101ST INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: BRENDA, A UGANDAN LESBIAN IN DANGER, OUGHT TO REMAIN IN FRANCE Rivière-Pilote, Wednesday 9 March 2011 Release No. TRF2011-07M FR _ TOTAL RESPECT TJENBÉ RÈD FÉDÉRATION The 101st International Women’s Day was celebrated yesterday. In a press release of 7 March, ACT-UP PARIS announced that Brenda, an activist of SMUG (Sexual Minorities Uganda), had to flee Uganda, arriving in France on 18 February asking for asylum. Being a member of a sexual minority in Uganda means exposing yourself to all forms of discrimination, violence and arrest. Brenda’s photo, with “Lesbian” stamped across it, was the front page of a tabloid called “Red Pepper” in October. A while afterwards, she was present at the funeral of David Kato, a gay activist for SMUG who had been in the news. Videos of this were circulated. She was able to flee to France, but has a visa for a month and can be summoned by the French authorities for return to Uganda. TOTAL RESPECT - TJENBÉ RÈD FÉDÉRATION (the Afro-Caribbean federation for the struggle against all forms of racism, homophobia and Aids) joins with ACT UP-PARIS in demanding that France grants the right of asylum to Brenda; that Alain Juppé, the Minister for External Affairs oppose the genocide of LGBT people (lesbian, gay, bi- and trans-sexual) in Uganda; that the French government, in its leading role in the UN, demand that an international resolution be taken against all homophobic member States. In order to support Brenda, a fund-raising evening is being organised by ACT UP-PARIS and the UNITY BAR. Meet on Thursday 11 March from 19:00hrs at 176 Rue Saint-Martin, Paris 3rd arrondissement, +33 1 42 72 70 59, Métro station - Rambuteau. NB: Brenda should not be confused with her compatriot Brenda Namigadde who is going through the same experience in the United Kingdom (cf. our demonstration on the 1st of March).
