The theme of the international cartoons contest is "our land makes our climate". It aims at
illustrating the role and contribution of land and soil in the functioning of the global ecosystem,

lifestyles and wellbeing of human population.
Land has poorly been considered at the beginning of the climate change negotiations whereas it is
part of the solution via its unique carbon storage capacity. A new focus on soils is emerging as land is
coveted trough large scale grabbing, and that the water contained in the soils is exposed to
unsustainable use and exploitation; in addition inappropriate farming and urban practices are limiting
the potential for the land to contribute to life and biodiversity while generating local and large scale
ecological instability and social insecurity. While known solutions do exist.
