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture degrees, provided that the work is of sufficient merit, and that the units counted have been completed within the previous two years. P1072 Henry J Cowan Prize in Architectural Science (Undergraduate Architecture) 2 Initiated in the late 1950s and established in 2005 by an annual gift by Professor Henry J Cowan, Foundation Professor of Architectural Science, of new books from his professional library to recognise students who achieve outstanding results in architectural science subjects in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. To accommodate changes in the Architecture program, namely the conversion of the Bachelor of Architecture into the Master of Architecture in 2008, the Henry J Cowan Prize in Architectural Science was divided into the Henry J Cowan Prize in Architectural Science (Undergraduate Architecture) and the Henry J Cowan in Architectural Science (Graduate Architecture), respectively. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the respective Program Coordinators to a student in each year of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture with the best record in at least two units of study related to Architectural Science and/or Appropriate Sustainable Technologies provided that the units counted have been completed within the previous two years and that the students work is of sufficient merit. The prize celebrates the work of Daniel Burnham, who prepared the first comprehensive plan for the controlled growth of an American city, Chicago. It is intended to encourage architecture students to use their ambition, skills and experience to improve the quality of life in the cities in which we live. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture Coordinator, to the student graduating Bachelor of Design in Architecture with the best record in the units of study in the urban design and planning subject area, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P1136 Norman Townsend Prize in Urban and Regional Development 1 Established in 2005 from the estate of the late Norman Townsend with the intention of providing prize money annually for the best essay in Urban and Regional Planning. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Urban and Regional Planning Program Coordinator to the Master of Urban and Regional Planning student who completes the most outstanding Planning Report, provided that the candidates work is of sufficient merit. P1137 Design Computing Prize (Graduate) 2 Initiated in 2002 and established in 2005 by an annual donation from the Design Computing and Cognition Discipline of the Faculty of Architecture. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Discipline Head to the two best students in the Design Computing Graduate Diploma or Masters program, provided they have completed at least 24 credit points, have not qualified to graduate and are of sufficient merit. P1138 Architectural Science Prize (Graduate) 5 Initiated in 2002 and established in 2005 by an annual donation from the Architectural Science Discipline of the Faculty of Architecture. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Discipline Head to an outstanding student in each of the programs Audio Design, Building, Building Services, Illumination Design and Sustainable Design. The award is based on weighted average mark, provided they have completed at least 24 credit points, have not qualified to graduate, are not receiving a scholarship or prize of higher value, and are of sufficient merit. Value, $100 (x5). P1139 Henry J Cowan Prize in Architectural History Theory and Criticism 1 Initiated in 2003 and established in 2005 by an annual donation of books from the professorial library of Emeritus Professor Henry J. Cowan, Foundation Professor of Architectural Science and long standing member of staff of the Faculty of Architecture. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Program Coordinator to the Master of Architecture (Architectural History, Theory and Criticism) graduand with the highest overall weighted average mark, provided the work is of sufficient merit. P1141 Pierlite Prize in Illumination Design 1 Initiated through the good offices of Associate Professor Warren Julian and established in 2005 by an annual donation from the Lighting Society. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Illumination Design Program Coordinator to the student or students with the most improved record in core subjects of the Illumination Design Program. The prize may be jointly awarded to up to three people. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the relevant Program Coordinator to the best student graduating from each of the programs: Master of Design Science (Audio and Acoustics), Master of Design Science (Building Services), Master of Design Science (Illumination Design), Master of Design Science (Sustainable Design), Master of Facilities Management, and the Master of Heritage Conservation provided they are of sufficient merit. P1144 Digital Media Prize 2 Initiated in 2002 and established in 2005 by an annual donation from the Design Computing and Cognition Discipline of the Faculty of Architecture. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Discipline Head to the two best students in the Digital Media Graduate Diploma or Masters program, provided they have completed at least 24 credit points, have not qualified to graduate and are of sufficient merit. P1145 Architectural Science Prize (Undergraduate Architecture) 3 Originally established in 1984 by the former Department of Architectural and Design Science to recognise students who achieve outstanding results in architectural science and technology subjects in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. To accommodate changes in the Architectural program, namely the conversion of the Bachelor of Architecture into the Master of Architecture in 2008, the Architectural Science Prize (undergraduate) was divided into the Architectural Science Prize (Undergraduate Architecture) allocated 3 prizes, and the Architectural Science Prize (Graduate Architecture) allocated 2 prizes, respectively. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Program Coordinators of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture to a student in each year of the degree who achieves outstanding results in at least two undergraduate units of study related to architectural science and technology and/or appropriate sustainable design provided that the students work is of sufficient merit, and that the units counted have been completed within the previous 2 years. P1150 David Rowe Memorial Prize in Building Services 1 Established in 2004 with the generous donations of $10,000 from each of his wife Mrs Joan Rowe and daughter Mrs Ann OBrien and contributions from other family and friends, in memory of Honorary Senior Lecturer David Rowe, long serving and respected member of the Faculty of Architecture. Awarded annually to the Master of Design Science (Building Services) student with the best average mark in at least 48 credit points. The prize may be held only once. P1151 Bluescope Lysaght Prize in Architectural Design 1 Established in 2001 by a donation of $15,000 from BHP Building Products, now Bluescope Steel, to promote the Lysaght brand in architectural design. The prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Architectural Design Program Coordinator to the Master of Architecture (Architectural Design) graduand with the best overall record in architectural design subjects. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the principal lecturer in Environmental Planning to the Graduate Diploma or Master of Urban and Regional Planning student with the best result in the unit of study Foundations of Environmental Planning or its successor unit of study. P1154 Vernon Memorial Prize in Urban and Regional Planning 1 Founded in 1915 by a gift of approximately 810 pounds from subscribers to a memorial of the late Colonel Walter Liberty Vernon, who was the Government Architect for twenty-one years, and who designed the original Fisher Library and other buildings at the University. Originally used to fund a lectureship in Town Planning, the fund now supports this prize for an outstanding student enrolled in either the Graduate Diploma or Master of Urban and Regional Planning who has completed at least 48 credit points. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Urban and Regional Planning Coordinator provided there is a candidate of sufficient merit. P1156 Bates Smart Prize for Architectural Design 1 Established in 2006 with a three year commitment of an annual donation of $2,500 by Bates Smart Pty Ltd to promote excellence in architectural design. The prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of a committee of up to two representatives from the Faculty of Architecture with expertise in architectural design and up to two representatives from Bates Smart. The award is made to a full time student who has completed two or three semesters of the Bachelor of Architecture, on the basis of academic merit in the core architectural design studios, submission of a portfolio and interview. The winner must enrol to complete the degree in the following year. The prize may be shared. P1226 Mirvac Prize 1 The prize was established in 1987, from a donation by Mirvac Ltd. The objective of the prize is to promote advanced study and research in urban design. The prize shall be awarded to a candidate for the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master of Urban and Regional Planning with the best result in the unit of study Urban Design and Development Control, provided that there is a candidate of sufficient merit. P1280 Mary-Lynne Taylor Prize in Planning Law 2 Established in 1985 by an offer of an annual donation by Phillips Fox solicitors to encourage studies in the field of Environmental Law. Re-initiated in 2000 by Adjunct Professor Mary-Lynne Taylor, then of Taylor Kelso Lawyers and awarded as the Taylor Kelso Prize in Planning Law. Formally established in 2005 as the Norman Waterhouse Prize in Planning Law and renamed the Mary-Lynne Taylor Prize in 2007. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the principal lecturer of Planning Law, to the Urban and Regional Planning student with the best result in the unit of study, Planning Law, provided the students work is of sufficient merit. Note: The prize has always been funded by Mary-Lynne Taylor but named after the firm she works for. She has since decided to name it after the true source of funds. To accommodate changes in the Architecture program, namely the conversion of the Bachelor of Architecture into the Master of Architecture in 2008, the Henry J Cowan Prize in Architectural Science was divided into the Henry J Cowan Prize in Architectural Science (Undergraduate Architecture) and the Henry J Cowan in Architectural Science (Graduate Architecture), respectively. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the respective Program Coordinators to a student in each year of the Master of Architecture with the best record in at least two units of study related to Architectural Science and/or Appropriate Sustainable Technologies provided that the units counted have been completed within the previous two years and that the students work is of sufficient merit. P1316 Architectural Science Prize (Graduate Architecture) 2 Originally established in 1984 by the former Department of Architectural and Design Science to recognise students who achieve outstanding results in architectural science and technology subjects in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. To accommodate changes in the Architectural program, namely the conversion of the Bachelor of Architecture into the Master of Architecture in 2008, the Architectural Science Prize (undergraduate) was divided into the Architectural Science Prize (Undergraduate Architecture) allocated 3 prizes, and the Architectural Science Prize (Graduate Architecture) allocated 2 prizes, respectively. P1327 James Hartley Bibby Memorial Prize in Architectural Design 1 Established in 1961 by the offer of an annual donation of 150 pounds from L.H. Bibby in memory of his son, James Hartley Bibby, BArch. (1958), who died in tragic circumstances in 1960. On Mr Bibbys death in 1967, the scholarship was endowed by the bequest to the University of the residuary of his estate. The prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the coordinator of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture to the student entering the Master of Architecture who has graduated Bachelor of Design in Architecture at the University of Sydney and who had the best record in architectural design for the degree, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P1328 Elizabeth Munro Prize in Architecture 1 Established in 1962 by a bequest of 3000 pounds from the late Mrs Sybil Enid Vera Munro Greeenwell in memory of her aunt, Elizabeth Munro. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Program Coordinator of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture to the student graduating with the highest weighted average mark Bachelor of Design in Architecture, provided that the students work is of sufficient merit. P1378 Urbis Heritage Award 1 Initiated by the Adjunct Professor Mary Lynne Taylor and formally established in 2009 by annual donation from Urbis Pty Ltd. Awarded on the recommendation of the principal lecturer of Planning Law to the student with the best result in the Heritage Assessment component of the unit of study Planning Law, provided the students work is of sufficient merit. An additional subsequent donation of $12,500 was provided by John Toon in 2013. The Martin Payne prize will be awarded at the Faculty awards ceremony to the student who performs best in the subject on land use and infrastructure planning, enrolled in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning or the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning. S0755 Denis Winston Memorial Scholarship in Urban and Regional Planning 2 In 1986 the Planning Research Centre established the Denis Winston Memorial Scholarship in memory of the late Emeritus Professor Denis Winston, inaugural Professor of Town and Country Planning in the Faculty of Architecture from 1948 to 1974, and founder of the Planning Research Centre in 1964, from monies contributed to the Denis Winston Memorial Fund. The object of the scholarship shall be to further studies in the field of urban and regional planning in recognition of the contribution to the field made by the late Emeritus Professor. The scholarship shall be awarded annually on the recommendation of the selection committee to a student entering full time or part time to the Master of Urban and Regional Planning who demonstrates the greatest academic potential, provided that they are of sufficient merit. The selection committee shall consist of the Urban and Regional Planning Program Coordinator, Director of the Planning Research Centre and the Urban and Regional Planning and Policy Discipline Head. Where the same person occupies two or more of these positions, other senior academic staff from the Urban and regional Planning and Policy Discipline should be invited to make a committee of three.
